The First Public Release of South Pole Telescope Data: Maps of a 95 deg^2 Field from 2008 Observations
The South Pole Telescope (SPT) has nearly completed a 2500 deg^2 survey of the southern sky in three frequency bands. Here, we present the first public release of SPT maps and associated data products. We present arcminute-resolution maps at 150 GHz and 220 GHz of an approximately 95 deg^2 field centered at R.A. 82°.7, decl. –55°. The field was observed to a depth of approximately 17 μK arcmin at 150 GHz and 41 μK arcmin at 220 GHz during the 2008 austral winter season. Two variations on map filtering and map projection are presented, one tailored for producing catalogs of galaxy clusters detected through their Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect signature and one tailored for producing catalogs of emissive sources. We describe the data processing pipeline, and we present instrument response functions, filter transfer functions, and map noise properties. All data products described in this paper are available for download at http://pole.uchicago.edu/public/data/maps/ra5h30dec-55 and from the NASA Legacy Archive for Microwave Background Data Analysis server. This is the first step in the eventual release of data from the full 2500 deg^2 SPT survey
A simple deterministic self-organized critical system
We introduce a new continuous cellular automaton that presents self-organized
criticality. It is one-dimensional, totally deterministic, without any kind of
embedded randomness, not even in the initial conditions. This system is in the
same universality class as the Oslo rice pile system, boundary driven interface
depinning and the train model for earthquakes. Although the system is chaotic,
in the thermodynamic limit chaos occurs only in a microscopic level.Comment: System slightly modified. New results on Liapunov exponents.

Chaos and Synchronized Chaos in an Earthquake Model
We show that chaos is present in the symmetric two-block Burridge-Knopoff
model for earthquakes. This is in contrast with previous numerical studies, but
in agreement with experimental results. In this system, we have found a rich
dynamical behavior with an unusual route to chaos. In the three-block system,
we see the appearance of synchronized chaos, showing that this concept can have
potential applications in the field of seismology.Comment: To appear in Physical Review Letters (13 pages, 6 figures
Point-contact spectroscopy on URuSi
Tunnel and point contact experiments have been made in a URuSi single
crystal along the c-axis. The experiments were performed changing temperature
and contact size in a low temperature scanning tunneling microscope. A
resonance develops at the Fermi level at K. This resonance splits
and becomes asymmetric when the 17.5 K phase transition is crossed. These
results are consistent with the existence of Kondo like bound states of the
U ionic configurations and the conduction electrons. Below the
transition, these configurations are split by the development of quadrupolar
ordering. The peak separation can be interpreted as a direct measurement of the
order parameter. Measurements on a policrystalline UAu_2Si_2$ sample are also
reported, with a comparative study of the behavior of both materials.Comment: 4 pages (Latex) + 2 postscript figure

A Certification Framework for Cloud Security Properties: The Monitoring Path
In this paper we describe the structure and functionality of a certification integrated framework aimed to support the certification of security properties of a Cloud infrastructure (IaaS), a platform (PaaS), or the software layer (SaaS). Such framework will bring service users, service providers and cloud suppliers to work together with certification authorities in order to ensure security properties and certificates validity in the continuously evolving cloud environment. For this purpose, the framework relies on multiple types of evidence gathering with respect to security, e.g., testing services, monitoring agents or trusted computing proofs. In this paper we will focus only on the monitoring case and will illustrate its use. Yet, this framework is designed to be able to follow models for hybrid, incremental and multi-layer security certification since cloud security has to build upon the entire cloud stack
Demonstration experiments for solid state physics using a table top mechanical Stirling refrigerator
Liquid free cryogenic devices are acquiring importance in basic science and
engineering. But they can also lead to improvements in teaching low temperature
an solid state physics to graduate students and specialists. Most of the
devices are relatively expensive, but small sized equipment is slowly becoming
available. Here, we have designed several simple experiments which can be
performed using a small Stirling refrigerator. We discuss the measurement of
the critical current and temperature of a bulk YBa2Cu3O(7-d) (YBCO) sample, the
observation of the levitation of a magnet over a YBCO disk when cooled below
the critical temperature and the observation of a phase transition using ac
calorimetry. The equipment can be easily handled by students, and also used to
teach the principles of liquid free cooling
