First Principles Studies on 3-Dimentional Strong Topological Insulators: Bi2Te3, Bi2Se3 and Sb2Te3

Bi2Se3, Bi2Te3 and Sb2Te3 compounds are recently predicted to be 3-dimentional (3D) strong topological insulators. In this paper, based on ab-initio calculations, we study in detail the topological nature and the surface states of this family compounds. The penetration depth and the spin-resolved Fermi surfaces of the surface states will be analyzed. We will also present an procedure, from which highly accurate effective Hamiltonian can be constructed, based on projected atomic Wannier functions (which keep the symmetries of the systems). Such Hamiltonian can be used to study the semi-infinite systems or slab type supercells efficiently. Finally, we discuss the 3D topological phase transition in Sb2(Te1-xSex)3 alloy system.Comment: 8 pages,17 figure

Levinson's Theorem for Non-local Interactions in Two Dimensions

In the light of the Sturm-Liouville theorem, the Levinson theorem for the Schr\"{o}dinger equation with both local and non-local cylindrically symmetric potentials is studied. It is proved that the two-dimensional Levinson theorem holds for the case with both local and non-local cylindrically symmetric cutoff potentials, which is not necessarily separable. In addition, the problems related to the positive-energy bound states and the physically redundant state are also discussed in this paper.Comment: Latex 11 pages, no figure, submitted to J. Phys. Enhanced Orbital Degeneracy in Momentum Space for LaOFeAs

The Fermi surfaces (FS) of LaOFeAs (in kzk_z=0 plane) consist of two hole-type circles around Γ\Gamma point, which do not touch each other, and two electron-type co-centered ellipses around M point, which are degenerate along the M-X line. By first-principles calculations, here we show that additional degeneracy exists for the two electron-type FS, and the crucial role of F-doping and pressure is to enhance this orbital degeneracy. It is suggested that the inter-orbital fluctuation is the key point to understand the unconventional superconductivity in these materials.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure

Nanoscale probing of asymmetric magnetization reversal in perpendicularly exchange biased Pt/Co/Pt/IrMn multilayers

    Get PDF
Asymmetric magnetization reversal in perpendicularly exchange biased Pt/Co/Pt/IrMn multilayers was studied in nanometer scale by non-contact magnetic force microscopy with variable highly localized bipolar magnetic fields of the MFM tip. The hysteresis process of domain nucleation and pinned domain wall motion has been triggered and mapped simultaneously through MFM. Unstable magnetization reversal of submicron domains has been directly observed as well as exchange bias induced asymmetry in the depinning fields for domain wall motion. The current results demonstrated a possible way to locally mapping and manipulating novel magnetic nano-structures such as vortices and Skyrmions

Levinson's Theorem for the Klein-Gordon Equation in Two Dimensions

The two-dimensional Levinson theorem for the Klein-Gordon equation with a cylindrically symmetric potential V(r)V(r) is established. It is shown that Nmπ=π(nm+nm)=[δm(M)+β1][δm(M)+β2]N_{m}\pi=\pi (n_{m}^{+}-n_{m}^{-})= [\delta_{m}(M)+\beta_{1}]-[\delta_{m}(-M)+\beta_{2}], where NmN_{m} denotes the difference between the number of bound states of the particle nm+n_{m}^{+} and the ones of antiparticle nmn_{m}^{-} with a fixed angular momentum mm, and the δm\delta_{m} is named phase shifts. The constants β1\beta_{1} and β2\beta_{2} are introduced to symbol the critical cases where the half bound states occur at E=±ME=\pm M.Comment: Revtex file 14 pages, submitted to Phys. Rev.

Fermion localization on asymmetric two-field thick branes

In this paper we investigate the localization of fermions on asymmetric thick branes generated by two scalars ϕ\phi and χ\chi. In order to trap fermions on the asymmetric branes with kink-like warp factors, the couplings with the background scalars ηΨˉF(χ,ϕ)Ψ\eta\bar{\Psi}F(\chi,\phi)\Psi are introduced, where F(χ,ϕ)F(\chi,\phi) is a function of ϕ\phi and χ\chi. We find that the coupling ηΨˉχϕΨ\eta\bar{\Psi}\chi\phi\Psi do not support the localization of 4-dimensional fermions on the branes. While, for the case ηΨˉχΨ+ηΨˉϕΨ\eta\bar{\Psi}\chi\Psi+\eta'\bar{\Psi}\phi\Psi, which is the kink-fermion coupling corresponding to one-scalar-generated brane scenarios, the zero mode of left-handed fermions could be trapped on the branes under some conditions.Comment: v2: 11 pages, 4 figures, accepted by CQ

Pairing symmetry and properties of iron-based high temperature superconductors

Pairing symmetry is important to indentify the pairing mechanism. The analysis becomes particularly timely and important for the newly discovered iron-based multi-orbital superconductors. From group theory point of view we classified all pairing matrices (in the orbital space) that carry irreducible representations of the system. The quasiparticle gap falls into three categories: full, nodal and gapless. The nodal-gap states show conventional Volovik effect even for on-site pairing. The gapless states are odd in orbital space, have a negative superfluid density and are therefore unstable. In connection to experiments we proposed possible pairing states and implications for the pairing mechanism.Comment: 4 pages, 1 table, 2 figures, polished versio

    The Electron Pairing of Kx_xFe2y_{2-y}Se2_2

We studied the pairing instabilities in Kx_xFe2y_{2-y}Se2_2 using a two stage functional renormalization group (FRG) method. Our results suggest the leading and subleading pairing symmetries are nodeless dx2y2d_{x^2-y^2} and nodal extended ss respectively. In addition, despite having no Fermi surfaces we find the buried hole bands make important contributions to the final effective interaction. From the bandstructure, spin susceptibility and the FRG results we conclude that the low energy effective interaction in Kx_xFe2y_{2-y}Se2_2 is well described by a J1J2J_1-J_2 model with dominant nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic interaction J1J_1 (at least as far as the superconducting pairing is concerned). In the end we briefly mention several obvious experiments to test whether the pairing symmetry is indeed dx2y2d_{x^2-y^2}.Comment: typo in Eq.(7) corrected on top of published version, 15 pages, 7 figures, double line spacin
