Emission Optics of the Steigerwald Type Electron Gun
The emission optics of a Steigerwald type electron gun is re-examined. The
virtual and real points of divergence, divergence angles and beam-widths of the
electron beams at different telefocusing strength are measured in detail for
first time . Two different Wehnelt cylinders are used to establish a
contrasting viewpoint. The original `focusing' curves measured by Braucks are
reconstructed and will be explained only through a `new' interpretation which
is different from the conventional views. While the image of the emitting
surface in front of the filament is indeed telefocused beyond the anode, the
envelope of the beam does not `focus' as expected. A new model for the emission
mechanism is established based on our results.Comment: 14 pages, 10 figure
Prediction for unintegrated parton distributions
Unintegrated parton distributions in the proton and nucleus are predicted by
a modified DGLAP equation incorporating the shadowing corrections, which
include exact energy-momentum conservation in each splitting and fusion
vertices. We find that the nuclear shadowing effects are obvious, although they
are far from the saturation limit. On the other hand, we point out that the
suppression of the unintegrated gluon distribution toward lower may

Upgrades of beam diagnostics in support of emittance-exchange experiments at the Fermilab A0 photoinjector
The possibility of using electron beam phase space manipulations to support a
free-electron laser accelerator design optimization has motivated our research.
An on-going program demonstrating the exchange of transverse horizontal and
longitudinal emittances at the Fermilab A0 photoinjector has benefited recently
from the upgrade of several of the key diagnostics stations. Accurate
measurements of these properties upstream and downstream of the exchanger
beamline are needed. Improvements in the screen resolution term and reduced
impact of the optical system's depth-of-focus by using YAG:Ce single crystals
normal to the beam direction will be described. The requirement to measure
small energy spreads (<10 keV) in the spectrometer and the exchange process
which resulted in bunch lengths less than 500 fs led to other diagnostics
performance adjustments and upgrades as well. A longitudinal to transverse

Evolution of population with sexual and asexual reproduction in changing environment
Using a lattice model based on Monte Carlo simulations, we study the role of
the reproduction pattern on the fate of an evolving population. Each individual
is under the selection pressure from the environment and random mutations. The
habitat ("climate") is changing periodically. Evolutions of populations
following two reproduction patterns are compared, asexual and sexual. We show,
via Monte Carlo simulations, that sexual reproduction by keeping more
diversified populations gives them better chances to adapt themselves to the
changing environment. However, in order to obtain a greater chance to mate, the
birth rate should be high. In the case of low birth rate and high mutation

Measurement of the c-axis optical reflectance of AFeAs (A=Ba, Sr) single crystals: Evidence of different mechanisms for the formation of two energy gaps
We present the c-axis optical reflectance measurement on single crystals of
BaFeAs and SrFeAs, the parent compounds of FeAs based
superconductors. Different from the ab-plane optical response where two
distinct energy gaps were observed in the SDW state, only the smaller energy
gap could be seen clearly for \textbf{E}c-axis. The very pronounced
energy gap structure seen at a higher energy scale for
\textbf{E}ab-plane is almost invisible. We propose a novel picture
for the band structure evolution across the SDW transition and suggest
different driving mechanisms for the formation of the two energy gaps.Comment: 4 page
Optimized Formation of Benzyl Isothiocyanate by Endogenous Enzyme and its Extraction from Carica Papaya Seed
Purpose: To use endogenous myrosinase in Carica papaya seed to convert benzyl glucosinolate (BG) to benzyl isothiocyanate (BITC) and then extract it for further studies.Methods: Process variables including seed powder particle size, sample-to-solvent ratio, pH of buffer solution, enzymolysis temperature, enzymolysis time were investigated using single-factor experiments and response surface methodology coupled with Box-Behnken design for further optimization of conversion conditions. The formed benzyl isothiocyanate was extracted by steam distillation method and purified by thin-layer chromatography (TLC). Relevant process variables were also studied. Finally, the purified benzyl isothiocyanate was analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometer (GC-MS) and compared to BITC standard.Results: Optimum enzymolysis conditions were seed powder particle size, 90 - 120 µm; sample-tosolvent ratio, 1:20; pH of buffer solution, 4.8; enzymolysis temperature, 40 0C; and enzymolysis time, 27 min. Enzymolysis liquid was steam-distilled for 2 h, extracted twice using dichloromethane (DCM) (using 3 times the volume of distillate each time) as extractant. Finally, 1:20 was adopted as the optimal dichloromethane-petroleum ether (DCM-PE) elution proportion to wash out the unnecessarycompounds.Conclusion: The result showed that benzyl isothiocyanate was formed under the optimized conditions and was no doubt the basic component of the extraction.Keywords: Carica papaya, Benzyl isothiocyanate, Endogenous myrosinase, Enzymolysis, Extractio
