    Effect of Tryptophan Analogs on Derepression of the \u3cem\u3eEscherichia coli\u3c/em\u3e Tryptophan Operon by Indole-3-Propionic Acid

    The abilities of 14 tryptophan analogs to repress the tryptophan (trp) operon have been studied in Escherichia coli cells derepressed by incubation with 0.25 mM indole-3-propionic acid (IPA). trp operon expression was monitored by measuring the specific activities of anthranilate synthase (EC 4.1.3.27) and the tryptophan synthase (EC 4.2.1.20) β subunit. Analogs characterized by modification or removal of the α-amino group or the α-carboxyl group did not repress the trp operon. The only analogs among this group that appeared to interact with the trp aporepressor were IPA, which derepressed the trp operon, and d-tryptophan. Analogs with modifications of the indole ring repressed the trp operon to various degrees. 7-Methyl-tryptophan inhibited anthranilate synthase activity and consequently derepressed the trp operon. Additionally, 7-methyltryptophan prevented IPA-mediated derepression but, unlike tryptophan, did so in a non-coordinate manner, with the later enzymes of the operon being relatively more repressed than the early enzymes. The effect of 7-methyltryptophan on IPA-mediated derepression was likely not due to the interaction of IPA with the allosteric site of anthranilate synthase, even though feedback-resistant mutants of anthranilate synthase were partially resistant to derepression by IPA. The effect of 7-methyltryptophan on derepression by IPA was probably due to the effect of the analog-aporepressor complex on trp operon expression

    Electrostatic instability of ring current protons beyond the plasmapause during injection events

    The stability of ring current protons with an injection spectrum modeled by an m = 2 mirror distribution function was examined for typical ring current parameters. It was found that the high frequency loss cone mode can be excited at wave numbers K lambda sub Di about = to 0.1 to 0.5, at frequencies omega about = to (0.2 to 0.6) omega sub pi and with growth rates up to gamma/omega about = to 0.03. These waves interact with the main body of the proton distribution and propagate nearly perpendicular to the local magnetic field. Cold particle partial densities tend to reduce the growth rate so that the waves are quenched at or near to the plasmapause boundary. Wave e-folding lengths are comparable to 0.1 R sub e, compared to the value of about 4 R sub e found for ion cyclotron waves at the same plasma conditions

    Electron plasma oscillations in the near-earth solar wind: Preliminary observations and interpretations

    Preliminary results and conclusions of a study of electric field oscillations in the upstream solar wind are reported. The OGO-5 orbits are on the dusk (three) and on the dawn (one) sides of the earth-sun line. It is concluded that there are electron streams produced at or near the bow shock. These streams penetrate the incoming solar wind plasma, and generate quasi-electromagnetic waves. The streams (as inferred from the wave levels) occur without regard to dawn-dusk location, as opposed to the low-frequency MHD upstream disturbances driven by backstreaming protons, which show a definitely strong preference for the dawn-noon sector. The presence of the suprathermal electron streams and associated wave turbulence indicates that some near-earth electron distributions are probably not representative of true solar wind distributions far away from the earth

    Simultaneous observations of plasma waves from the electric field instruments on Pioneer 9 and OGO 5 are used to illustrate the difference between near-earth and deep space conditions. It is shown that the experimental study of true interplanetary wave-particle interactions is difficult to carry out from an earth orbiter because the earth provides significant fluxes of nonthermal particles that generate intense plasma turbulence in the upstream region
