    Control of secondary flow structures on a highly loaded compressor cascade

The synthetic jets are mounted on the cascade sidewall and the suction side surface of the blade to reduce the total pressure loss caused by strong secondary flow structures developing in the passage. There are certain articles reporting that synthetic jets are well suited for flow control applications even in axial compressors and cascades. Most of them are focused on the parameter variation to optimize the efficiency of the control approach, still very little is known on the interaction of the synthetic jet actuators with the flow field. Detailed x-wire and pressure measurements were conducted to understand how synthetic jets influence the flow field and what causes the significant loss reduction in the cascade wake. It seems that the added momentum is not the key parameter for flow control with synthetic jets. In fact, the high mixing and the unsteadiness of the jets seem to amplify existing velocity fluctuations in the flow field. These increased fluctuations result in a shift of the shear layer between the flow separation and the surrounding flow, and thus in a dethrottling of the compressor cascade. Together with the increased mixing, loss reductions of approximately 10% can be reached using synthetic jet actuators

    Preconditioning of low-frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation with transcranial direct current stimulation: evidence for homeostatic plasticity in the human motor cortex

    Recent experimental work in animals has emphasized the importance of homeostatic plasticity as a means of stabilizing the properties of neuronal circuits. Here, we report a phenomenon that indicates a homeostatic pattern of cortical plasticity in healthy human subjects. The experiments combined two techniques that can produce long-term effects on the excitability of corticospinal output neurons: transcranial direct current stimulation (TDCS) and repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) of the left primary motor cortex. "Facilitatory preconditioning" with anodal TDCS caused a subsequent period of 1 Hz rTMS to reduce corticospinal excitability to below baseline levels for >20 min. Conversely, "inhibitory preconditioning" with cathodal TDCS resulted in 1 Hz rTMS increasing corticospinal excitability for at least 20 min. No changes in excitability occurred when 1 Hz rTMS was preceded by sham TDCS. Thus, changing the initial state of the motor cortex by a period of DC polarization reversed the conditioning effects of 1 Hz rTMS. These preconditioning effects of TDCS suggest the existence of a homeostatic mechanism in the human motor cortex that stabilizes corticospinal excitability within a physiologically useful range

    A wall shear stress measurement technique using the thermal wakes of small heated spots

The technique exploits that the surface temperature field and the near wall flow are closely linked by correlating the thermal wakes of small heated spots with the wall shear stress. Numerical as well as experimental results are presented and different correlation and design parameters are examined. In contrast to recent works, where the thermal tuft length is used for a correlation with the wall shear stress, other parameters were found to be much better suited for a skin friction calibration. It is also shown that the new method has the unique capability to not only measure the magnitude of the wall shear stress but also its direction

    Which factors influence the psychological distress among relatives of patients with chronic functional psychoses? An exploratory study in a community mental health care setting

    Aim: This research aimed to assess the contribution of the five core areas of the transactional stress model to the relatives' psychological distress (PD) when informally taking care of patients with functional psychoses treated in community mental health care. Subjects and methods: Cross-sectional data from 163 relatives were collected in interviews, while data on 158 patients were collected by analyzing clinical charts. The following areas were assessed: socio-demographic and illness-related features of the patients, socio-demographic features of the relatives (environmental variables); sense of coherence, mastery, causal attributions and opinions of relatives about mental disorders (person variables); interpersonal problems with the patients as well as the assessment of their symptoms by the relatives themselves (primary appraisal); support received, critical life events and burden of relatives caused by their own illnesses (secondary appraisal); control behavior and efforts of relatives to engage the patients in activities (coping). PD was assessed with the 12-item version of the General Health Questionnaire. Bi-variate correlation analysis and a multiple linear regression model were the main test statistical approaches. Results: Correlation analysis showed that differences between diagnostic groups referred to primary and secondary appraisal processes, in particular. Results of the statistical model provided evidence for the importance of primary appraisal and person variables for influencing PD, and for the lack of importance of coping and environmental variables. Conclusion: The study enhanced the validity of the transactional stress model to demonstrate the influence of salutogenetic concepts such as sense of coherence

    Active flow control by means of synthetic jets on a highly loaded compressor cascade

Experimental investigations on a large-scale compressor cascade equipped with 30 synthetic jet actuators mounted to the sidewalls and the blades themselves have been carried out. Results for a variation of the inflow angle, the jet amplitude, and the actuation frequency are presented. The wake measurements show total pressure loss reductions of nearly 10 per cent for the synthetic jet actuation. An efficiency calculation reveals that the energy saved by actuation is nearly twice the energy consumption of the synthetic jets

Steady and pulsed blowing has been used to control the secondary flow and separation characteristics of a highly loaded controlled diffusion airfoil. Investigations were performed at the design incidence for blowing ratios from approximately 0.7 to 3.0 (jet-to-inlet velocity) and a Reynolds number of 840 000 (based on axial chord and inlet velocity). Detailed flow field data were collected using a five-hole pressure probe, pressure taps on the blade surfaces, and time-resolved Particle Image Velocimetry. Unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes simulations were performed for a wide range of flow control parameters. The experimental and numerical results are used to understand the interaction between the jet and the passage flow. The benefit of the flow control on the cascade performance is weighted against the costs of the actuation by introducing an efficiency which takes the presence of the jets into account.DFG, SFB 557, Beeinflussung komplexer turbulenter Scherströmunge

    Effects of Frontal Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation on Emotional State and Processing in Healthy Humans

    The prefrontal cortex is involved in mood and emotional processing. In patients suffering from depression, the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) is hypoactive, while activity of the right DLPFC is enhanced. Counterbalancing these pathological excitability alterations by repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) or transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) improves mood in these patients. In healthy subjects, however, rTMS of the same areas has no major effect, and the effects of tDCS are mixed. We aimed to evaluate the effects of prefrontal tDCS on emotion and emotion-related cognitive processing in healthy humans. In a first study, we administered excitability-enhancing anodal, excitability-diminishing cathodal, and placebo tDCS to the left DLPFC, combined with antagonistic stimulation of the right frontopolar cortex, and tested acute emotional changes by an adjective checklist. Subjective emotions were not influenced by tDCS. Emotional face identification, however, which was explored in a second experiment, was subtly improved by a tDCS-driven excitability modulation of the prefrontal cortex, markedly by anodal tDCS of the left DLPFC for positive emotional content. We conclude that tDCS of the prefrontal cortex improves emotion processing in healthy subjects, but does not influence subjective emotional state

    Extensions of adaptive slope-seeking for active flow control

In a first approach, the gradient estimation is based on a locally identified black-box model. A further improvement is obtained by applying an extended Kalman filter to estimate the local gradient of an input—output map. Moreover, a simple method is outlined to adapt the search radius in the classical extremum- and slope-seeking approach to reduce the perturbations near the optimal state.
