    Classicality of quantum information processing

    The ultimate goal of the classicality programme is to quantify the amount of quantumness of certain processes. Here, classicality is studied for a restricted type of process: quantum information processing (QIP). Under special conditions, one can force some qubits of a quantum computer into a classical state without affecting the outcome of the computation. The minimal set of conditions is described and its structure is studied. Some implications of this formalism are the increase of noise robustness, a proof of the quantumness of mixed state quantum computing and a step forward in understanding the very foundation of QIP.Comment: Minor changes, published in Phys.     P,T-Violating Nuclear Matrix Elements in the One-Meson Exchange Approximation

    Expressions for the P,T-violating NN potentials are derived for π\pi, ρ\rho and ω\omega exchange. The nuclear matrix elements for ρ\rho and ω\omega exchange are shown to be greatly suppressed, so that, under the assumption of comparable coupling constants, π\pi exchange would dominate by two orders of magnitude. The ratio of P,T-violating to P-violating matrix elements is found to remain approximately constant across the nuclear mass table, thus establishing the proportionality between time-reversal-violation and parity-violation matrix elements. The calculated values of this ratio suggest a need to obtain an accuracy of order 5×104 5 \times 10^{-4} for the ratio of the PT-violating to P-violating asymmetries in neutron transmission experiments in order to improve on the present limits on the isovector pion coupling constant.Comment: 17 pages, LaTeX, no figure

    Luminosity Functions of Elliptical Galaxies at z < 1.2

    The luminosity functions of E/S0 galaxies are constructed in 3 different redshift bins (0.2 < z < 0.55, 0.55 < z < 0.8, 0.8 < z < 1.2), using the data from the Hubble Space Telescope Medium Deep Survey (HST MDS) and other HST surveys. These independent luminosity functions show the brightening in the luminosity of E/S0s by about 0.5~1.0 magnitude at z~1, and no sign of significant number evolution. This is the first direct measurement of the luminosity evolution of E/S0 galaxies, and our results support the hypothesis of a high redshift of formation (z > 1) for elliptical galaxies, together with weak evolution of the major merger rate at z < 1.Comment: To be published in ApJ Letters, 4 pages, AAS Latex, 4 figures, and 2 table

    Is the electrostatic force between a point charge and a neutral metallic object always attractive?

    We give an example of a geometry in which the electrostatic force between a point charge and a neutral metallic object is repulsive. The example consists of a point charge centered above a thin metallic hemisphere, positioned concave up. We show that this geometry has a repulsive regime using both a simple analytical argument and an exact calculation for an analogous two-dimensional geometry. Analogues of this geometry-induced repulsion can appear in many other contexts, including Casimir systems.Comment: 7 pages, 7 figure

    The Chandra Deep Field North Survey. IX. Extended X-ray Sources

    The ~1 Ms Chandra Deep Field North observation is used to study the extended X-ray sources in the region surrounding the Hubble Deep Field North (HDF-N), yielding the most sensitive probe of extended X-ray emission at cosmological distances to date. A total of six such sources are detected, the majority of which align with small numbers of optically bright galaxies. Their angular sizes, band ratios, and X-ray luminosities -- assuming they lie at the same distances as the galaxies coincident with the X-ray emission -- are generally consistent with the properties found for nearby groups of galaxies. One source is notably different and is likely to be a poor-to-moderate X-ray cluster at high redshift (i.e., z > 0.7). We are also able to place strong constraints on the optically detected cluster of galaxies ClG 1236+6215 at z=0.85 and the wide-angle-tail radio galaxy VLA J123725.7+621128 at z~1-2. With rest-frame 0.5--2.0 keV X-ray luminosities of <(3-15)e42 ergs s^{-1}, the environments of both sources are either likely to have a significant deficit of hot intra-cluster gas compared to local clusters of galaxies, or they are X-ray groups. We find the surface density of extended X-ray sources in this observation to be 167 (+97,-67) deg^{-2} at a limiting soft-band flux of approximately 3e-16 ergs s^{-1} cm^{-2}. No evolution in the X-ray luminosity function of clusters is needed to explain this value.     X-ray Sources in the Hubble Deep Field Detected by Chandra

    We present first results from an X-ray study of the Hubble Deep Field North (HDF-N) and its environs obtained using 166 ks of data collected by the Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer (ACIS) on board the Chandra X-ray Observatory. This is the deepest X-ray observation ever reported, and in the HDF-N itself we detect six X-ray sources down to a 0.5--8 keV flux limit of 4E-16 erg cm^-2 s^-1. Comparing these sources with objects seen in multiwavelength HDF-N studies shows positional coincidences with the extremely red object NICMOS J123651.74 +621221.4, an active galactic nucleus (AGN), three elliptical galaxies, and one nearby spiral galaxy. The X-ray emission from the ellipticals is consistent with that expected from a hot interstellar medium, and the spiral galaxy emission may arise from a `super-Eddington' X-ray binary or ultraluminous supernova remnant. Four of the X-ray sources have been detected at radio wavelengths. We also place X-ray upper limits on AGN candidates found in the HDF-N, and we present the tightest constraints yet on X-ray emission from the SCUBA submillimeter source population. None of the 10 high-significance submillimeter sources reported in the HDF-N and its vicinity is detected with Chandra ACIS.     A Medium Survey of the Hard X-Ray Sky with ASCA. II.: The Source's Broad Band X-Ray Spectral Properties

    A complete sample of 60 serendipitous hard X-ray sources with flux in the range 1×1013\sim 1 \times 10^{-13} \ecs to 4×1012\sim 4 \times 10^{-12} \ecs (2 - 10 keV), detected in 87 ASCA GIS2 images, was recently presented in literature. Using this sample it was possible to extend the description of the 2-10 keV LogN(>S)-LogS down to a flux limit of 6×1014\sim 6\times 10^{-14} \ecs (the faintest detectable flux), resolving about a quarter of the Cosmic X-ray Background. In this paper we have combined the ASCA GIS2 and GIS3 data of these sources to investigate their X-ray spectral properties using the "hardness" ratios and the "stacked" spectra method.     Colliding axisymmetric pp-waves

They are impulsive in character and their coordinate singularities become point curvature singularities at the boundaries of the interaction region. The solution is conformally flat.     Method of lines solution to the transient SBS equations for nanosecond Stokes pulses

    The spectral and temporal evolution of distributed sensing based on stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) in optical fibers for severalnanosecondStokes pulses is demonstrated by using the method of lines (MOL) solution of the transient SBS equations. A superbee fluxlimiter is utilized to avoid numerical damping and dispersion that would otherwise be brought on by the approximation of spatial derivativesassociated with the partial differential equations (PDEs). In order to increase computational efficiency, an approach is adopted wherebythe sparse PDE Jacobian matrix integrator option of the ODE solver(s) is employed. Simulation examples of SBS-based sensing for fiberscontaining sections with different Brillouin frequencies are presented. To the best of our knowledge, this MOL solution is proposed for thefirst time for modeling of the transient SBS equations for nanosecond Stokes pulses with different waveforms in a SBS based fiber opticsensor
