Assessing the Viability of the ACT Natural Gas Distribution Network for Reuse as a Hydrogen Distribution Network
The Australian Capital Territory (ACT) has legislated and aims to be net zero emissions by 2045.
Therefore, we need to understand now the impacts on the gas distribution network of the transition to
100% hydrogen.
To assess the viability of decarbonising ACT gas networks based on the cost of reusing the ACT gas
network for the safe and reliable distribution of hydrogen requires each element of the natural gas safety
management system to be evaluated and where gaps in capability are identified, appropriate measures
taken to ensure ongoing validity of the safety case.
Evoenergy (the ACT’s gas distribution company) have constructed a Test Facility, incorporating an
electrolyser, a gas supply pressure reduction and mixing skid a replica gas network and a domestic
installation with gas appliances. Jointly with Australian National University (ANU) and Canberra
Institute of Technology (CIT) the Company has commenced a program of “bench testing”, initially with
100% hydrogen to identify gaps in the safety case specifically focusing on the materials, work practices
and safety systems in the ACT
Pituitary dysfunction and association with fatigue in stroke and other acute brain injury
Background: Poststroke fatigue (PSF) is a highly prevalent and debilitating condition. However, the etiology remains incompletely understood. Literature suggests the co-prevalence of pituitary dysfunction (PD) with stroke, and the question raises whether this could be a contributing factor to the development of PSF. This study reviews the prevalence of PD after stroke and other acquired brain injuries and its association with fatigue.
Summary: We performed a bibliographic literature search of MEDLINE and EMBASE databases for English language studies on PD in adult patients with stroke, traumatic brain injury (TBI) or aneurysmatic subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH). Forty-two articles were selected for review. Up to 82% of patients were found to have any degree of PD after stroke. Growth hormone deficiency was most commonly found. In aSAH and TBI, prevalences up to 49.3% were reported. However, data differed widely between studies, mostly due to methodological differences including the diagnostic methods used to define PD and the focus on the acute or chronic phase. Data on PD and outcome after stroke, aSAH and TBI are conflicting. No studies were found investigating the association between PD and PSF. Data on the association between PD and fatigue after aSAH and TBI were scarce and conflicting, and fatigue is rarely been investigated as a primary end point.
Key messages: Data according to the prevalence of PD after stroke and other acquired brain injury suggest a high prevalence of PD after these conditions. However, the clinical relevance and especially the association with fatigue need to be established
Crystallization and Preliminary Analysis of Crystals of the 24-Meric Hemocyanin of the Emperor Scorpion (Pandinus imperator)
Hemocyanins are giant oxygen transport proteins found in the hemolymph of several invertebrate phyla. They constitute giant multimeric molecules whose size range up to that of cell organelles such as ribosomes or even small viruses. Oxygen is reversibly bound by hemocyanins at binuclear copper centers. Subunit interactions within the multisubunit hemocyanin complex lead to diverse allosteric effects such as the highest cooperativity for oxygen binding found in nature. Crystal structures of a native hemocyanin oligomer larger than a hexameric substructure have not been published until now. We report for the first time growth and preliminary analysis of crystals of the 24-meric hemocyanin (MW = 1.8 MDa) of emperor scorpion (Pandinus imperator), which diffract to a resolution of 6.5 Å. The crystals are monoclinc with space group C 1 2 1 and cell dimensions a = 311.61 Å, b = 246.58 Å and c = 251.10 Å (α = 90.00°, β = 90.02°, γ = 90.00°). The asymmetric unit contains one molecule of the 24-meric hemocyanin and the solvent content of the crystals is 56%. A preliminary analysis of the hemocyanin structure reveals that emperor scorpion hemocyanin crystallizes in the same oxygenated conformation, which is also present in solution as previously shown by cryo-EM reconstruction and small angle x-ray scattering experiments
Coexpression of vesicular glutamate transporters 1 and 2, glutamic acid decarboxylase and calretinin in rat entorhinal cortex
We studied the distribution and coexpression of vesicular glutamate transporters (VGluT1, VGluT2), glutamic acid decarboxylase
(GAD) and calretinin (CR, calcium-binding protein) in rat entorhinal cortex, using immunofluorescence staining and multichannel
confocal laser scanning microscopy. Images were computer processed and subjected to automated 3D object recognition, colocalization
analysis and 3D reconstruction. Since the VGluTs (in contrast to CR and GAD) occurred in fibers and axon terminals only, we
focused our attention on these neuronal processes. An intense, punctate VGluT1-staining occurred everywhere in the entorhinal
cortex. Our computer program resolved these punctae as small 3D objects. Also VGluT2 showed a punctate immunostaining pattern,
yet with half the number of 3D objects per tissue volume compared with VGluT1, and with statistically significantly larger
3D objects. Both VGluTs were distributed homogeneously across cortical layers, with in MEA VGluT1 slightly more densely distributed
than in LEA. The distribution pattern and the size distribution of GAD 3D objects resembled that of VGluT2. CR-immunopositive
fibers were abundant in all cortical layers. In double-stained sections we noted ample colocalization of CR and VGluT2, whereas
coexpression of CR and VGluT1 was nearly absent. Also in triple-staining experiments (VGluT2, GAD and CR combined) we noted
coexpression of VGluT2 and CR and, in addition, frequent coexpression of GAD and CR. Modest colocalization occurred of VGluT2
and GAD, and incidental colocalization of all three markers. We conclude that the CR-containing axon terminals in the entorhinal
cortex belong to at least two subpopulations of CR-neurons: a glutamatergic excitatory and a GABAergic inhibitory
