    On the development of the chondrocranium and the histological anatomy of the head in perinatal stages of marsupial mammals

    An overview of the literature on the chondrocranium of marsupial mammals reveals a relative conservatism in shape and structures. We document the histological cranial anatomy of individuals representing Monodelphis domestica, Dromiciops gliroides, Perameles sp. and Macropus eugenii. The marsupial chondrocranium is generally characterized by the great breadth of the lamina basalis, absence of pila metoptica and large otic capsules. Its most anterior portion (cupula nasi anterior) is robust, and anterior to it there are well-developed tactile sensory structures, functionally important in the neonate. Investigations of ossification centers at and around the nasal septum are needed to trace the presence of certain bones (e.g., mesethmoid, parasphenoid) across marsupial taxa. In many adult marsupials, the tympanic floor is formed by at least three bones: alisphenoid (alisphenoid tympanic process), ectotympanic and petrosal (rostral and caudal tympanic processes); the squamosal also contributes in some diprotodontians. The presence of an entotympanic in marsupials has not been convincingly demonstrated. The tubal element surrounding the auditory tube in most marsupials is fibrous connective tissue rather than cartilage; the latter is the case in most placentals recorded to date. However, we detected fibrocartilage in a late juvenile of Dromiciops, and a similar tissue has been reported for Tarsipes. Contradictory reports on the presence of the tegmen tympani can be found in the literature. We describe a small tegmen tympani in Macropus. Several heterochronic shifts in the timing of development of the chondocranium and associated structures (e.g., nerves, muscles) and in the ossification sequence have been interpreted as largely being influenced by functional requirements related to the altriciality of the newborn marsupial during early postnatal life. Comparative studies of chondocranial development of mammals can benefit from a solid phylogenetic framework, research on non-classical model organisms, and integration with imaging and sectional data derived from computer-tomography.Fil: Sánchez Villagra, Marcelo R..     Quantum Walks on the Line with Phase Parameters

    In this paper, a study on discrete-time coined quantum walks on the line is presented. Clear mathematical foundations are still lacking for this quantum walk model. As a step towards this objective, the following question is being addressed: {\it Given a graph, what is the probability that a quantum walk arrives at a given vertex after some number of steps?} This is a very natural question, and for random walks it can be answered by several different combinatorial arguments. For quantum walks this is a highly non-trivial task. Furthermore, this was only achieved before for one specific coin operator (Hadamard operator) for walks on the line. Even considering only walks on lines, generalizing these computations to a general SU(2) coin operator is a complex task. The main contribution is a closed-form formula for the amplitudes of the state of the walk (which includes the question above) for a general symmetric SU(2) operator for walks on the line. To this end, a coin operator with parameters that alters the phase of the state of the walk is defined. Then, closed-form solutions are computed by means of Fourier analysis and asymptotic approximation methods. We also present some basic properties of the walk which can be deducted using weak convergence theorems for quantum walks. In particular, the support of the induced probability distribution of the walk is calculated. Then, it is shown how changing the parameters in the coin operator affects the resulting probability distribution.Comment: In v2 a small typo was fixed.     A new Megatheriinae skull (Xenarthra, Tardigrada) from the pliocene of northern venezuela – Implications for a giant sloth dispersal to central and North America

    A skull of a ground sloth from the Pliocene San Gregorio Formation documents a northern neotropical occurrence of a megatheriine that addresses issues on intraspecific variation and biogeography. The new specimen is broadly similar in size and morphology to that of Proeremotherium eljebe from the underlying Codore Formation in the Urumaco Sequence, differing in several features such as a longer basicranial area and a more posteriorly projected basioccipital between the condyles. The living sloths species of Bradypus and Choloepus do not have unequivocal anatomical features that indicate sexual dimorphism. Nevertheless, fossil sloths may have shown such dimorphism, and speculations on this subject are part of the considerations that can be made when allocating fragmentary fossils (e.g., in the new skull the presence of a long sagittal crest could indicate a male individual and the absence of an extended crest in Proeremotherium eljebe a female one). We speculate that as early as the late middle Miocene, two main lines of Megatheriinae had clearly separated in two geographic areas, one in the rising Andean area and one at low latitudes on the lowlands of central and northern South America.Fil: Carlini, Alfredo Armando.     The territories of planning in the development plans of rural communities : Quillón – Chile

