    Correlation of status of thyroid antibodies and thyrotropin hormone with prevalence of thyroid autoimmune disease in pregnancy

    Background: Thyroid antibodies alterations were observed because of physiological and immunological changes occurring during pregnancy and after delivery. The aim was to evaluate serum anti-thyroid peroxidase antibodies (anti-TPO-Ab), anti-thyroglobulin antibodies (anti-TG-Ab) and total triiodothyronine (total T3), total thyroxine (total T4), thyrotropin hormone (TSH) levels in pregnant women of resident of Western India.Methods: Samples for 100 pregnant women with no apparent thyroid disorders were analyzed, using enzyme amplified chemiluminescent immune assay detection technology, in order to determine levels of total T3, total T4, TSH, anti-TPO-Ab and anti-TG-Ab in sera sample.Results: Of these women 24% gave biochemical evidence of hypothyroidism and remaining 76 % subjects were euthyroid in pregnant study group. In study group, 90% had normal values for anti-TPO-Ab and anti-TG-Ab and 10% had results revealing the presence of autoimmune diseases of the thyroid.Conclusions: n the present study, it was found that the level of anti-TG-Ab was found unaltered but it was found to be detected along with anti-TPO-Ab. These investigations should be performed routinely during pregnancy. Otherwise, lack of appropriate and early diagnosis and treatment can lead to neurological impairment of fetal brain as well as maternal cardiovascular diseases

    Study of oxidative stress and C-Reactive protein in type-2 diabetes mellitus

    Background: Diabetes mellitus is a group of metabolic diseases characterized by hyperglycemia resulting from defects in insulin secretion and insulin action or both. T2DM is associated with chronic low grade inflammation, possibly through a pathway involving a cytokine-mediated acute-phase response to infection and other inflammatory processes. authors aim to study C-reactive protein (CRP) which is an acute-phase reactant produced primarily in the liver hepatocytes. Oxidative stress levels in newly diagnosed T2M patients were analysed with respect to malondialdehyde (MDA) and nitric oxide (NO).Methods: Case-control study comprising of aged-sex matched subjects: newly diagnosed T2DM cases (n=30) and controls (n=30). The serum samples of subjects were analysed for levels of MDA by Buege and Aust method, while NO levels by Cortas and Wakid’s kinetic cadmium reduction method using spectrophotometer. CRP levels were analysed by using turbidimetry. Statistical analysis was done using Mini-tab 17 software with 95% confidence interval.Results: Serum levels of MDA, NO and CRP in newly diagnosed T2DM patients were significantly increased as compared to healthy controls.Conclusions:  Authors concluded that the oxidative stress and inflammation plays a pivotal role in the aetiology of hyperglycemia in T2DM. Oxidative stress and inflammatory markers might help prognosis of T2DM in hyperglycemic individuals with the help of which precautionary measure can be taken to reduce the rate of disease progression. Treatment involving anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory medications might help to rescue vital organs from damage

    Study of vitamins in pulmonary Tuberculosis

    Background: In recent years, progress in Tuberculosis (TB) control and eradication has been threatened by the emergence of drug resistant strains of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB). Several studies describe micronutrient malnutrition in TB. This study focuses on the effect of drug resistance and disease progression on levels of various vitamins.Methods: The case control study comprised of 50 normal healthy human volunteers (Control), 50 newly diagnosed TB patients (CAT I) and 50 TB patients showing multi drug resistance (MDR). Recruited subjects were of both genders in age group of 18- 60 years and from different socioeconomic status. Blood serum samples analysed for levels of Vitamin A, Vitamin D, Vitamin E, Vitamin C, Vitamin B12 and Folic acid by using Spectrophotometer, ELISA and Chemiluminescence instruments. Statistical evaluation was done for correlation among variables.Results: The levels of vitamins in TB patients were significantly reduced when compared with controls. Also, MDR-TB patients showed severe malnourished state in comparison to those who were newly diagnosed for the disease.Conclusions: There is a need to provide vitamin supplements in proper sufficient dosage with anti-TB drugs during treatment, which will help fight against the disease and ensure rapid recovery of the patients

We investigated the clinicopathological characteristics and prognostic indicators of lymph node-negative TN breast cancer. Medical records were reviewed from patients with node-negative breast cancer who underwent curative surgery at Grant Medical College and Sir JJ Group of Hospitals, Mumbai, India, from May 2007 to October 2010. Clinicopathological variables and clinical outcomes were evaluated. Among 683 patients included, 136 had TN breast cancer and 529 had non-TN breast cancer. TN breast cancer correlated with younger age (<35 years, P = 0.003) and a higher histopathologic and nuclear grade (P < 0.001). It also correlated with a molecular profile associated with biological aggressiveness: negative for Bcl-2 expression (P < 0.001), positive for the epidermal growth factor receptor (P = 0.003), and a high level of p53 (P < 0.001) and Ki-67 expression (P < 0.00). The relapse rates during the follow-up period (median 56.8 months) were 14.7% for TN breast cancer and 6.6% for non-TN breast cancer (P = 0.004). Relapse-free survival (RFS) was significantly shorter among patients with TN breast cancer compared with those with non-TN breast cancer: 3.5-year RFS rate 85.5% versus 94.2%, respectively; P = 0.001. On multivariate analysis, young age, close resection margin, and triple negativity were independent predictors of shorter RFS. TN breast cancer had a higher relapse rate and more aggressive clinicopathological characteristics than non-TN in node-negative breast cancer. Thus, TN breast cancer should be integrated into risk factor analysis for node-negative breast cancer.Keywords: TN breast cancer, hormone receptors, ER, PgR, HER-2/neu, Ki-6
