    On the Cardinality of Positively Linearly Independent Sets

    Positive bases, which play a key role in understanding derivative free optimization methods that use a direct search framework, are positive spanning sets that are positively linearly independent. The cardinality of a positive basis in Rn\R^n has been established to be between n+1n+1 and 2n2n (with both extremes existing). The lower bound is immediate from being a positive spanning set, while the upper bound uses {\em both} positive spanning and positively linearly independent. In this note, we provide details proving that a positively linearly independent set in Rn\R^n for n{1,2}n \in \{1, 2\} has at most 2n2n elements, but a positively linearly independent set in Rn\R^n for n3n\geq 3 can have an arbitrary number of elements

    Dynamics of a tight-binding ring threaded by time-periodic magnetic flux

    We analytically study the effects of periodically alternating magnetic fields on the dynamics of a tight-binding ring. It is shown that an arbitrary quantum state can be frozen coherently at will by the very frequent square-wave field as well as the monochromatic-wave field when the corresponding optimal amplitudes are taken. Numerical simulations show that the average fidelity depends on not only the system parameters, but also the features of the quantum state. Moreover, taking the initial zero-momentum Gaussian wave packets as examples, we show the dependence of the threshold frequency on the width of the packet for the given average fidelities.     The crystal structure of thiourea nitrate

    The structure of thiourea nitrate has been determined by three-dimensional X-ray methods. Both Cu Ke and Mo K~ data were obtained with a single-crystal diffractometer and the final R values are 4.9% and 5.5% respectively. The space group is P211m and there are two molecules in the unit cell. All atoms, including hydrogen, lie on mirror planes. The whole structure is built up of layers of atoms, the atoms within each layer being linked by a network of hydrogen bonds

    Plasmon geometric phase and plasmon Hall shift

    The collective plasmonic modes of a metal comprise a pattern of charge density and tightly-bound electric fields that oscillate in lock-step to yield enhanced light-matter interaction. Here we show that metals with non-zero Hall conductivity host plasmons with a fine internal structure: they are characterized by a current density configuration that sharply departs from that of ordinary zero Hall conductivity metals. This non-trivial internal structure dramatically enriches the dynamics of plasmon propagation, enabling plasmon wavepackets to acquire geometric phases as they scatter. Strikingly, at boundaries these phases accumulate allowing plasmon waves that reflect off to experience a non-reciprocal parallel shift along the boundary displacing the incident and reflected plasmon trajectories. This plasmon Hall shift, tunable by Hall conductivity as well as plasmon wavelength, displays the chirality of the plasmon's current distribution and can be probed by near-field photonics techniques. Anomalous plasmon dynamics provide a real-space window into the inner structure of plasmon bands, as well as new means for directing plasmonic beams

    E-commerce development and applications have been bringing the Internet to business and marketing and reforming our current business styles and processes. The rapid development of the Web, in particular, the introduction of the semantic web and web service technologies, enables business processes, modeling and management to enter an entirely new stage. Traditional web based business data and transactions can now be analyzed, extracted and modeled to discover new business rules and to form new business strategies, let alone mining the business data in order to classify customers or products. In this paper, we investigate and analyze the business integration models in the context of web services using a micro-payment system because a micro-payment system is considered to be a service intensive activity, where many payment tasks involve different forms of services, such as payment method selection for buyers, security support software, product price comparison, etc. We will use the micro-payment case to discuss and illustrate how the web services approaches support and transform the business process and integration model.

    Energy-driven Drag at Charge Neutrality in Graphene

    Coulomb coupling between proximal layers in graphene heterostructures results in efficient energy transfer between the layers. We predict that, in the presence of correlated density inhomogeneities in the layers, vertical energy transfer has a strong impact on lateral charge transport. In particular, for Coulomb drag it dominates over the conventional momentum drag near zero doping. The dependence on doping and temperature, which is different for the two drag mechanisms, can be used to separate these mechanisms in experiment. We predict distinct features such as a peak at zero doping and a multiple sign reversal, which provide diagnostics for this new drag mechanism.Comment: 6 pgs, 3 fg

    Chiral plasmons without magnetic field

    Plasmons, the collective oscillations of interacting electrons, possess emergent properties that dramatically alter the optical response of metals. We predict the existence of a new class of plasmons -- chiral Berry plasmons (CBPs) -- for a wide range of two-dimensional metallic systems including gapped Dirac materials. As we show, in these materials the interplay between Berry curvature and electron-electron interactions yields chiral plasmonic modes at zero magnetic field. The CBP modes are confined to system boundaries, even in the absence of topological edge states, with chirality manifested in split energy dispersions for oppositely directed plasmon waves. We unveil a rich CBP phenomenology and propose setups for realizing them, including in anomalous Hall metals and optically-pumped 2D Dirac materials. Realization of CBPs will offer a new paradigm for magnetic field-free, sub-wavelength optical non-reciprocity, in the mid IR-THz range, with tunable splittings as large as tens of THz, as well as sensitive all-optical diagnostics of topological bands.Comment: 10 pgs, 3 fg

    Education, Job Search and Re-employment Outcomes among the Unemployed

    This study assesses the effects of education on both job search intensity and re-employment success for unemployed workers. Given that the positive correlation between education and job search intensity or re-employment success is likely to be confounded by the endogeneity of education, we make use of data on compulsory schooling laws to create instrumental variables to assess the causal effects of education. Based on data from the Labour Force Survey and the Canadian Census, we find that education both significantly increases job search intensity and significantly improves re-employment success for the unemployed. The evidence on job search intensity provides insights into one potential mechanism through which education may increase the probability of re-employment following unemployment.education, adaptability, unemployment, job search, causal effects, compulsory schooling laws
