Path Integrals and Perturbation Theory for Stochastic Processes

We review and extend the formalism introduced by Peliti, that maps a Markov process to a path-integral representation. After developing the mapping, we apply it to some illustrative examples: the simple decay process, the birth-and-death process, and the Malthus-Verhulst process. In the first two cases we show how to obtain the exact probability generating function using the path integral. We show how to implement a diagrammatic perturbation theory for processes that do not admit an exact solution. Analysis of a set of coupled Malthus-Verhulst processes on a lattice leads, in the continuum limit, to a field theory for directed percolation and allied models.Comment: 33 pages, 6 figure

Functional form issues in the regression analysis of financial leverage ratios

Linear models are typically used in the regression analysis of capital structure choices. However, given the proportional and bounded nature of leverage ratios, models such as the tobit, the fractional regression model and its two-part variant are a better alternative. In this paper, we discuss the main econometric assumptions and features of those models, provide a theoretical foundation for their use in the regression analysis of leverage ratios and review some statistical tests suitable to assess their specification. Using a dataset previously considered in the literature, we carry out a comprehensive comparison of the alternative models, finding that in this framework the most relevant functional form issue is the choice between a single model for all capital structure decisions and a two-part model that explains separately the decisions to issue debt and, conditional on the first decision, on the amount of debt to issue.Capital structure; Zero leverage; Fractional regression model; Tobit; Twopart model.

The salience of the migration issue: Interview with Andrew Geddes

Andrew Geddes é professor de Estudos Migratórios e o diretor do Migration Policy Centre. Durante a sua carreira, liderou e participou numa série de grandes projetos sobre aspetos da migração internacional colaborando com parceiros académicos e não académicos. Durante o período de 2014-19, foi-lhe concedida uma Bolsa de Investigador Avançado pelo Conselho Europeu de Investigação para um projeto sobre os fatores impulsionadores da governação das migrações globais. Publicou vários textos sobre migração global, sobretudo sobre elaboração de políticas e políticas de migração e sobre cooperação e integração regionais.
