Subjective Well-Being, Income, Economic Development and Growth

We explore the relationships between subjective well-being and income, as seen across individuals within a given country, between countries in a given year, and as a country grows through time. We show that richer individuals in a given country are more satisfied with their lives than are poorer individuals, and establish that this relationship is similar in most countries around the world. Turning to the relationship between countries, we show that average life satisfaction is higher in countries with greater GDP per capita. The magnitude of the satisfaction-income gradient is roughly the same whether we compare individuals or countries, suggesting that absolute income plays an important role in influencing well-being. Finally, studying changes in satisfaction over time, we find that as countries experience economic growth, their citizens’ life satisfaction typically grows, and that those countries experiencing more rapid economic growth also tend to experience more rapid growth in life satisfaction. These results together suggest that measured subjective well-being grows hand in hand with material living standards.subjective well-being, life satisfaction, quality of life, economic growth, development, Easterlin Paradox, well-being-income gradient, hedonic treadmill

Community Foundations: Symposium On a Global Movement: Current Issues For the Global Community Foundation Movement

    Get PDF
This report documents some of the key elements of "Community Foundations: Symposium on a Global Movement", the first global meeting for people involved in community foundations. The sessions dealt with the changing world in which community foundations operate; the role foundations play globally, and roles for community foundations. Additional resources are included

Health Expenditure Risk and Annuitization: Evidence from Medigap Coverage

    Get PDF
Theoretical research suggests that health expenditure risk can have an ambiguous influence on the annuitization decisions of the elderly. I provide empirical evidence on this linkage, by estimating the impact of supplemental Medicare insurance (Medigap) coverage on the annuity demand of older Americans. I use local variation in prices as an instrumental variable to address the possible endogeneity of Medigap coverage, an identification strategy motivated by the fact that Medigap policies are not medically underwritten, and Medigap insurance is required by law to be standardized, so prices reflect neither individual characteristics nor product quality. Medigap coverage has a strong impact on annuitization: the extensive margin elasticity is 0.39, the overall elasticity of private annuity income with respect to Medigap coverage is 0.56. These results are robust to controls for health, wealth, and preferences, as well as other robustness tests. They imply that medical expenditure risk has a large impact on underannuitization

Constraints on the Quasiparticle Density of States in High-TcT_c Superconductors

In this Letter we present new tunneling data on YBa2_2Cu3_3O7_7 thin films by low temperature scanning tunneling spectroscopy. Unusual peak-dip-hump features, previously reported in Bi2_2Sr2_2CaCu2_2O8+ÎŽ_{8+\delta}, are also found in YBa2_2Cu3_3O7_7. To analyse these common signatures we propose a new heuristic model in which, in addition to the d-wave symmetry, the gap function is energy dependent. A simple expression for the quasiparticle density of states is derived, giving an excellent agreement with the experiment. The dynamics of the quasiparticle states and the energy scales involved in the superconducting transition are discussed.Comment: 4 page Letter with 3 figure

Local tunneling spectroscopy of the electron-doped cuprate Sm1.85Ce0.15CuO4

We present local tunneling spectroscopy in the optimally electron-doped cuprate Sm2-xCexCuO4 x=0.15. A clear signature of the superconducting gap is observed with an amplitude ranging from place to place and from sample to sample (Delta~3.5-6meV). Another spectroscopic feature is simultaneously observed at high energy above \pm 50meV. Its energy scale and temperature evolution is found to be compatible with previous photoemission and optical experiments. If interpreted as the signature of antiferromagnetic order in the samples, these results could suggest the coexistence on the local scale of antiferromagnetism and superconductivity on the electron-doped side of cuprate superconductors
