<p>Isolates with <i>spa</i> types that correspond to more than one epidemic type and require PFGE for PFGE epidemic type assignmenta, are rare or have not been previously observed in Albertab, are novel <i>spa</i> typesc, or could not be genotyped using PFGEd are shown. Isolates marked with an * were SCC<i>mec</i> typed with primers from Kondo <i>et al.</i> (18); all other isolates were SCC<i>mec</i> typed using primers from Oliveira <i>et al</i>. (17).</p

<p>PFGE epidemic types for MRSA isolates are assigned based on <i>spa</i>, SCC<i>mec</i>, and PVL data using the Alberta MRSA typing database. PFGE characterization is used for MRSA isolates that have rare or novel spa types, or have <i>spa</i>, SCC<i>mec</i>, and PVL combinations associated with more than a single PFGE epidemic type.</p
