Water ice in the Kuiper belt
We examine a large collection of low-resolution near-infrared spectra of Kuiper Belt objects (KBOs) and centaurs in an attempt to understand the presence of water ice in the Kuiper Belt. We find that water ice on the surface of these objects occurs in three separate manners: (1) Haumea family members uniquely show surfaces of nearly pure water ice, presumably a consequence of the fragmentation of the icy mantle of a larger differentiated proto-Haumea; (2) large objects with absolute magnitudes of H < 3 (and a limited number to H = 4.5) have surface coverings of water ice—perhaps mixed with ammonia—that appears to be related to possibly ancient cryovolcanism on these large objects; and (3) smaller KBOs and centaurs which are neither Haumea family members nor cold-classical KBOs appear to divide into two families (which we refer to as "neutral" and "red"), each of which is a mixture of a common nearly neutral component and either a slightly red or very red component that also includes water ice. A model suggesting that the difference between neutral and red objects due to formation in an early compact solar system either inside or outside, respectively, of the ~20 AU methanol evaporation line is supported by the observation that methanol is only detected on the reddest objects, which are those which would be expected to have the most of the methanol containing mixture

Thermal-structural combined loads design criteria study
A study was conducted to determine methodology for combining thermal structural loads and assessing the effects of the combined loads on the design of a thermal protection system and a hot structure of a high cross range delta wing space shuttle orbiter vehicle. The study presents guidelines for establishing a basis for predicting thermal and pressure environments and for determining limit and ultimate design loads on the vehicle during reentry. Limit trajectories were determined by using dispersions on a representative nominal mission and system parameters expected during the life of the vehicle. Nine chosen locations on the vehicle surface having TPS or hot structures were examined, and weight sensitivity analyses were performed for each location
H-NMR spin-echo measurements of the static and dynamic spin properties in -(BETS)FeCl
H-NMR spin-echo measurements of the spin-echo decay with a
decay rate 1/ and the frequency shift under applied
magnetic field = 9 T along the a-axis over a temperature
range 2.0180 K are reported for a single crystal of the organic conductor
-(BETS)FeCl. It provides the spin dynamic and static
properties in the paramagnetic metal (PM) and antiferromagnetic insulator (AFI)
states as well as across the PMAFI phase transition. A large slow beat
structure in the spin-echo decay is observed with a typical beat frequency of
7 kHz and it varies across the spectrum. Its origin is attributed to
the HH dipole interactions rather than to the much larger
dipolar field contribution from the Fe electrons (spin = 5/2). A
simple phenomenological model provides an excellent fit to the data. The
dominant H-NMR frequency shift comes from the dipolar field from the 3d
Fe ions, and the Fe Fe exchange interactions ()
( includes the dd exchange interactions through the electrons)
have a substantial effect to the local field at the proton sites expecially at
low temperatures. A good fit is obtained with = - 1.7 K. The data of
the spin-echo decay rate 1/ indicates that there is a significant change
in the slow fluctuations of the local magnetic field at the H-sites on
traversing the PM to AFI phase. This evidence supports earlier reports that the
PMAFI phase transition in -(BETS)FeCl is driven

Rocket studies of solar corona and transition region
The XSST (X-Ray Spectrometer/Spectrograph Telescope) rocket payload launched by a Nike Boosted Black Brant was designed to provide high spectral resolution coronal soft X-ray line information on a spectrographic plate, as well as time resolved photo-electric records of pre-selected lines and spectral regions. This spectral data is obtained from a 1 x 10 arc second solar region defined by the paraboloidal telescope of the XSST. The transition region camera provided full disc images in selected spectral intervals originating in lower temperature zones than the emitting regions accessible to the XSST. A H-alpha camera system allowed referencing the measurements to the chromospheric temperatures and altitudes. Payload flight and recovery information is provided along with X-ray photoelectric and UV flight data, transition camera results and a summary of the anomalies encountered. Instrument mechanical stability and spectrometer pointing direction are also examined
Universal measurement of quantum correlations of radiation
A measurement technique is proposed which, in principle, allows one to
observe the general space-time correlation properties of a quantized radiation
field. Our method, called balanced homodyne correlation measurement, unifies
the advantages of balanced homodyne detection with those of homodyne
