    Work toward developing a diffraction limited, single frequency, modulated transmitter suitable for coherent optical communication or direct detection communication is discussed. Diode pumped, monolithic Nd:YAG nonplanar ring oscillators were used as the carrier beam. An external modulation technique which can handle high optical powers, has moderate modulation voltage, and which can reach modulation rates of 1 GHz was invented. Semiconductor laser pumped solid-state lasers which have high output power (0.5 Watt) and which oscillate at a single frequency, in a diffraction limited beam, at the wavelength of 1.06 microns were built. A technique for phase modulating the laser output by 180 degrees with a 40-volt peak to peak driving voltage is demonstrated. This technique can be adapted for amplitude modulation of 100 percent with the same voltage. This technique makes use of a resonant bulk modulator, so it does not have the power handling limitations of guided wave modulators

    A preliminary summary of the observations of the 16 February 1984 solar flare (STIP Interval XV, 12-21 February 1984)

    The solar flare on 16 Feb. 1984 (0900 UT) and the associated photon and particle emissions were perhaps the most interesting solar and interplanetary phenomena during STIP Interval XV, 12 to 21 Feb. 1984. The X-ray and microwave radio emissions, as observed from the Earth, were relatively weak and no optical flare was reported. However, the hard X-ray and low energy gamma-ray observations made with the Pioneer Venus Orbiter spacecraft behind the west limb of the Sun indicate that the flare was, in reality, very intense. There is evidence that the flare was located approx 40 deg behind the west limb of the Sun and hence, for instruments located near the Earth, the most intense parts of the X-ray and microwave radio sources were occulted by the photosphere. However, the effect of occultation on the metric type II, type III, and type IV and decimetric (type DCIM) radio sources appeared to be relatively small. Following the flare, a large increase in the counting rates was recorded by several ground level neutron monitors and energetic particle detectors located in interplanetary space.     We report on quantum interference between a pair of counterpropagating quantum Hall edge states that are separated by a high quality tunnel barrier. Observed Aharonov-Bohm oscillations are analyzed in terms of resonant tunneling between coupled Luttinger liquids that creates bound electronic states between pairs of tunnel centers that act like interference slits. We place a lower bound in the range of 20-40 μ\mum for the phase coherence length and directly confirm the extended phase coherence of quantum Hall edge states.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, 1 tabl

    Very Low Mass Stellar and Substellar Companions to Solar-like Stars from MARVELS. II. A Short-period Companion Orbiting an F Star with Evidence of a Stellar Tertiary and Significant Mutual Inclination

    We report the discovery via radial velocity (RV) measurements of a short-period (P = 2.430420 ± 0.000006 days) companion to the F-type main-sequence star TYC 2930-00872-1. A long-term trend in the RV data also suggests the presence of a tertiary stellar companion with P > 2000 days. High-resolution spectroscopy of the host star yields T_(eff) = 6427 ± 33 K, log g = 4.52 ± 0.14, and [Fe/H] = –0.04 ± 0.05. These parameters, combined with the broadband spectral energy distribution (SED) and a parallax, allow us to infer a mass and radius of the host star of M_1 = 1.21 ± 0.08 M_☉ and R_1 = 1.09^(+0.15)_(–0.13) R_☉. The minimum mass of the inner companion is below the hydrogen-burning limit; however, the true mass is likely to be substantially higher. We are able to exclude transits of the inner companion with high confidence. Further, the host star spectrum exhibits a clear signature of Ca H and K core emission, indicating stellar activity, but a lack of photometric variability and small v sin I suggest that the primary's spin axis is oriented in a pole-on configuration. The rotational period of the primary estimated through an activity-rotation relation matches the orbital period of the inner companion to within 1.5 σ, suggesting that the primary and inner companion are tidally locked. If the inner companion's orbital angular momentum vector is aligned with the stellar spin axis as expected through tidal evolution, then it has a stellar mass of ~0.3-0.4 M_☉. Direct imaging limits the existence of stellar companions to projected separations <30 AU. No set of spectral lines and no significant flux contribution to the SED from either companion are detected, which places individual upper mass limits of M_([2,3]) ≾ 1.0 M_☉, provided they are not stellar remnants. If the tertiary is not a stellar remnant, then it likely has a mass of ~0.5-0.6 M_☉, and its orbit is likely significantly inclined from that of the secondary, suggesting that the Kozai-Lidov mechanism may have driven the dynamical evolution of this system

    Absence of Luttinger's Theorem due to Zeros in the Single-Particle Green Function

    We show exactly with an SU(N) interacting model that even if the ambiguity associated with the placement of the chemical potential, μ\mu, for a T=0 gapped system is removed by using the unique value μ(T→0)\mu(T\rightarrow 0), Luttinger's sum rule is violated even if the ground-state degeneracy is lifted by an infinitesimal hopping. The failure stems from the non-existence of the Luttinger-Ward functional for a system in which the self-energy diverges. Since it is the existence of the Luttinger-Ward functional that is the basis for Luttinger's theorem which relates the charge density to sign changes of the single-particle Green function, no such theorem exists. Experimental data on the cuprates are presented which show a systematic deviation from the Luttinger count, implying a breakdown of the electron quasiparticle picture in strongly correlated electron matter.Comment: Published version with supplemental material rebutting the recent criticism that our theorem fails if the ground-state degeneracy is lifte

    Cascade of Quantum Phase Transitions in Tunnel-Coupled Edge States

    We report on the cascade of quantum phase transitions exhibited by tunnel-coupled edge states across a quantum Hall line junction. We identify a series of quantum critical points between successive strong and weak tunneling regimes in the zero-bias conductance. Scaling analysis shows that the conductance near the critical magnetic fields BcB_{c} is a function of a single scaling argument ∣B−Bc∣T−κ|B-B_{c}|T^{-\kappa}, where the exponent κ=0.42\kappa = 0.42. This puzzling resemblance to a quantum Hall-insulator transition points to importance of interedge correlation between the coupled edge states.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
