Fabrication and Transport Properties of Manganite-Polyacrylamide-Based Composites

    No full text
We present the fabrication and transport properties of a series of composites made of La2/3Sr1/3MnO3 and acrylamide-based copolymers. The most important result is the very narrow transition, of only 27 K, displayed by the peak that appears around the metal-insulator transition of the composites made with poly(acrylamide-vinylacetate). Although the amount of polymer is rather low, different copolymers change drastically the electric transport characteristics

Calcified chronic subdural hematoma: Case report

The authors present a case of a female patient, 26 years old, who suffered a craniocerebral trauma 15 years ago, by falling from a different level. She manifested an intracranial hypertension syndrome and seizures at the moment of hospital admission. Brain CT scan reveals a large right fronto-parietal calcified subdural mass with left shift of median line. The lesion was isointense on T1 and hyperintense in T2 weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Calcified or atypical meningioma, bony tumor and subdural abscess were included in differential diagnosis. She underwent surgery and a calcified chronic subdural hematoma was completely excised, with good postoperative recovery. After two months of follow up, seizures were controlled with a minimal dose of medication, control CT scan showing absence of the hematoma and brain re-expansion. In summary, this uncommon calcified chronic subdural hematoma was successfully excised, resulting in a good recovery. From the literature review and the experience in this patient, authors consider surgical treatment for calcified chronic subdural hematoma as necessary and often results in neurological improvement, especially concerning seizures

Halotherapy—An Ancient Natural Ally in the Management of Asthma: A Comprehensive Review

    No full text
The increasing production of modern medication emerges as a new source of environmental pollution. The scientific community is interested in developing alternative, ecological therapies in asthma. Halotherapy proved its benefits in asthma diagnosis, treatment, and prevention and may represent a reliable therapeutic addition to the allopathic treatment, due to its ecological and environment-friendly nature, in order to prevent or prolong the time to exacerbations in patients with asthma. We aimed to review up-to-date research regarding halotherapy benefits in asthma comprehensively. We searched the electronic databases of PubMed, MEDLINE, EMBASE for studies that evaluated the exposure of asthmatic patients to halotherapy. Eighteen original articles on asthma were included. Five studies in adults and five in children assessed the performance of hypertonic saline bronchial challenges to diagnose asthma or vocal cord dysfunction in asthmatic patients. Three papers evaluated the beneficial effects of halotherapy on mucociliary clearance in asthmatic adults. The therapeutic effect of halotherapy on acute or chronic asthma was appraised in three studies in adults and one in children. The preventive role was documented in one paper reporting the ability of halotherapy to hinder nocturnal asthma exacerbations. All studies seem to sustain the overall positive effects of halotherapy as adjuvant therapy on asthma patients with no reported adverse events. Halotherapy is a crucial natural ally in asthma, but further evidence-based studies on larger populations are needed

Experimental Research on the Cutting of Metal Materials by Electrical Discharge Machining with Contact Breaking with Metal Band as Transfer Object

    No full text
The scientific paper presents practical research carried out by a mixed team of Romanian researchers from universities and the business environment. The research consists in applying the process of cutting metallic materials through electrical discharge machining with contact breaking using a metal band as a transfer object. The research was implemented with the help of a specially designed installation in the laboratory and subsequently all the necessary steps were taken to obtain the patent for it. Various metallic materials were cut using this process, but first of all, high alloy steels. In the global research conducted by the authors, active experimental programs and classic experimental programs were used. The composite central factorial experiment was the method that led to the most effective results in terms of interpretations and conclusions. The research as a whole includes unique elements from an engineering point of view and here we can highlight the use of a metal band as a transfer object for this type of process as well as the designed, realized, and subsequently patented installation

High magnetic shielding properties of an MgB2 cup obtained by machining a spark-plasma-sintered bulk cylinder

Superconductors are key materials for shielding quasi-static magneticfields. In this work, we investigated the shielding properties of an MgB2 cup-shaped shield with small aspect-ratio of height/outer radius. Shape and aspect-ratio were chosen in order to address practical requirements of both high shielding factors (SFs) and space-saving solutions. To obtain large critical current densities (Jc), which are crucial for achieving high magnetic-mitigation performance, a high-purity starting MgB2 powder was selected. Then, processing of the starting MgB2 powder into high density bulks was performed by spark plasma sintering. The as-obtained material is fullymachinable and was shaped into a cup-shield. Assessment of the material by scaling of the pinning force showed a non-trivial pinning behaviour. The MgB2 powder selection was decisive in enlarging the range of external fields where efficient shielding occurs. The shield’s properties were measured in both axial- and transverse-field configurations using Hall probes. Despite a height/outer radius aspect ratio of 2.2, shielding factors higher than 10^4 at T = 20 K up to a threshold field of 1.8 T were measured in axial-field geometry at a distance of 1 mm from the closed extremity of the cup, while SFs > 10^2 occurred in the inner half of the cup. As expected, this threshold field decreased with increased temperature, but SFs still exceeding the above mentioned values were found up to 0.35 T at 35 K. The shield’s shape limits the SF values achievable in transverse-field configuration. Nevertheless, the in-field Jc of the sample supported SFs over 40 at T = 20 K up to a field of 0.8 T, 1 mm away from the cup closure
