Methods for applying Activity Theory to HCI Design
Activity Theory (AT) has been a recognised framework for enhancing design practices in HCI and
related disciplines for a couple of decades. In most cases, AT has been deployed as an analytical framework for
conceptualising user and contextual perspectives during systems design. However, the popularity of this
framework has not yet resulted in operational methods and techniques that can easily and readily be applied in
HCI design. The purpose of this workshop is to examine current methods and techniques based on AT so as to
establish the feasibility of using this framework in HCI for practical design purposes. Given this remit, the term
‘HCI design’ is used in a much broader sense so as to incorporate the whole range of activities involved in the
systems development process
First COVID-19 Case in Zambia - Comparative phylogenomic analyses of SARS-CoV-2 detected in African countries
Since its first discovery in December 2019 in Wuhan, China, COVID-19, caused by the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, has spread rapidly worldwide. Whilst African countries were relatively spared initially, the initial low incidence of COVID-19 cases was not sustained for long due to continuing travel links between China, Europe and Africa.. In preparation, Zambia had applied a multisectoral national epidemic disease surveillance and response system resulting in the identification of the first case within 48 hours of the individual entering the country by air travel from a trip to France. Contact tracing showed that SARS-CoV-2 infection was contained within the patient's household, with no further spread to attending health care workers or community members. Phylogenomic analysis of the patient's SARS-CoV-2 strain showed it belonged to lineage B.1.1., sharing the last common ancestor with SARS-CoV-2 strains recovered from South Africa. At the African continental level, our analysis showed that lineage B.1 and B.1.1 lineages appear to be predominant in Africa. Whole genome sequence analysis should be part of all surveillance and case detection activities in order to monitor the origin and evolution of SARS-CoV-2 lineages across Africa
Stress and its influence on reproduction in pigs: a review
The manifestations of stress, defined as a biological response to an event that the individual perceives as a threat to its homeostasis, are commonly linked to enhanced activity of the hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and the activation of the sympathetic adreno-medullary (SA) system. Activation of the HPA system results in the secretion of peptides from the hypothalamus, principally corticotropin releasing hormone (CRH), which stimulates the release of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) and beta-endorphin. ACTH induces the secretion of corticosteroids from the adrenal cortex, which can be seen in pigs exposed to acute physical and/or psychological stressors. The present paper is a review of studies on the influence of stressors on reproduction in pigs. The effects of stress on reproduction depend on the critical timing of stress, the genetic predisposition to stress, and the type of stress. The effect of stress on reproduction is also influenced by the duration of the responses induced by various stressors. Prolonged or chronic stress usually results in inhibition of reproduction, while the effects of transient or acute stress in certain cases is stimulatory (e.g. anoestrus), but in most cases is of impairment for reproduction. Most sensitive of the reproductive process are ovulation, expression of sexual behaviour and implantation of the embryo, since they are directly controlled by the neuroendocrine system
Incident type 2 diabetes attributable to suboptimal diet in 184 countries
The global burden of diet-attributable type 2 diabetes (T2D) is not well established. This risk assessment model estimated T2D incidence among adults attributable to direct and body weight-mediated effects of 11 dietary factors in 184 countries in 1990 and 2018. In 2018, suboptimal intake of these dietary factors was estimated to be attributable to 14.1 million (95% uncertainty interval (UI), 13.814.4 million) incident T2D cases, representing 70.3% (68.871.8%) of new cases globally. Largest T2D burdens were attributable to insufficient whole-grain intake (26.1% (25.027.1%)), excess refined rice and wheat intake (24.6% (22.327.2%)) and excess processed meat intake (20.3% (18.323.5%)). Across regions, highest proportional burdens were in central and eastern Europe and central Asia (85.6% (83.487.7%)) and Latin America and the Caribbean (81.8% (80.183.4%)); and lowest proportional burdens were in South Asia (55.4% (52.160.7%)). Proportions of diet-attributable T2D were generally larger in men than in women and were inversely correlated with age. Diet-attributable T2D was generally larger among urban versus rural residents and higher versus lower educated individuals, except in high-income countries, central and eastern Europe and central Asia, where burdens were larger in rural residents and in lower educated individuals. Compared with 1990, global diet-attributable T2D increased by 2.6 absolute percentage points (8.6 million more cases) in 2018, with variation in these trends by world region and dietary factor. Children's and adolescents' rising animal-source food intakes in 1990-2018 were impacted by age, region, parental education and urbanicity
