Do Casinos Export Bankruptcy?
This paper measures the extent to which destination resort casinos export bankruptcy back to visitors’ home states. Previous literature has alluded to this possibility, but to date studies have only examined the influence of local casinos on local bankruptcy. Using various survey data, we calculate the number of visits from each state to casino resort destinations in Nevada, New Jersey, and Mississippi. We find strong evidence that states having more residents who visit out-of-state casino resorts have higher bankruptcy filings. This effect is dominant in the south, suggesting that casinos located in wealthier regions are less likely to export bankruptcy.Casino gambling, bankruptcy, export

Ab initio study of semiconducting carbon nanotubes adsorbed on the Si(100) surface: diameter- and registration-dependent atomic configurations and electronic properties
We present a first-principles study of semiconducting carbon nanotubes
adsorbed on the unpassivated Si(100) surface. We have found metallicity for the
combined system caused by n-doping of the silicon slab representing the surface
by the SWNT. We confirm this metallicity for nanotubes of different diameters
and chiral angles, and find the effect to be independent of the orientation of
the nanotubes on the surface. We also present adsorption energetics and
configurations which show semiconducting SWNTs farther apart from the surface
and transferring less charge, in comparison with metallic SWNTs of similar
diameter.Comment: Replaces old (Jan 2006) version; more supporting material. 11 pages,

Dynamic filtering of static dipoles in magnetoencephalography
We consider the problem of estimating neural activity from measurements
of the magnetic fields recorded by magnetoencephalography. We exploit
the temporal structure of the problem and model the neural current as a
collection of evolving current dipoles, which appear and disappear, but whose
locations are constant throughout their lifetime. This fully reflects the physiological
interpretation of the model.
In order to conduct inference under this proposed model, it was necessary
to develop an algorithm based around state-of-the-art sequential Monte
Carlo methods employing carefully designed importance distributions. Previous
work employed a bootstrap filter and an artificial dynamic structure
where dipoles performed a random walk in space, yielding nonphysical artefacts
in the reconstructions; such artefacts are not observed when using the
proposed model. The algorithm is validated with simulated data, in which
it provided an average localisation error which is approximately half that of
the bootstrap filter. An application to complex real data derived from a somatosensory
experiment is presented. Assessment of model fit via marginal
likelihood showed a clear preference for the proposed model and the associated
reconstructions show better localisation
Weak Hopf algebras corresponding to Cartan matrices
We replace the group of group-like elements of the quantized enveloping
algebra of a finite dimensional semisimple Lie algebra
by some regular monoid and get the weak Hopf algebra
. It is a new subclass of weak Hopf algebras
but not Hopf algebras. Then we devote to constructing a basis of
and determine the group of weak Hopf algebra
automorphisms of when is not a root of

When the State is Evil: Biblical Civil (Dis)Obedience in South Africa
(Excerpt)
A close reading of the New Testament, though, reveals that there is not one uniform answer to this question. The New Testament does not prescribe one appropriate stance for Christians to take against the civil authorities. Rather, there appear to be alternate (or perhaps various) stances that are permitted, depending on the exigencies of the time and the various circumstances. To explore this thesis, Part I explores biblical texts in Acts-Jude that speak to the relationship between Christians and the civil government, with a particular focus upon Acts 5:28 and Romans 13:1-7. Part II, which is the heart of the Article, provides a modern case study of the use of the two competing biblical themes of submission versus resistance; the South African apartheid regime, and resistance to the same, provide the backdrop. Finally, in the Conclusion we offer some reflections on what modern Christians might learn from the biblical texts and the South African experience