    En la elaboración de los Planes de Desarrollo Comunal en Chile (PLADECOS), resulta vital la incorporación de la dimensión territorial, específicamente la identificación de territorios de planificación intracomunales en unidades que ostentan un alto grado de ruralidad, que aporten a la imagen objetivo nuevos elementos de juicio, considerándolo como fundamento básico del desarrollo y del ordenamiento de dicho espacio de administración local. Todo estudio de una Comuna debiera implicar una propuesta del ordenamiento del territorio, orientando a la vez, una posibilidad de acción. De allí que se insista en la necesidad de conocer el territorio que habitamos para ordenarlo y usarlo racionalmente, siendo en esta acción donde el sentido aplicado de la Geografía se manifiesta con claridad, orientando a los planificadores y autoridades políticas en la planificación que, en el caso chileno estuvo ausente por muchas décadas. Se indican los fundamentos metodológicos para establecer los territorios de Planificación a nivel comunal y algunos resultados preliminares, tomando como ejemplo la Comuna de Quillón, en la VIII Región del país, provincia chilena de Ñuble. Para analizar el Territorio de cada comuna, en la complejidad de sus variables y sistemas se utilizará una adaptación de la metodología propuesta por Domingo Gómez Orea, en sus enfoques teóricos del Ordenamiento Territorial y de la Planificación rural, además de la metodología colombiana para elaborar los Planes en ese país. Se desarrollaron pasos y elementos como diagnóstico integral del territorio, evaluación del mismo, propuestas Territorios de Planificación y validación de las mismas por los actores sociales, para finalmente establecer los lineamientos estratégicos para los Territorios. Si se realizan acciones para superar la falta de integración de los sectores públicos y privados en el desarrollo comunal, Quillón se proyecta como una comuna de pequeña producción familiar campesina, asociada a un turismo rural que integre cultural, social y espacialmente la ciudad de Quillón con el resto del territorio comunal, asociando sus demandas con los diferentes territorios de planificación en conjunto.In the elaboration of Plans of Communal Development in Chile (PLADECOS), turns out to be vital the incorporation of the territorial dimension, specifically the identification of intra commune territories of planning in units that show a high degree of rurality, new facts that contribute to the image objectively, considering basic for the development the classification of the above mentioned space of local administration. Any study of a Commune must imply an offer of the classification of the territory, orientating simultaneously, a possibility of action. It is insisted on the need of knowing the territory that we inhabit to arrange it and to use it rationally, being in this action where the applied sense of the Geography is shown with clarity, orientating the planners and political authorities in the planning that, in the Chilean case it was absent for many decades. The methodological foundations are indicated to establish the territories of planning to communal level and some preliminary results, taking Quillón's Commune as an example, in the Region VIII of the country, Ñuble's chilean province. To analyze the Territory of every commune in the complexity of its variables and systems will be used an adjustment of the methodology proposed by Domingo Gómez Orea, in his theoretical approaches of the Territorial Classification and of the rural Planning, besides the Colombian methodology for elaborating the Plans in this country. The developed steps and elements were integral diagnosis and evaluation of the territory, offers for Territories of Planning and validation of the same ones with the social actors, to establish finally the strategic limits for the Territory. If actions are realized to overcome the lack of integration of public and prived sectors in the communal development, Quillón is projected as a rural commune of small family production, associated with a rural tourism that integrates culturally, socially and spatially Quillón's city with the rest of the communal territory, associating its demands with those of different planning territories as a whole.Fil: Rebolledo Villagra, Jaime.
