Once again: Instanton method vs. WKB
A recent analytic test of the instanton method performed by comparing the
exact spectrum of the Lam potential (derived from representations
of a finite dimensional matrix expressed in terms of generators) with
the results of the tight--binding and instanton approximations as well as the
standard WKB approximation is commented upon. It is pointed out that in the
case of the Lam potential as well as others the WKB--related method
of matched asymptotic expansions yields the exact instanton result as a result
of boundary conditions imposed on wave functions which are matched in domains
of overlap.Comment: 10 pages, no figures. References list revised according to JHE
Application of Instantons: Quenching of Macroscopic Quantum Coherence and Macroscopic Fermi-Particle Configurations
Starting from the coherent state representation of the evolution operator
with the help of the path-integral, we derive a formula for the low-lying
levels of a quantum spin
system. The quenching of macroscopic quantum coherence is understood as the
vanishing of in disagreement with the suppression of tunneling
(i.e. ) as claimed in the literature. A new
configuration called the macroscopic Fermi-particle is suggested by the
character of its wave function. The tunneling rate
() does not vanish, not for integer spin s nor for
a half-integer value of s, and is calculated explicitly (for the position
dependent mass) up to the one-loop approximation.Comment: 13 pages, LaTex, no figure
Characteristics of phonon transmission across epitaxial interfaces: a lattice dynamic study
Phonon transmission across epitaxial interfaces is studied within the lattice
dynamic approach. The transmission shows weak dependence on frequency for the
lattice wave with a fixed angle of incidence. The dependence on azimuth angle
is found to be related to the symmetry of the boundary interface. The
transmission varies smoothly with the change of the incident angle. A critical
angle of incidence exists when the phonon is incident from the side with large
group velocities to the side with low ones. No significant mode conversion is
observed among different acoustic wave branches at the interface, except when
the incident angle is near the critical value. Our theoretical result of the
Kapitza conductance across the Si-Ge (100) interface at temperature
K is 4.6\times10^{8} {\rm WK}^{-1}{\rmm}^{-2}. A scaling law at low temperature is also reported. Based on the features of
transmission obtained within lattice dynamic approach, we propose a simplified
formula for thermal conductanceacross the epitaxial interface. A reasonable
consistency is found between the calculated values and the experimentally
measured ones.Comment: 8 figure
A Novel FastICA Method for the Reference-based Contrast Functions
This paper deals with the efficient optimization problem of Cumulant-based contrast criteria in the Blind Source Separation (BSS) framework, in which sources are retrieved by maximizing the Kurtosis contrast function. Combined with the recently proposed reference-based contrast schemes, a new fast fixed-point (FastICA) algorithm is proposed for the case of linear and instantaneous mixture. Due to its quadratic dependence on the number of searched parameters, the main advantage of this new method consists in the significant decrement of computational speed, which is particularly striking with large number of samples. The method is essentially similar to the classical algorithm based on the Kurtosis contrast function, but differs in the fact that the reference-based idea is utilized. The validity of this new method was demonstrated by simulations
Interfacial thermal transport in atomic junctions
We study ballistic interfacial thermal transport across atomic junctions.
Exact expressions for phonon transmission coefficients are derived for thermal
transport in one-junction and two-junction chains, and verified by numerical
calculation based on a nonequilibrium Green's function method. For a
single-junction case, we find that the phonon transmission coefficient
typically decreases monotonically with increasing freqency. However, in the
range between equal frequency spectrum and equal acoustic impedance, it
increases first then decreases, which explains why the Kapitza resistance
calculated from the acoustic mismatch model is far larger than the experimental
values at low temperatures. The junction thermal conductance reaches a maximum
when the interfacial coupling equals the harmonic average of the spring
constants of the two semi-infinite chains. For three-dimensional junctions, in
the weak coupling limit, we find that the conductance is proportional to the
square of the interfacial coupling, while for intermediate coupling strength
the conductance is approximately proportional to the interfacial coupling
strength. For two-junction chains, the transmission coefficient oscillates with
the frequency due to interference effects. The oscillations between the two
envelop lines can be understood analytically, thus providing guidelines in
designing phonon frequency filters.Comment: 10 pages, 13 figures. Accepted by Phys. Rev.
Electronic States and Magnetism of Mn Impurities and Dimers in Narrow-Gap and Wide-Gap III-V Semiconductors
Electronic states and magnetic properties of single impurity and dimer
doped in narrow-gap and wide-gap - semiconductors have been studied
systematically. It has been found that in the ground state for single
impurity, - complex is antiferromagnetic (AFM) coupling when -
hybridization is large and both the hole level and the
impurity level are close to the midgap; or very weak ferromagnetic (FM)
when is small and both and are deep in the valence band.
In dimer situation, the spins are AFM coupling for half-filled or
full-filled orbits; on the contrast, the Mn spins are double-exchange-like
FM coupling for any -orbits away from half-filling. We propose the strong
{\it p-d} hybridized double exchange mechanism is responsible for the FM order
in diluted - semiconductors
Semiquantum key distribution using entangled states
Recently, Boyer et al. presented a novel semiquantum key distribution
protocol [M. Boyer, D. Kenigsberg, and T. Mor, Phys. Rev. Lett. 99, 140501
(2007)], by using four quantum states, each of which is randomly prepared by Z
basis or X basis. Here we present a semiquantum key distribution protocol by
using entangled states in which quantum Alice shares a secret key with
classical Bob. We also show the protocol is secure against eavesdropping.Comment: 6 page
Renormalized One-loop Theory of Correlations in Disordered Diblock Copolymers
A renormalized one-loop theory (ROL) is used to calculate corrections to the
random phase approximation (RPA) for the structure factor \Sc(q) in
disordered diblock copolymer melts. Predictions are given for the peak
intensity , peak position , and single-chain
statistics for symmetric and asymmetric copolymers as functions of ,
where is the Flory-Huggins interaction parameter and is the degree
of polymerization. The ROL and Fredrickson-Helfand (FH) theories are found to
yield asymptotically equivalent results for the dependence of the peak
intensity upon for symmetric diblock copolymers in the
limit of strong scattering, or large , but yield qualitatively
different predictions for symmetric copolymers far from the ODT and for
asymmetric copolymers. The ROL theory predicts a suppression of
and a decrease of for large values of , relative to the RPA
predictions, but an enhancement of and an increase in
for small (). By separating intra- and
inter-molecular contributions to , we show that the decrease in
near the ODT is caused by the dependence of the intermolecular
direct correlation function, and is unrelated to any change in single-chain
statistics, but that the increase in at small values of is
a result of non-Gaussian single-chain statistics.Comment: 16 pages, 13 figures, submitted to J. Chem. Phy
An Efficient Algorithm by Kurtosis Maximization in Reference-Based Framework
This paper deals with the optimization of kurtosis for complex-valued signals in the independent component analysis (ICA) framework, where source signals are linearly and instantaneously mixed. Inspired by the recently proposed reference-based contrast schemes, a similar contrast function is put forward, based on which a new fast fixed-point (FastICA) algorithm is proposed. The new optimization method is similar in spirit to the former classical kurtosis-based FastICA algorithm but differs in the fact that it is much more efficient than the latter in terms of computational speed, which is significantly striking with large number of samples. The performance of this new algorithm is confirmed through computer simulations
