Transverse Bragg-reflector injection lasers
A GaAs-GaAlAs injection laser has been tested that confines light in the lateral dimension (normal to junction plane) by a multilayer Bragg reflector. In the past, light has been confined as a result of the higher-index guiding region and resulting evanescent fields
Finite-size scaling theory for explosive percolation transitions
The finite-size scaling (FSS) theory for continuous phase transitions has
been useful in determining the critical behavior from the size dependent
behaviors of thermodynamic quantities. When the phase transition is
discontinuous, however, FSS approach has not been well established yet. Here,
we develop a FSS theory for the explosive percolation transition arising in the
Erd\H{o}s and R\'enyi model under the Achlioptas process. A scaling function is
derived based on the observed fact that the derivative of the curve of the
order parameter at the critical point diverges with system size in a
power-law manner, which is different from the conventional one based on the
divergence of the correlation length at . We show that the susceptibility
is also described in the same scaling form. Numerical simulation data for
different system sizes are well collapsed on the respective scaling functions.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure
Phenomenological Theory of Superconductivity and Magnetism in HoDyNiBC
The coexistence of the superconductivity and magnetism in the
HoDyNiBC is studied by using Ginzburg-Landau theory. This
alloy shows the coexistence and complex interplay of superconducting and
magnetic order. We propose a phenomenological model which includes two magnetic
and two superconducting order parameters accounting for the multi-band
structure of this material. We describe phenomenologically the magnetic
fluctuations and order and demonstrate that they lead to anomalous behavior of
the upper critical field. The doping dependence of in
HoDyNiBC showing a reentrance behavior are analyzed
yielding a very good agreement with experimental data.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, REVTeX, submitted to PR

Development Of Third Harmonic Generation As A Short Pulse Probe Of Shock Heated Material
We are studying high-pressure laser produced shock waves in silicon (100). To examine the material dynamics, we are performing pump-probe style experiments utilizing 600 ps and 40 fs laser pulses from a Ti:sapphire laser. Two-dimensional interferometry reveals information about the shock breakout, while third harmonic light generated at the rear surface is used to infer the crystalline state of the material as a function of time. Sustained third harmonic generation (THG) during a similar to 100 kbar shock breakout indicate that the rear surface remains crystalline for at least 3 ns. However, a decrease in THG during a similar to 300 kbar shock breakout suggests a different behavior, which could include a change in crystalline structure.Mechanical Engineerin
Color Reflection Invariance and Monopole Condensation in QCD
We review the quantum instability of the Savvidy-Nielsen-Olesen (SNO) vacuum
of the one-loop effective action of SU(2) QCD, and point out a critical defect
in the calculation of the functional determinant of the gluon loop in the SNO
effective action. We prove that the gauge invariance, in particular the color
reflection invariance, exclude the unstable tachyonic modes from the gluon loop
integral. This guarantees the stability of the magnetic condensation in QCD.Comment: 28 pages, 3 figures, JHEP styl
Electronic structure of YbB: Is it a Topological Insulator or not?
To resolve the controversial issue of the topological nature of the
electronic structure of YbB, we have made a combined study using density
functional theory (DFT) and angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES).
Accurate determination of the low energy band topology in DFT requires the use
of modified Becke-Johnson exchange potential incorporating the spin-orbit
coupling and the on-site Coulomb interaction of Yb electrons as large
as 7 eV. We have double-checked the DFT result with the more precise GW band
calculation. ARPES is done with the non-polar (110) surface termination to
avoid band bending and quantum well confinement that have confused ARPES
spectra taken on the polar (001) surface termination. Thereby we show
definitively that YbB has a topologically trivial B 2-Yb 5
semiconductor band gap, and hence is a non-Kondo non-topological insulator
(TI). In agreement with theory, ARPES shows pure divalency for Yb and a -
band gap of 0.3 eV, which clearly rules out both of the previous scenarios of
- band inversion Kondo TI and - band inversion non-Kondo TI. We
have also examined the pressure-dependent electronic structure of YbB,
and found that the high pressure phase is not a Kondo TI but a
\emph{p}-\emph{d} overlap semimetal.Comment: The main text is 6 pages with 4 figures, and the supplementary

Analytical treatment of SUSY Quasi-normal modes in a non-rotating Schwarzschild black hole
We use the Fock-Ivanenko formalism to obtain the Dirac equation which
describes the interaction of a massless 1/2-spin neutral fermion with a
gravitational field around a Schwarzschild black hole (BH). We obtain
approximated analytical solutions for the eigenvalues of the energy
(quasi-normal frequencies) and their corresponding eigenstates (quasi-normal
states). The interesting result is that all the excited states [and their
supersymmetric (SUSY) partners] have a purely imaginary frequency, which can be
expressed in terms of the Hawking temperature. Furthermore, as one expects for
SUSY Hamiltonians, the isolated bottom state has a real null energy eigenvalue.Comment: Version to be published in European Physical Journal
