PQChPT with Staggered Sea and Valence Ginsparg-Wilson Quarks: Vector Meson Masses
We consider partially quenched, mixed chiral perturbation theory with
staggered sea and Ginsparg-Wilson valence quarks in order to extract a
chiral-continuum extrapolation expression for the vector meson mass up to order
O(a^2), at one-loop level. Based on general principles, we accomplish the task
without explicitly constructing a sophisticated, heavy vector meson chiral

Internally damped, self-arresting vertical drop-weight impact test apparatus
A vertical dropped-weight impact test machine has a dropped-weight barrel vertically supported on upper and lower support brackets. The dropped-weight barrel is chambered to receive a dropped-weight assembly having a latch pin at its upper end, a damping unit in the middle, and a tup at its lower end. The tup is adapted for gathering data during impact testing. The latch pin releasably engages a latch pin coupling assembly. The latch pin coupling assembly is attached to a winch via a halyard for raising and lowering the dropped-weight assembly. The lower end of the dropped-weight barrel is provided with a bounce-back arresting mechanism which is activated by the descending passage of the dropped-weight assembly. After striking the specimen, the dropped-weight assembly rebounds vertically and is caught by the bounce-back arresting mechanism. The damping unit of the dropped-weight assembly serves to dissipate energy from the rebounding dropped-weight assembly and prevents the dropped-weight assembly from rebounding from the self-arresting mechanism
Temporal discounting for self and friends in adolescence:A fMRI study
Adolescence is characterized by impulsivity but also by increased importance of friendships. This study took the novel perspective of testing temporal discounting in a fMRI task where choices could affect outcomes for 96 adolescents (aged 10–20-years) themselves and their best friend. Decisions either benefitted themselves (i.e., the Self Immediate – Self Delay’ condition) or their friend (i.e., ‘Friend Immediate – Friend Delay’ condition); or juxtaposed rewards for themselves and their friends (i.e., the ‘Self Immediate – Friend Delay’ or ‘Friend Immediate – Self Delay’ conditions). We observed that younger adolescents were more impulsive; and all participants were more impulsive when this was associated with an immediate benefit for friends. Individual differences analyses revealed increased activity in the subgenual anterior cingulate cortex extending in the ventral striatum for immediate relative to delayed reward choices for self. Temporal choices were associated with activity in the prefrontal cortex, parietal cortex, insula, and ventral striatum, but only activity in the right inferior parietal lobe was associated with age. Finally, temporal delay choices for friends relative to self were associated with increased activity in the temporo-parietal junction and precuneus. Overall, this study shows a unique role of the social context in adolescents’ temporal decision making.</p
Measuring Active-Sterile Neutrino Oscillations with a Stopped Pion Neutrino Source
The question of the existence of light sterile neutrinos is of great interest
in many areas of particle physics, astrophysics, and cosmology. Furthermore,
should the MiniBooNE experiment at Fermilab confirm the LSND oscillation
signal, then new measurements are required to identify the mechanism
responsible for these oscillations. Possibilities include sterile neutrinos, CP
or CPT violation, variable mass neutrinos, Lorentz violation, and extra
dimensions. In this paper, we consider an experiment at a stopped pion neutrino
source to determine if active-sterile neutrino oscillations with delta-m
greater than 0.1 eV2 can account for the signal. By exploiting stopped pi+
decay to produce a monoenergetic nu_mu source, and measuring the rate of the
neutral current reaction nu_x + 12C -> nu_x +12C* as a function of distance
from the source, we show that a convincing test for active-sterile neutrino

A model-based assessment of the effects of projected climate change on the water resources of Jordan
This paper is concerned with the quantification of the likely effect of anthropogenic climate change on the water resources of Jordan by the end of the twenty-first century. Specifically, a suite of hydrological models are used in conjunction with modelled outcomes from a regional climate model, HadRM3, and a weather generator to determine how future flows in the upper River Jordan and in the Wadi Faynan may change. The results indicate that groundwater will play an important role in the water security of the country as irrigation demands increase. Given future projections of reduced winter rainfall and increased near-surface air temperatures, the already low groundwater recharge will decrease further. Interestingly, the modelled discharge at the Wadi Faynan indicates that extreme flood flows will increase in magnitude, despite a decrease in the mean annual rainfall. Simulations projected no increase in flood magnitude in the upper River Jordan. Discussion focuses on the utility of the modelling framework, the problems of making quantitative forecasts and the implications of reduced water availability in Jordan
A Letter of Intent to Build a MiniBooNE Near Detector: BooNE
There is accumulating evidence for a difference between neutrino and
antineutrino oscillations at the eV scale. The MiniBooNE
experiment observes an unexplained excess of electron-like events at low
energies in neutrino mode, which may be due, for example, to either a neutral
current radiative interaction, sterile neutrino decay, or to neutrino
oscillations involving sterile neutrinos and which may be related to the LSND
signal. No excess of electron-like events (), however, is
observed so far at low energies in antineutrino mode. Furthermore, global 3+1
and 3+2 sterile neutrino fits to the world neutrino and antineutrino data
suggest a difference between neutrinos and antineutrinos with significant
() disappearance. In order to
test whether the low-energy excess is due to neutrino oscillations and whether
there is a difference between and disappearance, we
propose building a second MiniBooNE detector at (or moving the existing
MiniBooNE detector to) a distance of m from the Booster Neutrino
Beam (BNB) production target. With identical detectors at different distances,
most of the systematic errors will cancel when taking a ratio of events in the
two detectors, as the neutrino flux varies as to a calculable
approximation. This will allow sensitive tests of oscillations for both
and appearance and and disappearance.
Furthermore, a comparison between oscillations in neutrino mode and
antineutrino mode will allow a sensitive search for CP and CPT violation in the
lepton sector at short baseline ( eV).Comment: 43 pages, 40 figure
Electromagnetic contributions to pseudoscalar masses
We report on the calculation by the MILC Collaboration of the electromagnetic effects on kaon
and pion masses. These masses are computed in QCD with dynamical (asqtad staggered) quarks
plus quenched photons at three lattice spacings varying from 0.12 to 0.06 fm. The masses are fit
to staggered chiral perturbation theory with NLO electromagnetic terms, as well as analytic terms
at higher order. We extrapolate the results to physical light-quark masses and to the continuum
limit. At the current stage of the analysis, most, but not all, of the systematic errors have been
estimated. The main goal is the comparison of kaon electromagnetic splittings to those of the
pion, i.e., an evaluation of the corrections to “Dashen’s theorem.” This in turn will allow us to
significantly reduce the systematic errors in our determination of m<sub>u</sub>/m<sub>d</sub>
