    Unconditional Pointer States from Conditional Master Equations

    When part of the environment responsible for decoherence is used to extract information about the decohering system, the preferred {\it pointer states} remain unchanged. This conclusion -- reached for a specific class of models -- is investigated in a general setting of conditional master equations using suitable generalizations of predictability sieve.     Complex Velocity Fields in the Shell of T Pyxidis

    We present spatially-resolved, moderate-resolution spectrophotometry of the recurrent nova T Pyx and a portion of the surrounding shell. The spectrum extracted from a strip of width 10'' centered on the star shows well-known, strong emission lines typical of old novae, plus a prominent, unfamiliar emission line at 6590 Angstroms. This line, and a weaker companion at 6540 Angstroms which we also detect, have been previously reported by Shahbaz et al., and attributed to Doppler-shifted H alpha emission from a collimated jet emerging from T Pyx. We demonstrate that these lines are instead due to [NII] 6548, 6584 from a complex velocity field in the surrounding nebula.     A methodology was demonstrated for assessing longitudinal-axis handling qualities of transport aircraft on the basis of closed-loop criteria. Six longitudinal-axis approach configurations were studied covering a range of handling quality problems that included the presence of flexible aircraft modes. Using closed-loop performance requirements derived from task analyses and pilot interviews, predictions of performance/workload tradeoffs were obtained using an analytical pilot/vehicle model. A subsequent manned simulation study yielded objective performance measures and Cooper-Harper pilot ratings that were largely consistent with each other and with analytic predictions

    Let MM be a compact 3-manifold with a triangulation τ\tau. We give an inequality relating the Euler characteristic of a surface FF normally embedded in MM with the number of normal quadrilaterals in FF. This gives a relation between a topological invariant of the surface and a quantity derived from its combinatorial description. Secondly, we obtain an inequality relating the number of normal triangles and normal quadrilaterals of FF, that depends on the maximum number of tetrahedrons that share a vertex in τ\tau.Comment: 7 pages, 1 figur

    Testing quantum adiabaticity with quench echo

    Adiabaticity of quantum evolution is important in many settings. One example is the adiabatic quantum computation. Nevertheless, up to now, there is no effective method to test the adiabaticity of the evolution when the eigenenergies of the driven Hamiltonian are not known. We propose a simple method to check adiabaticity of a quantum process for an arbitrary quantum system. We further propose a operational method for finding a uniformly adiabatic quench scheme based on Kibble-Zurek mechanism for the case when the initial and the final Hamiltonians are given.     We present the results of hydrodynamic (SPH) simulations showing the coalescence of a black hole with a neutron star to be a promising theoretical source of short duration gamma-ray bursts. The favorable features of the process include rapid onset, millisecond variability, a duration much longer than the dynamical timescale, and a range of outcomes sufficient to allow variety in the properties of individual gamma-ray bursts.