Animal-source foods (ASF) provide nutrition for children and adolescents physical and cognitive development. Here, we use data from the Global Dietary Database and Bayesian hierarchical models to quantify global, regional and national ASF intakes between 1990 and 2018 by age group across 185 countries, representing 93% of the worlds child population. Mean ASF intake was 1.9 servings per day, representing 16% of children consuming at least three daily servings. Intake was similar between boys and girls, but higher among urban children with educated parents. Consumption varied by age from 0.6 at <1 year to 2.5 servings per day at 1519 years. Between 1990 and 2018, mean ASF intake increased by 0.5 servings per week, with increases in all regions except sub-Saharan Africa. In 2018, total ASF consumption was highest in Russia, Brazil, Mexico and Turkey, and lowest in Uganda, India, Kenya and Bangladesh. These findings can inform policy to address malnutrition through targeted ASF consumption programmes. (c) 2023, The Author(s)
Micronutrient Fortification to Improve Growth and Health of Maternally HIV-Unexposed and Exposed Zambian Infants: A Randomised Controlled Trial
Background: The period of complementary feeding, starting around 6 months of age, is a time of high risk for growth faltering and morbidity. Low micronutrient density of locally available foods is a common problem in low income countries. Children of HIV-infected women are especially vulnerable. Although antiretroviral prophylaxis can reduce breast milk HIV transmission in early infancy, there are no clear feeding guidelines for after 6 months. There is a need for acceptable, feasible, affordable, sustainable and safe (AFASS by WHO terminology) foods for both HIV-exposed and unexposed children after 6 months of age.Methods and Findings: We conducted in Lusaka, Zambia, a randomised double-blind trial of two locally made infant foods: porridges made of flour composed of maize, beans, bambaranuts and groundnuts. One flour contained a basal and the other a rich level of micronutrient fortification. Infants (n = 743) aged 6 months were randomised to receive either regime for 12 months. The primary outcome was stunting (length-for-age Z < -2) at age 18 months. No significant differences were seen between trial arms overall in proportion stunted at 18 months (adjusted odds ratio 0.87; 95% CI 0.50, 1.53; P = 0.63), mean length-for-age Z score, or rate of hospital referral or death. Among children of HIV-infected mothers who breastfed <6 months (53% of HIV-infected mothers), the richly-fortified porridge increased length-for-age and reduced stunting (adjusted odds ratio 0.17; 95% CI 0.04, 0.84; P = 0.03). Rich fortification improved iron status at 18 months as measured by hemoglobin, ferritin and serum transferrin receptors.Conclusions: In the whole study population, the rich micronutrient fortification did not reduce stunting or hospital referral but did improve iron status and reduce anemia. Importantly, in the infants of HIV-infected mothers who stopped breastfeeding before 6 months, the rich fortification improved linear growth. Provision of such fortified foods may benefit health of these high risk infants
Energy Management System for Solar And Grid System
Electricity is an important resource both in domestic and industrial environment. The rise in electricity demand has led to conventional resources being exhausted and possibly lead to rise in electricity prices. since conventional resources are being exhausted, there is need to search for alternative energy sources to supplement the conventional sources. Use of green energy as an alternative to generation of electricity from conventional sources is currently on the rise. This study aims to design and implement an Energy Management System (EMS) in a grid-tied solar Photovoltaic (PV) system. The aim of this EMS is to reduce the grid electricity need to an ordinary consumer in Kenya and create dependency on renewable energy sources. One of the major expenses of the ordinary consumer in Kenya is the cost of electricity. Murang'a University of Technology was chosen as the case study. Arduino Uno chosen to switch between the micro sources and the utility grid with the micro sources given priority over the utility grid. With sufficient solar irradiation, the solar PV supplies the load power provided the load demand is met, the excess charges the battery through charge controller. With a drop in irradiance, the battery storage system supplies the load provided the load demand is met. The grid supplies the load when the battery power drops below the load demand. With the drop in supply current drawn from the micro sources below specified thresh hold value, the load with the highest current rating was disconnected first and immediately reconnected to the utility grid
Comparison of four culture systems for Mycobacterium tuberculosis in the Zambian National Reference Laboratory.
SETTING: National TB Reference Laboratory, Zambia. OBJECTIVE: To compare four TB culture systems when used in a resource-limited setting. DESIGN: Comparison of four culture systems: automated Mycobacterium Growth Indicator Tube (AMGIT) 960, manual MGIT (MMGIT) and two Löwenstein-Jensen (LJ) culture media-commercial (CLJ) and homemade (HLJ). RESULTS: A total of 1916 sputum specimens were received, of which 261 (13.6%) were positive on microscopy. Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTC) was isolated on at least one of the media in 410 (21.4%) specimens: MMGIT recovered 336 (17.5%) MTC, AMGIT 329 (17.2%), CLJ 192 (10.0%) and HLJ 184 (9.6%). The median time to detection for smear-negative specimens was 14 days for AMGIT, 16 days for MMGIT and 34 days for both LJ. Isolation of non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) was more frequent in both MGIT systems (3.5%) than in CLJ (0.9%) and HLJ (0.8%). Contamination rates were high: 29.6% on AMGIT, 23.8% on MMGIT, 14.9% on CLJ and 12.5% on HLJ. CONCLUSION: Despite high contamination rates, either MGIT system considerably improved both the yield and the time to detection of MTC compared to LJ media. Investments in infrastructure and training are needed if culture is to be scaled up in low-income settings such as this
