    The article of record as published may be located at https://doi.org/10.1021/acs.jpca.7b02075The tetrameric Al(I) cyclopentadienyl compound Al4Cp*4 (Cp* = C5Me5) is a prototypical low-valence Al compound, with delocalized bonding between four Al(I) atoms and η5 ligands bound to the cluster exterior. The synthesis of new [AlR]4 (R = C5Me4Pr, C5Me4iPr) tetramers is presented. Though these systems failed to crystallize, comparison of variable-temperature 27Al NMR data with density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that these are Al4R4 tetramers analogous to Al4Cp*4 but with increased ligand steric bulk. NMR, DFT, and Atoms in Molecules analyses show that these clusters are enthalpically more stable as tetramers than the Cp* variant, due in part to noncovalent interactions across the bulkier ligand groups. Thermochemistry calculations for the low-valence metal interactions were found to be extremely sensitive to the DFT methodology used; the M06-2X functional with a cc-pVTZ basis set is shown to provide very accurate values for the enthalpy of tetramerization and 27Al NMR shifts. This computational method is then used to predict geometrical structures, noncovalent ligand interactions, and monomer/tetramer equilibrium in solution for a series of Al(I) cyclopentadienyl compounds of varying steric bulk

    Size Gap for Zero Temperature Black Holes in Semiclassical Gravity

    We show that a gap exists in the allowed sizes of all zero temperature static spherically symmetric black holes in semiclassical gravity when only conformally invariant fields are present. The result holds for both charged and uncharged black holes. By size we mean the proper area of the event horizon. The range of sizes that do not occur depends on the numbers and types of quantized fields that are present. We also derive some general properties that both zero and nonzero temperature black holes have in all classical and semiclassical metric theories of gravity.Comment: 4 pages, ReVTeX, no figure

    Education and articulation: Laclau and Mouffe’s radical democracy in school

    This paper outlines a theory of radical democratic education by addressing a key concept in Laclau and Mouffe’s Hegemony and Socialist Strategy: articulation. Through their concept of articulation, Laclau and Mouffe attempt to liberate Gramsci’s theory of hegemony from Marxist economism, and adapt it to a political sphere inhabited by a plurality of struggles and agents none of which is predominant. However, while for Gramsci the political process of hegemony formation has an explicit educational dimension, Laclau and Mouffe ignore this dimension altogether. My discussion starts with elaborating the concept of articulation and analysing it in terms of three dimensions: performance, connection and transformation. I then address the role of education in Gramsci’s politics, in which the figure of the intellectual is central, and argue that radical democratic education requires renouncing that figure. In the final section, I offer a theory of such education, in which both teacher and students articulate their political differences and identities

These black hole solutions are static, and they have a regular event horizon. However, they possess only axial symmetry.     Late-time evolution of the Yang-Mills field in the spherically symmetric gravitational collapse

    We investigate the late-time evolution of the Yang-Mills field in the self-gravitating backgrounds: Schwarzschild and Reissner-Nordstr\"om spacetimes. The late-time power-law tails develop in the three asymptotic regions: the future timelike infinity, the future null infinity and the black hole horizon. In these two backgrounds, however, the late-time evolution has quantitative and qualitative differences. In the Schwarzschild black hole background, the late-time tails of the Yang-Mills field are the same as those of the neutral massless scalar field with multipole moment l=1. The late-time evolution is dominated by the spacetime curvature. When the background is the Reissner-Nordstr\"om black hole, the late-time tails have not only a smaller power-law exponent, but also an oscillatory factor. The late-time evolution is dominated by the self-interacting term of the Yang-Mills field. The cause responsible for the differences is revealed.Comment: Revtex, 14 pages, no figure

    Health Insurance and Cardiac Transplantation A Call for Reform

    Cardiac transplantation is an accepted therapy for patients with end-stage heart failure (ESHF). Presently in the U.S., patients with ESHF need to have health insurance or another funding source to be considered eligible for cardiac transplantation. Whether it is appropriate to exclude potential recipients solely due to lack of finances has received considerable interest including being the subject of a recent major motion picture (John Q, New Line Cinema, 2002). However, one important aspect of this debate has been underappreciated and insufficiently addressed. Specifically, organ donation does not require the donor to have health insurance. Thus, individuals donate their hearts although they themselves would not have been eligible to receive a transplant had they needed one. By querying Siminoff’s National Study of Family Consent to Organ Donation database, we find that this situation is not uncommon as ∌23% of organ donors are uninsured. Herein we also discuss how the funding requirement for cardiac transplantation has been addressed by the federal government in the past, its implications on the organ donor consent process, and its potential impact on organ donation rates. We call for a government-sponsored, multidisciplinary task force to address this situation in hopes of remedying the inequities in the present system of organ allocation
