GOAL-DTU: Development of Distributed Intelligence for the Multi-Agent Programming Contest
We provide a brief description of the GOAL-DTU system for the agent contest,
including the overall strategy and how the system is designed to apply this
strategy. Our agents are implemented using the GOAL programming language. We
evaluate the performance of our agents for the contest, and finally also
discuss how to improve the system based on analysis of its strengths and

Pushing nanoparticles with light - A femtonewton resolved measurement of optical scattering forces
Optomechanical manipulation of plasmonic nanoparticles is an area of current interest, both fundamental and applied. However, no experimental method is available to determine the forward-directed scattering force that dominates for incident light of a wavelength close to the plasmon resonance. Here, we demonstrate how the scattering force acting on a single gold nanoparticle in solution can be measured. An optically trapped 80 nm particle was repetitively pushed from the side with laser light resonant to the particle plasmon frequency. A lock-in analysis of the particle movement provides a measured value for the scattering force. We obtain a resolution of less than 3 femtonewtons which is an order of magnitude smaller than any measurement of switchable forces performed on nanoparticles in solution with single beam optical tweezers to date. We compared the results of the force measurement with Mie simulations of the optical scattering force on a gold nanoparticle and found good agreement between experiment and theory within a few fN. Cool Stars and Space Weather
Stellar flares, winds and coronal mass ejections form the space weather. They
are signatures of the magnetic activity of cool stars and, since activity
varies with age, mass and rotation, the space weather that extra-solar planets
experience can be very different from the one encountered by the solar system
planets. How do stellar activity and magnetism influence the space weather of
exoplanets orbiting main-sequence stars? How do the environments surrounding
exoplanets differ from those around the planets in our own solar system? How
can the detailed knowledge acquired by the solar system community be applied in
exoplanetary systems? How does space weather affect habitability? These were
questions that were addressed in the splinter session "Cool stars and Space
Weather", that took place on 9 Jun 2014, during the Cool Stars 18 meeting. In

Radio Emission from the Exoplanetary System ε Eridani
As part of a wider search for radio emission from nearby systems known or suspected to contain extrasolar planets, ε Eridani was observed by the Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) in the 2–4 GHz and 4–8 GHz frequency bands. In addition, as part of a separate survey of thermal emission from solar-like stars, ε Eri was observed in the 8–12 GHz and the 12–18 GHz bands of the VLA. Quasi-steady continuum radio emission from ε Eri was detected in the three high-frequency bands at levels ranging from 67 to 83 μJy. No significant variability is seen in the quasi-steady emission. The emission in the 2–4 GHz emission, however, is shown to be the result of a circularly polarized (up to 50%) radio pulse or flare of a few minutes in duration that occurred at the beginning of the observation. We consider the astrometric position of the radio source in each frequency band relative to the expected position of the K2V star and the purported planet. The quasi-steady radio emission at frequencies ≥8 GHz is consistent with a stellar origin. The quality of the 4–8 GHz astrometry provides no meaningful constraint on the origin of the emission. The location of the 2–4 GHz radio pulse is >2.5σ from the star; however, based on the ephemeris of Benedict et al., it is not consistent with the expected location of the planet either. If the radio pulse has a planetary origin, then either the planetary ephemeris is incorrect or the emission originates from another planet
Comparison theory and smooth minimal C*-dynamics
We prove that the C*-algebra of a minimal diffeomorphism satisfies
Blackadar's Fundamental Comparability Property for positive elements. This
leads to the classification, in terms of K-theory and traces, of the
isomorphism classes of countably generated Hilbert modules over such algebras,
and to a similar classification for the closures of unitary orbits of
self-adjoint elements. We also obtain a structure theorem for the Cuntz
semigroup in this setting, and prove a conjecture of Blackadar and Handelman:
the lower semicontinuous dimension functions are weakly dense in the space of
all dimension functions. These results continue to hold in the broader setting
of unital simple ASH algebras with slow dimension growth and stable rank one.
Our main tool is a sharp bound on the radius of comparison of a recursive
subhomogeneous C*-algebra. This is also used to construct uncountably many
non-Morita-equivalent simple separable amenable C*-algebras with the same
K-theory and tracial state space, providing a C*-algebraic analogue of McDuff's
uncountable family of II_1 factors. We prove in passing that the range of the
radius of comparison is exhausted by simple C*-algebras.Comment: 30 pages, no figure
