    Analog black holes in flowing dielectrics

    We show that a flowing dielectric medium with a linear response to an external electric field can be used to generate an analog geometry that has many of the formal properties of a Schwarzschild black hole for light rays, in spite of birefringence.     Surface water sanitation and biomass production in a large constructed wetland in the Netherlands

    In Western-Europe, agricultural practices have contributed to environmental problems such as eutrophication of surface and ground water, flooding, drought and desiccation of surrounding natural habitats. Solutions that reduce the impact of these problems are urgently needed. Common reed (Phragmites australis) is capable of sanitizing surface water and may function as green energy source because of its high productivity. Here, the results of an experiment in a constructed wetland in the Netherlands are presented where two different sanitation treatments were compared. Depending on the residence time and volume per unit area, reed is capable to reduce the total amount of nitrogen in the water with average efficiencies from 32 to 47% and the total amount of phosphorous with 27–45%. Although biomass production still varies largely between different parts of the constructed wetland, a rapid increase in biomass was observed since planting. Constructed wetlands with reed provide opportunities to improve water quality and reed produces enough biomass to serve as green energy source. Moreover, these wetlands also function as a flood water reservoir and are possibly advantageous for biodiversity. The optimal moment of reed harvesting depends on the goal of the owner. This moment should be chosen wisely, as it may have consequences for reed filter regeneration, biomass production, biodiversity, methane emission and water sanitation efficiency

    Eén van de kenmerken van duurzaamheid, in de traditionele people, plant, profit indeling, is de mate waarin landbouw zich weet te verbinden aan de maatschappij. Deze studie focust zich op de ontwikkeling van een indicator die de mate van verbinding weergeeft. Omdat verbinding het resultaat is van een complexe sociale interactie die lastig meetbaar is, is er geen indicator beschikbaar die direct iets zegt over de mate van verbinding die een bedrijf of een sector weet te realiseren. Omdat er weinig informatie wordt vastgelegd over verbindingen die ondernemers aangaan in bestaande databases is ervoor gekozen om een indicator te ontwikkelen die direct door de ondernemer ingevuld kan worden. In deze studie is een eerste aanzet gedaan voor de ontwikkeling van deze duurzaamheidsindicator voor verbindingen

    "Cosmological" quasiparticle production in harmonically trapped superfluid gases

    We show that a variety of cosmologically motivated effective quasiparticle space-times can be produced in harmonically trapped superfluid Bose and Fermi gases. We study the analogue of cosmological particle production in these effective space-times, induced by trapping potentials and coupling constants possessing an arbitrary time dependence. The WKB probabilities for phonon creation from the superfluid vacuum are calculated, and an experimental procedure to detect quasiparticle production by measuring density-density correlation functions is proposed.Comment: 8 pages, 1 figure; references updated, as published in Physical Review

    Neural differentiation of the human neuroblastoma cell line IMR32 induces production of a thyrotropin-releasing hormone-like peptide

    The human neuroblastoma cell line IMR32 produces and secretes substantial amounts of TRH-immunoreactivity (TRH-IR) as measured with radioimmunoassay (RIA) using the nonspecific antiserum 4319. It was found that synthesis of TRH-IR is dependent on neural differentiation: under serum-free conditions these cells exhibit neural characteristics as defined by morphological and biochemical standards. After culture for 2–5 days in serum-free medium cells grew large neural processes and expressed neuron-specific markers whereas glial-specific markers were absent. TRH-IR became detectable after 4–8 days serum-free conditions. Northern blot and chromatographic analysis, however, failed to detect proTRH mRNA and authentic TRH in these cells. Moreover, TRH-IR was undetectable in the RIA using TRH-specific antiserum 8880. TRH-IR produced by differentiated cells was retained on a QAE Sephadex A-25 anion-exchange column and thus negatively charged. HPLC analysis showed coelution with the synthetic peptide pGlu-Glu-ProNH2. Study of the mechanisms regulating production of this novel peptide in these cells should further elucidate the role differentation plays in the synthesis of neuropeptides

    Non-Fermi-liquid behavior in Ce(Ru1x_{1-x}Fex_x)2_2Ge2_2: cause and effect

    We present inelastic neutron scattering measurements on the intermetallic compounds Ce(Ru1x_{1-x}Fex_x)2_2Ge2_2 (xx=0.65, 0.76 and 0.87). These compounds represent samples in a magnetically ordered phase, at a quantum critical point and in the heavy-fermion phase, respectively. We show that at high temperatures the three compositions have the identical response of a local moment system. However, at low temperatures the spin fluctuations in the critical composition are given by non-Fermi-liquid dynamics, while the spin fluctuations in the heavy fermion system show a simple exponential decay in time. In both compositions, the lifetime of the fluctuations is determined solely by the distance to the quantum critical point. We discuss the implications of these observations regarding the possible origins of non-Fermi-liquid behavior in this system.Comment: 4 figures, submitted to PR

