A Riemannian View on Shape Optimization
Shape optimization based on the shape calculus is numerically mostly
performed by means of steepest descent methods. This paper provides a novel
framework to analyze shape-Newton optimization methods by exploiting a
Riemannian perspective. A Riemannian shape Hessian is defined yielding often
sought properties like symmetry and quadratic convergence for Newton
optimization methods.Comment: 15 pages, 1 figure, 1 table. Forschungsbericht / Universit\"at Trier,

Simultaneous solution approaches for large optimization problems
AbstractIn this paper, efficient simultaneous strategies are presented for the optimization of practical problems involving PDE-models. In particular, reduced sequential quadratic programming methods for problems with only few influence variables and simultaneous quadratic programming iterations are discussed. As a result we obtain algorithms whose overall computational complexity is reduced considerably in comparison to a black-box approach
Quantification of airfoil geometry-induced aerodynamic uncertainties - comparison of approaches
Uncertainty quantification in aerodynamic simulations calls for efficient
numerical methods since it is computationally expensive, especially for the
uncertainties caused by random geometry variations which involve a large number
of variables. This paper compares five methods, including quasi-Monte Carlo
quadrature, polynomial chaos with coefficients determined by sparse quadrature
and gradient-enhanced version of Kriging, radial basis functions and point
collocation polynomial chaos, in their efficiency in estimating statistics of
aerodynamic performance upon random perturbation to the airfoil geometry which
is parameterized by 9 independent Gaussian variables. The results show that
gradient-enhanced surrogate methods achieve better accuracy than direct
integration methods with the same computational cost
Interface Identification constrained by Local-to-Nonlocal Coupling
Models of physical phenomena that use nonlocal operators are better suited
for some applications than their classical counterparts that employ partial
differential operators. However, the numerical solution of these nonlocal
problems can be quite expensive. Therefore, Local-to-Nonlocal couplings have
emerged that combine partial differential operators with nonlocal operators. In
this work, we make use of an energy-based Local-to-Nonlocal coupling that
serves as a constraint for an interface identification problem.Comment: 27 pages, 5 figure
