Low cost silicon solar array project silicon materials task: Establishment of the feasibility of a process capable of low-cost, high volume production of silane (step 1) and the pyrolysis of silane to semiconductor-grade silicon (step 2)
A quartz fluid bed reactor capable of operating at temperatures of up to 1000 C was designed, constructed, and successfully operated. During a 30 minute experiment, silane was decomposed within the reactor with no pyrolysis occurring on the reactor wall or on the gas injection system. A hammer mill/roller-crusher system appeared to be the most practical method for producing seed material from bulk silicon. No measurable impurities were detected in the silicon powder produced by the free space reactor, using the cathode layer emission spectroscopic technique. Impurity concentration followed by emission spectroscopic examination of the residue indicated a total impurity level of 2 micrograms/gram. A pellet cast from this powder had an electrical resistivity of 35 to 45 ohm-cm and P-type conductivity
Confocal microscopic analysis of optical crosstalk in GaN micro-pixel light-emitting diodes
© 2015 AIP Publishing LLC. The optical crosstalk phenomenon in GaN micro-pixel light-emitting diodes (LED) has been investigated by confocal microscopy. Depth-resolved confocal emission images indicate light channeling along the GaN and sapphire layers as the source of crosstalk. Thin-film micro-pixel devices are proposed, whereby the light-trapping sapphire layers are removed by laser lift-off. Optical crosstalk is significantly reduced but not eliminated due to the remaining GaN layer. Another design involving micro-pixels which are completely isolated is further proposed; such devices exhibited low-noise and enhanced optical performances, which are important attributes for high-density micro-pixel LED applications including micro-displays and multi-channel optical communications.published_or_final_versio
Rotation of Coulomb crystals in a magnetized inductively coupled complex plasma
Under suitable conditions, micron-sized dust particles introduced into inductively coupled argon plasma form a stable microscopic crystal lattice, known as a Coulomb (or plasma) crystal. In the experiment described, an external axial magnetic field was applied to various configurations of Coulomb crystal, including small crystal lattices consisting of one to several particles, and large crystal lattices with many hundreds of particles. The crystals were observed to rotate collectively under the influence of the magnetic field. This paper describes the experimental procedures and the preliminary results of this investigation
Thermal stability of titanium nitride for shallow junction solar cell contacts
To demonstrate the thermal stability of titanium nitride as a high-temperature diffusion barrier, the TiN-Ti-Ag metallization scheme has been tested on shallow-junction (~2000 Å) Si solar cells. Electrical measurements on reference samples with the Ti-Ag metallization scheme show serious degradation after a 600 °C, 10-min annealing. With the TiN-Ti-Ag scheme, no degradation of cell performance is observed after the same heat treatment if the TiN layer is >~1700 Å. The glass encapsulation of cells by electrostatic bonding requires such a heat treatment
Financial Crisis and the Comovements of Housing Sub-markets: Do relationships change after a crisis?
This study of the co-movements of the transaction prices and trading volumes reveal that the mean correlation of prices, and trading volumes alike, among different housing sub-markets increases during the market boom. After a financial crisis, the correlations drop dramatically and stay low. The distribution of the correlations changes from skewed to symmetric. All these coincide with the increase in the total variance of prices, as well as the share of the idiosyncratic component in the total variance after the crisis. These findings are consistent to a family of theories which emphasize on “regime switch” in expectation.financial crisis; hedonic pricing; structural break; evolution of valuation; rolling regression
Is ghrelin a biomarker for mortality in end-stage renal disease?
Ghrelin is involved in the pathogenesis of protein-energy wasting (PEW), inflammation, and cardiovascular complications in end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Plasma ghrelin may prove to be a powerful biomarker of mortality in ESRD but should be considered in the context of assay specificity, other weight-regulating hormones, nutritional status, systemic inflammation, and cardiovascular risk factors. ESRD patients with PEW, systemic inflammation, and low ghrelin and high leptin concentrations have the highest mortality risk and may benefit the most from ghrelin therapy
Ghrelin in Chronic Kidney Disease
Patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) often exhibit symptoms of anorexia and cachexia, which are associated with decreased quality of life and increased mortality. Chronic inflammation may be an important mechanism for the development of anorexia, cachexia, renal osteodystrophy, and increased cardiovascular risk in CKD. Ghrelin is a gastric hormone. The biological effects of ghrelin are mediated through the growth hormone secretagogue receptor (GHSR). The salutary effects of ghrelin on food intake and meal appreciation suggest that ghrelin could be an effective treatment for anorexic CKD patients. In addition to its appetite-stimulating effects, ghrelin has been shown to possess anti-inflammatory properties. The known metabolic effects of ghrelin and the potential implications in CKD will be discussed in this review. The strength, shortcomings, and unanswered questions related to ghrelin treatment in CKD will be addressed
Nonperturbative Determination of Heavy Meson Bound States
In this paper we obtain a heavy meson bound state equation from the heavy
quark equation of motion in heavy quark effective theory (HQET) and the heavy
meson effective field theory we developed very recently. The bound state
equation is a covariant extention of the light-front bound state equation for
heavy mesons derived from light-front QCD and HQET. We determine the covariant
heavy meson wave function variationally by minimizing the binding energy
. Subsequently the other basic HQET parameters and
, and the heavy quark masses and can also be
consistently determined.Comment: 15 pages, 1 figur
