    Funneling Light Through a Subwavelength Aperture with Epsilon-Near-Zero Materials

    Integration of the next generation of photonic structures with electronic and optical on-chip components requires the development of effective methods for confining and controlling light in subwavelength volumes. Several techniques enabling light coupling to sub-wavelength objects have recently been proposed, including grating-, and composite-based solutions. However, experi-mental realization of these couplers involves complex fabrication with \sim 10nm resolution in three dimensions. One promising alternative to complex coupling structures involves materials with vanishingly small dielectric permittivity, also known as epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) materials. In contrast to the previously referenced approaches, a single at layer of ENZ-material is expected to provide effcient coupling between free-space radiation and sub-wavelength guiding structures. Here we report the first direct observation of bulk-ENZ-enhanced transmission through a subwavelength slit, accompanied by a theoretical study of this phenomenon. Our study opens the door to multiple practical applications of ENZ materials and ENZ-based photonic systems

    Combining stable isotopes with contamination indicators: A method for improved investigation of nitrate sources and dynamics in aquifers with mixed nitrogen inputs.

    Excessive nitrate (NO3−) concentration in groundwater raises health and environmental issues that must be addressed by all European Union (EU) member states under the Nitrates Directive and the Water Framework Directive. The identification of NO3− sources is critical to efficiently control or reverse NO3− contamination that affects many aquifers. In that respect, the use of stable isotope ratios 15N/14N and 18O/16O in NO3− (expressed as ÎŽ15N-NO3− and ÎŽ18O-NO3−, respectively) has long shown its value. However, limitations exist in complex environments where multiple nitrogen (N) sources coexist. This two-year study explores a method for improved NO3− source investigation in a shallow unconfined aquifer with mixed N inputs and a long established NO3− problem. In this tillage-dominated area of free-draining soil and subsoil, suspected NO3− sources were diffuse applications of artificial fertiliser and organic point sources (septic tanks and farmyards). Bearing in mind that artificial diffuse sources were ubiquitous, groundwater samples were first classified according to a combination of two indicators relevant of point source contamination: presence/absence of organic point sources (i.e. septic tank and/or farmyard) near sampling wells and exceedance/non-exceedance of a contamination threshold value for sodium (Na+) in groundwater. This classification identified three contamination groups: agricultural diffuse source but no point source (D+P−), agricultural diffuse and point source (D+P+) and agricultural diffuse but point source occurrence ambiguous (D+P±). Thereafter ÎŽ15N-NO3− and ÎŽ18O-NO3− data were superimposed on the classification. As ÎŽ15N-NO3− was plotted against ÎŽ18O-NO3−, comparisons were made between the different contamination groups. Overall, both ÎŽ variables were significantly and positively correlated (p 0.6, 0.53 ≀ slope ≀ 0.76), i.e. where point source contamination was characterised or suspected. These lines originated from the 2–6‰ range for ÎŽ15N-NO3−, which suggests that i) NO3− contamination was dominated by an agricultural diffuse N source (most likely the large organic matter pool that has incorporated 15N-depleted nitrogen from artificial fertiliser in agricultural soils and whose nitrification is stimulated by ploughing and fertilisation) rather than point sources and ii) denitrification was possibly favoured by high dissolved organic content (DOC) from point sources. Combining contamination indicators and a large stable isotope dataset collected over a large study area could therefore improve our understanding of the NO3− contamination processes in groundwater for better land use management. We hypothesise that in future research, additional contamination indicators (e.g. pharmaceutical molecules) could also be combined to disentangle NO3− contamination from animal and human wastes

    Observations of the Askaryan Effect in Ice

    We report on the first observations of the Askaryan effect in ice: coherent impulsive radio Cherenkov radiation from the charge asymmetry in an electromagnetic (EM) shower. Such radiation has been observed in silica sand and rock salt, but this is the first direct observation from an EM shower in ice. These measurements are important since the majority of experiments to date that rely on the effect for ultra-high energy neutrino detection are being performed using ice as the target medium. As part of the complete validation process for the Antarctic Impulsive Transient Antenna (ANITA) experiment, we performed an experiment at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC) in June 2006 using a 7.5 metric ton ice target, yielding results fully consistent with theoretical expectations.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures, minor correction

