    Social Engineering Effects on Instructors and Students in an Elearning Environment

    The University of Illinois through the Illinois Online Network has been offering an 8-week fully online course titled, Online Learning: An Overview, as part of the award winning Making the Virtual Classroom a Reality (MVCR) program for nine years. This course was specifically designed as an interactive student-led discussion-centered elearning experience as is typical for the distance education field in the United States. However, analysis of the history of distance education as well as current global course offerings shows that less social means of distance education have been and still are viable educational alternatives to the traditional classroom. Furthermore, evaluations completed for this course as well as final program evaluations in MVCR show that a significant portion of students would prefer an independent-study model. This study questions the dominant U.S. distance education paradigm by analyzing the same course taught at the same time by the same instructor under two activity-different but content-equivalent instructional designs. Variables analyzed through experiential case study, content analysis, an instructor journal, and surveys include student satisfaction and self-perceived learning, instructor satisfaction, instructor time requirements, and depth or level of student demonstrated knowledge

    Data Curation Education in Research Centers Internship Evaluation

    One of the primary aspects of the Data Curation Education in Research Programs (DCERC) program is the incorporation of a data internships or field experiences into the educational program. The internship experiences will be evaluated and analyzed in three ways. First, an end-of-event survey was voluntary completed by the students and mentors. Second, anecdotal input by students and faculty will be integrated into the on-going case study. Third, the internship is being formally evaluated by an external evaluator through a focus group.     The Data Curation Research Summit consisted of four sessions, which followed opening contextual remarks provided by the organizers of both the DCRS and the previous Bloomsbury workshop. The first session was focused on current directions in research from the perspective of LIS faculty. The second session was devoted to approaches and challenges studying scientific data practices and needs. The third session covered current directions in research from the perspective of research libraries, and the final session returned to the original themes of the Bloomsbury conference with perspectives from the publishing community. This report provides a synopsis of the presentations as well as the broader group discussion of the summit. More specifically, this report highlights key emergent themes and concludes with recommendations for strategic research directions for advancing the state of knowledge and practice in the curation of research data.     In developing the Data Curation Education Program (DCEP) at the Graduate School of Library and Information Science at the University of Illinois at Urbana- Champaign, we have been engaged in a continuous, multi-faceted needs assessment of the range of data service needs for scientists and scholars across domains to inform curriculum development. The DCEP is training LIS professionals for employment across a range of information-oriented institutions, including data centers, libraries and institutional repositories, museums, archives, and private industry. As the data curation field matures, it is essential to assess required skill sets in relation to current jobs, as well as emerging or anticipated roles. This study uses current job postings as a source for analyzing the types of jobs emerging, the kinds of institutions looking for professionals with data curation skills, education requirements for current positions, and expectations for different categories of skill sets.published or submitted for publicatio
