Relativistic spin networks and quantum gravity
Relativistic spin networks are defined by considering the spin covering of
the group SO(4), SU(2) times SU(2). Relativistic quantum spins are related to
the geometry of the 2-dimensional faces of a 4-simplex. This extends the idea
of Ponzano and Regge that SU(2) spins are related to the geometry of the edges
of a 3-simplex.
This leads us to suggest that there may be a 4-dimensional state sum model
for quantum gravity based on relativistic spin networks which parallels the
construction of 3-dimensional quantum gravity from ordinary spin networks.Comment: 10 pages, amstex, some errors corrected, more reference
Extending Linear Response: Inferences from Electron-Ion Structure Factors
Linear response methods applied to electron systems often display a level of
accuracy which is notable when viewed in terms of the strengths of perturbing
interactions. Neglect of higher response terms is in fact justifiable in many
cases and it can be shown to stem from an intrinsic interference between atomic
and electronic length scales. For fluid metallic systems it can be further
shown that electron-ion structure (increasingly accessible experimentally) can
be understood from an application of linear response in the electron system,
combined with hard-sphere like correlation for the ionic component.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figure

Wheat Stem Maggot in Spring Wheat-Alfalfa Intercrops With Different Crop Management Intensities
Larval infestations and adult counts of wheat stem maggot (Meormyza americana) were each compared among plots of intercropped spring wheat and alfalfa grown under high, intermediate, or low crop management intensity (CMI). CMI varied primarily in the amounts of nitrogen fertilizer, herbicide, and tillage used. Infestation of wheat plants was measured from 1990 through 1993 as the percentage of white grain heads caused by larval feeding within the stems. Adult counts were made from sweep net samples within plots 3 to 5 times per year from 1991 through 1993. Larval infestation varied among years but not by CMI. The mean percentages of white heads in 1991 (2.0%) was greater than in other years (each :s; 1.3%). Counts of adult M. americana differed among sampling dates within years but not by CML The number of adults collected was bimodal, peaking on the first and last sampling dates each year. The interpretation of our results is discussed in the context of cropping systems research
Less than perfect quantum wavefunctions in momentum-space: How phi(p) senses disturbances in the force
We develop a systematic approach to determine the large |p| behavior of the
momentum-space wavefunction, phi(p), of a one-dimensional quantum system for
wich the position-space wavefunction, psi(x), has a discontinuous derivative at
any order. We find that if the k-th derivative of the potential energy function
has a discontinuity, there is a corresponding discontinuity in psi^{(k+2)}(x)
at the same point. This discontinuity leads directly to a power-law tail in the
momentum-space wavefunction proportional to 1/p^{k+3}. A number of familiar
pedagogical examples are examined in this context, leading to a general

Techniques for railway restructuring
This report was sponsored by the Union of African Railways, as part of a Sub-Saharan Africa Transport Project task aimed at defining what is involved in restructuring railways so that they behave more like market driven enterprises. The question addressed in this document is not whether the railway should be restructured, but how. The report recommends four types of action to be employed in the process of institutional reform : 1) a strategic plan which defines the environment in which the railway will function and focuses on the crucial policy issues that will guide or influence the railway's planning and actions, 2) a contract plan which defines the roles and responsibilities of the railway and its owner. This plan flows from the strategic plan and should not be developed in isolation from related policy and funding objectives of the government and railway. 3) A management plan that clarifies the objectives of the senior railway executives and their roles and responsibilities in relation to the executive director, and 4) an enabling actions plan, which lists most of the initiatives that must be taken in conjunction with implementation of the first three plans. Genetic Variation in Resistance of Scotch Pine to Zimmerman Pine Moth

Scotch pine (Pinus sylvestris L.), a forest tree introduced from Eurasia, is commonly planted for Christmas tree and timber use in northeastern United States. In this country it has numerous insect enemies. Among the most important are European pine shoot moth, Rhyacionia buoliana (Schiffermiieller); pine root collar weevil, Hylobius radicis Buchanan;,European pine sawfly, Neodiprion sertifer (Geoffroy); and eastern white-pine shoot borer, Eucosma gloriola Heinrich. Previous studies (Wright et al., 1967; Wright and Wilson, 1972; Steiner, 1974) have revealed large genetic differences in resistance to some of these pests.
Another destructive pest is the Zimmerman pine moth, Dioryctria zimmermani (Grote). In 1968 this insect, native to the United States, was found attacking trees in a Scotch pine provenance test in southwestern Michigan. The attack rate was heavy and by 1973 it was obvious that some rams or varieties were attacked more heavily than others. This is a report on those differences
Slice & Dice: Identifying and Removing Bright Galactic Binaries from LISA Data
Here we describe a hierarchal and iterative data analysis algorithm used for
searching, characterizing, and removing bright, monochromatic binaries from the
Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) data streams. The algorithm uses the
F-statistic to provide an initial solution for individual bright sources,
followed by an iterative least squares fitting for all the bright sources.
Using the above algorithm, referred to as Slice & Dice, we demonstrate the
removal of multiple, correlated galactic binaries from simulated LISA data.
Initial results indicate that Slice & Dice may be a useful tool for analyzing