    A computer model is presented that describes soleus H-reflex recruitment as a function of electric stimulus intensity. The model consists of two coupled non-linear transfer functions. The first transfer function describes the activation of muscle spindle (Ia) afferent terminals as a function of the electric stimulus intensity; whereas the second describes the activation of a number of motoneurons as a function of the number of active Ia afferent terminals. The effect of change in these transfer functions on the H-reflex recruitment curve is simulated. In spastic patients, a higher average maximal H-response amplitude is observed in combination with a decreased H-reflex threshold. Vibration of the Achilles tendon reduces the H-reflex amplitude, presumably by reducing the excitatory afferent input. Vibratory inhibition is diminished in spasticity. In the model, the afferent-motoneuron transfer function was modified to represent the possible alterations occurring in spasticity. The simulations show that vibratory suppression of the H-reflex is determined only in part by the inhibition level of the afferent input. With a constant level of presynaptic inhibition, the suppression of reflexes of different sizes may vary. A lowering of the motoneuron activation thresholds in spastic patients will directly contribute to a decrease of vibratory inhibition in spasticit

    Scharnhorst effect at oblique incidence

    We consider the Scharnhorst effect (anomalous photon propagation in the Casimir vacuum) at oblique incidence, calculating both photon speed and polarization states as functions of angle. The analysis is performed in the framework of nonlinear electrodynamics and we show that many features of the situation can be extracted solely on the basis of symmetry considerations. Although birefringence is common in nonlinear electrodynamics it is not universal; in particular we verify that the Casimir vacuum is not birefringent at any incidence angle. On the other hand, group velocity is typically not equal to phase velocity, though the distinction vanishes for special directions or if one is only working to second order in the fine structure constant. We obtain an ``effective metric'' that is subtly different from previous results. The disagreement is due to the way that ``polarization sums'' are implemented in the extant literature, and we demonstrate that a fully consistent polarization sum must be implemented via a bootstrap procedure using the effective metric one is attempting to define.     Acclimation to a dynamic irradiance regime changes excessive irradiance sensitivity of Emiliania huxleyi and Thalassiosira weissflogii

    Effects of fluctuating irradiance regimes on excessive photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) and ultraviolet (UV) radiation sensitivity were assessed for Emiliania huxleyi (Lohman) and Thalassiosira weissflogii (Grunow) Fryxell and Hasle. Cultures acclimated to low irradiance were subjected to two irradiance regimes of equal daily dose: dynamic irradiance simulating vertical mixing within the water column and constant irradiance. For each regime two irradiance levels were studied. Growth was monitored for 3 d, after which pigment composition was determined. Next, excessive PAR and UV sensitivity was measured by studying viability loss during 4-h exposure to simulated surface irradiance (SSI). Furthermore, the effects of inhibition of D1 reaction center protein turnover were investigated by incubating samples with lincomycin prior to exposure. Dynamic irradiance reduced growth rates of both species as compared to constant irradiance. Pools of light-harvesting pigments increased in dynamic irradiance, whereas the protective pigment pools decreased compared to constant irradiance. Excessive irradiance sensitivity was enhanced in cells grown in fluctuating irradiance. Furthermore, viability loss was most pronounced in UV treatments combined with lincomycin. E. huxleyi was more sensitive to excessive irradiance than T. weissflogii, which coincided with a lower ratio between protective and light-harvesting pigments in the former species.     Stikstofwerking van organische meststoffen op bouwland : resultaten van veldonderzoek in Wageningen in 2010/2011 : tussentijdse rapportage

    De stikstofwerking van organische meststoffen afkomstig uit mestverwerking is in 2010 vergeleken met de stikstofwerking van onbewerkte mesten. Daartoe is het effect van mineralenconcentraat (MC), varkensdrijfmest (VDM), rundveedrijfmest (RDM), dikke fractie van gescheiden varkensdrijfmest (DF), dikke fractie van het gescheiden digestaat van suikerbietenloof (SBDF), rundveestalmest (SM) en KAS-kunstmest (KM) op de opbrengst van snijmaïs bepaald. De gevonden stikstofwerkingen bedroegen voor MC 77% (forfaitair 100%), voor VDM 65% (forfaitair 70%), voor RDM 60% (forfaitair 60%), voor DF 64% (forfaitair 55%), voor SM 33% (forfaitair 55%) en voor SBDF 26% (forfaitair 40%). Vooral gevonden werkingen van MC, SM en SBDF blijven achter bij de wettelijke forfaits. De proef is er ook op gericht om het niet-werkzame deel van de stikstofgift nader te verklaren. Daartoe zijn waarnemingen na de oogst van de mais voortgezet. Alle organische mesten, inclusief MC, lieten per kg toegediende werkzame N minder onbenutte minerale bodem-N achter dan kunstmest-N. Deze bodem-N bleek een goede voorspeller van de hoeveelheid nitraat in het bovenste grondwater
