National audienceThe presence of a disease of cryptogamic origin, at the same time very apparent and damageable to floral buttons of cultivated rhododendrons in parks and gardens situated in the neighbourhood of Versailles (La Celle-Saint-Cloud) and Rambouillet was the object of a study undertaken since 1979. The attacked shrubs were identified as being a hybrid of Rhododendron catawbiense Michx. or Rhododendron of Virginia. In the first locality, the destruction of Rhododendron floral buttons might have been established 4 or 5 years before, and since, each year, at the flowering time. A bibliographic research and examination of the symptoms allowed the identification of this disease as being the bud rot, also known under the names of Sporocybebud blast of Rhododendron, or bud blight of Azalea, or still leaf scorch ; the causal agent is a microscopic fungus of the family Stilbaceae : Pycnostysanus azaleae (Peck) Mason.
