An Integrated Circuit for Signal Processing of the AMS RICH Photmultipliers Tubes
An analog integrated circuit has been designed, in a BiCMOS 0.8 micron
technology, for the feasability study of the signal processing of the AMS RICH
photomultiplier tubes. This low power, three channel gated integrator includes
its own gate and no external analog delay is requiered. It processes PMT pulses
over a dynamic range of more than 100. A logic output that indicates whether
the analog charge has to be considered is provided. This gated integrator is
used with a compact DSP based acquisition system in a 132 channels RICH
prototype. The charge calibration of each channel is carried out using a LED.
The pedestal measurement is performed on activation of a dedicated input. The
noise contribution study of the input RC network and amplifiers is presented.Comment: IEEE symp. on Nucl. Sci. and Med. Imaging, Toront
Muon Colliders
Muon Colliders have unique technical and physics advantages and disadvantages
when compared with both hadron and electron machines. They should thus be
regarded as complementary. Parameters are given of 4 TeV and 0.5 TeV high
luminosity \mumu colliders, and of a 0.5 TeV lower luminosity demonstration
machine. We discuss the various systems in such muon colliders, starting from
the proton accelerator needed to generate the muons and proceeding through muon
cooling, acceleration and storage in a collider ring. Problems of detector

Status of Muon Collider Research and Development and Future Plans
The status of the research on muon colliders is discussed and plans are
outlined for future theoretical and experimental studies. Besides continued
work on the parameters of a 3-4 and 0.5 TeV center-of-mass (CoM) energy
collider, many studies are now concentrating on a machine near 0.1 TeV (CoM)
that could be a factory for the s-channel production of Higgs particles. We
discuss the research on the various components in such muon colliders, starting
from the proton accelerator needed to generate pions from a heavy-Z target and
proceeding through the phase rotation and decay ()
channel, muon cooling, acceleration, storage in a collider ring and the
collider detector. We also present theoretical and experimental R & D plans for
the next several years that should lead to a better understanding of the design
and feasibility issues for all of the components. This report is an update of
the progress on the R & D since the Feasibility Study of Muon Colliders

MICE: The muon ionization cooling experiment. Step I: First measurement of emittance with particle physics detectors
Copyright @ 2011 APSThe Muon Ionization Cooling Experiment (MICE) is a strategic R&D project intended to demonstrate the only practical solution to providing high brilliance beams necessary for a neutrino factory or muon collider. MICE is under development at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL) in the United Kingdom. It comprises a dedicated beamline to generate a range of input muon emittances and momenta, with time-of-flight and Cherenkov detectors to ensure a pure muon beam. The emittance of the incoming beam will be measured in the upstream magnetic spectrometer with a scintillating fiber tracker. A cooling cell will then follow, alternating energy loss in Liquid Hydrogen (LH2) absorbers to RF cavity acceleration. A second spectrometer, identical to the first, and a second muon identification system will measure the outgoing emittance. In the 2010 run at RAL the muon beamline and most detectors were fully commissioned and a first measurement of the emittance of the muon beam with particle physics (time-of-flight) detectors was performed. The analysis of these data was recently completed and is discussed in this paper. Future steps for MICE, where beam emittance and emittance reduction (cooling) are to be measured with greater accuracy, are also presented.This work was supported by NSF grant PHY-0842798
Reversing the Extraverted Leadership Advantage: The Role of Employee Proactivity
Extraversion predicts leadership emergence and effectiveness, but do groups perform more effectively under extraverted leadership? Drawing on dominance complementarity theory, we propose that although extraverted leadership enhances group performance when employees are passive, this effect reverses when employees are proactive, because extraverted leaders are less receptive to proactivity. In Study 1, pizza stores with leaders rated high (low) in extraversion achieved higher profits when employees were passive (proactive). Study 2 constructively replicates these findings in the laboratory: passive (proactive) groups achieved higher performance when leaders acted high (low) in extraversion. We discuss theoretical and practical implications for leadership and proactivity
Anticipatory and post hoc cushioning strategies: Optimism and defensive pessimism in “risky” situations
The concept of cognitive strategies is proposed as a model for the process by which individuals cushion themselves against threats to self-esteem in “risky” situations. Two strategies are discussed. The first is defensive pessimism, an anticipatory strategy that involves setting defensively low expectations prior to entering a situation, so as to defend against loss of self-esteem in the event of failure. The second is an optimistic strategy, where expectations are high at the outset, and post hoc restructuring of the situation is done when the outcome is known. Expectations about performance on an anagram task were collected from prescreened optimistics and defensive pessimists. After completion of the task, subjects were given false failure or success feedback. A posttest measuring self-reported satisfaction, feelings of control, and performance evaluations was administered. As predicted, subjects selected for defensive pessimist attitudes expected to perform significantly worse than did those selected for optimistic attitudes, even though there was no difference in actual performance. Moreover, optimists demonstrated attributional egotism in claiming significantly more control over their performance in the success condition than in the failure condition. Pessimists did not show this pattern. The data provide evidence of post hoc cushioning efforts among optimists, whereas defensive pessimists seem to be cushioned by their initial structuring of the situation. Validating the model of predictors of academic self-handicapping behavior
The main aim of the present study is to validate the model of predictors of self-handicapping behavior (POASH) on the data derived from undergraduate students in an ongoing co-curriculum compulsory course. The study adapted and extended the original theory of reciprocal interaction of emotion, cognition and behavior by adding self-handicapping behavior component. In so doing, this study assessed the direct and indirect effects of emotion, cognition and behavior via student engagement on self-handicapping behavior. The second purpose of the study is to evaluate gender and nationality status invariants of the causal structure of POASH. This cross-validation procedure determined whether gender and nationality status moderated the causal structure of the model, and thus the generality of POASH. The data was collected from two self-reported questionnaires administered to 790 undergraduates of an International Islamic University in Malaysia. A confirmatory three-step approach theory testing and development using Maximum Likelihood method was applied. The results of structured equation modeling supported the adequacy of POASH and the causal structure of POASH proved to be applicable to both genders and nationality statuses