    HVPE growth and characterization of GaP on different substrates and patterned templates for frequency conversion devices

    This article describes efforts to achieve fast deposition of thick Quasi-Phase-Matched (QPM) GaP structures with high surface and structural quality on oriented patterned (OP) templates in a Hydride Vapor Phase Epitaxial (HVPE) process. These QPM structures will be incorporated in devices for conversion of frequencies from the near infrared to the mid infrared and THz regions, where powerful and tunable sources are in great demand for both military and civilian applications. In contrast with GaAs—the most studied OP QPM material—the two-photon absorption of GaP is predicted to be extremely low, which allows pumping with a number of convenient sources between 1 – 1.7 ”m. Unpatterned GaP layers up to 370 ”m thick were grown with growth rates up to 93 ”m/hr with high reproducibility on bare substrates. The layers demonstrated smooth surface morphology with RMS < 1 nm and high structural quality with FWHM equal to 39 arcsec for layers grown on GaP and 112 arcsec for those grown on GaAs. Growth on OP-GaP templates resulted in 142 ”m thick QPM structures deposited at a growth rate of 71 ”m/h with good vertical (normal to the layer surface) propagation of the initial pattern. When the growth was performed on OP-GaAs one of the domains showed a trend toward a faceting growth. Further investigations are in progress to equalize the vertical and lateral growth of the two domains, and determine the best orientation of the substrate and pattern in order to achieve structures thick enough for high power nonlinear applications

    Pancreaticoduodenectomy for the treatment of pancreatic neoplasms in children: A Pediatric Surgical Oncology Research Collaborative study

    BackgroundTo better characterize short- term and long- term outcomes in children with pancreatic tumors treated with pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD).MethodsPatients 21 years of age or younger who underwent PD at Pediatric Surgical Oncology Collaborative (PSORC) hospitals between 1990 and 2017 were identified. Demographic, clinical information, and outcomes (operative complications, long- term pancreatic function, recurrence, and survival) were collected.ResultsSixty- five patients from 18 institutions with a median age of 13 years (4 months- 22 years) and a median (IQR) follow- up of 2.8 (4.3) years were analyzed. Solid pseudopapillary tumor of the pancreas (SPN) was the most common histology. Postoperative complications included pancreatic leak in 14% (n = 9), delayed gastric emptying in 9% (n = 6), marginal ulcer in one patient, and perioperative (30- day) death due to hepatic failure in one patient. Pancreatic insufficiency was observed in 32% (n = 21) of patients, with 23%, 3%, and 6% with exocrine, or endocrine insufficiencies, or both, respectively. Children with SPN and benign neoplasms all survived. Overall, there were 14 (22%) recurrences and 11 deaths (17%). Univariate analysis revealed non- SPN malignant tumor diagnosis, preoperative vascular involvement, intraoperative transfusion requirement, pathologic vascular invasion, positive margins, and need for neoadjuvant chemotherapy as risk factors for recurrence and poor survival. Multivariate analysis only revealed pathologic vascular invasion as a risk factor for recurrence and poor survival.ConclusionThis is the largest series of pediatric PD patients. PD is curative for SPN and benign neoplasms. Pancreatic insufficiency is the most common postoperative complication.     Cloud Computing As a Tool for Enhancing Ecological Goals?

    Cloud computing has been introduced as a promising information technology (IT) that embodies not only economic advantages in terms of increased efficiency but also ecological gains through saving energy. The latter has become particularly important in view of the rising energy costs of IT. The present study analyzes whether necessary preconditions for accepting cloud computing as a new infrastructure, such as awareness and perceived net value, exist on the part of the users. The analysis is based on a combined research framework of the theory of reasoned action (TRA) and the technology acceptance model (TAM) in a cloud computing setting. Two consumer surveys, the one to elicit beliefs and the second to gain insight into the ranking of the variables, are employed. This study uses structural equation modeling (SEM) to evaluate the hypotheses. The results indicate support for the proposed research framework. Surprisingly however, the ecological factor does not play a role in forming cloud computing intentions, regardless of prior knowledge or experience. Empirical evidence of this study suggests increasing efforts for informing actual and potential users, particularly in respect to possible ecological advantages through applying the new IT infrastructure
