The Early California Cultural Atlas
The Early California Cultural Atlas (ECCA) is envisioned as an interactive website that will integrate and manage historical resources, enable analysis of historical data related to the colonization and settlement of California, display research results in the form of maps and other visualizations, and educate students from elementary school to the university. This project is interdisciplinary and collaborative; it will draw upon the expertise of librarians, archivists, research scholars, software engineers, technical experts, California Indians, and primary school teachers. The ECCA represents a new partnership between existing programs, innovative scholars, and accomplished educators

Metastable lifetimes in a kinetic Ising model: Dependence on field and system size
The lifetimes of metastable states in kinetic Ising ferromagnets are studied
by droplet theory and Monte Carlo simulation, in order to determine their
dependences on applied field and system size. For a wide range of fields, the
dominant field dependence is universal for local dynamics and has the form of
an exponential in the inverse field, modified by universal and nonuniversal
power-law prefactors. Quantitative droplet-theory predictions are numerically
verified, and small deviations are shown to depend nonuniversally on the
details of the dynamics. We identify four distinct field intervals in which the
field dependence and statistical properties of the lifetimes are different. The
field marking the crossover between the weak-field regime, in which the decay
is dominated by a single droplet, and the intermediate-field regime, in which
it is dominated by a finite droplet density, vanishes logarithmically with
system size. As a consequence the slow decay characteristic of the former
regime may be observable in systems that are macroscopic as far as their

Growth of laser damage in fused silica: diameter to depth ratio
Growth of laser initiated damage plays a major role in determining optics lifetime in high power laser systems. Previous measurements have established that the lateral diameter grows exponentially. Knowledge of the growth of the site in the propagation direction is also important, especially so when considering techniques designed to mitigate damage growth, where it is required to reach all the subsurface damage. In this work, we present data on both the diameter and the depth of a growing exit surface damage sites in fused silica. Measured growth rates with both 351 nm illumination and with combined 351 nm and 1054 nm illumination are discussed
