Symbolic dimensions of practices of exchange in marketplaces in Buenos Aires and Vienna

Este artículo explora dos mercados en dos continentes diferentes, el Mercado Solidario Bonpland en Buenos Aires (Argentina) y el Mercado de los agricultores del centro socio-cultural WUK en Viena (Austria), con el propósito de indagar en las dimensiones simbólicas de las prácticas de la vida cotidiana, que se desarrollan en estos mercados. La particularidad es que estos mercados fueron originados y sostenidos por grupos de activistas locales para promover y apoyar la participación y el intercambio social. Aunque estos dos mercados difieren en su apariencia, los significados y las ideas conceptuales detrás de cada uno, reflejan propuestas similares hacia la consolidación de prácticas culturales alternativas, lo que conduce a que los mercados se tornen como lugares de intercambio y encuentro social relevantes para la comunidad local. En el artículo se abordan las prácticas de intercambio halladas en los mercados como acciones estratégicas que permiten obtener un medio de vida y un espacio de pertenencia social. Los actores involucrados en la producción de los mercados analizados, muestran a la performatividad como una faceta esencial de la producción de significados simbólicos, con la capacidad de generar un espacio para el fomento y desarrollo de posibles prácticas emancipatorias.This paper explores two marketplaces on two different continents, the “Mercado Solidario Bonpland” in Buenos Aires (Argentina) and the farmers’ market of the socio-cultural centre wuk in Vienna (Austria), in order to gain insight into how symbolic dimensions of everyday life practices, which unfold in marketplaces, are interpreted and routinized by local culture (activist) groups. These two markets have been initiated and backed by local groups as a means of promoting participation and social exchange. Although they differ in appearance, meanings and conceptual ideas behind their production, they reflect similar endeavours towards emancipating alternative cultural practices and values, purposefully rendering marketplaces places of exchange and meeting relevant for the local community. The article addresses the “exchange practices” found in markets as strategic actions that allow obtaining a livelihood and a space of social belonging. Actors involved in the production of the analysed marketplaces acknowledged performativity as an essential facet of the production of symbolic meanings pertaining to marketplaces, with the capacity to create space for nurture and further growth of emancipatory practices.Fil: Viderman, Tihomir. Unsettled Urban Space: Routines, Temporalities and Contestations

While urban life can be characterized by endeavors to settle stable and safe environments, for many people, urban space is rarely stable or safe; it is uncertain, troubled, imbued with challenges and perpetually under pressure. As the concept of unsettled appears to define the contemporary urban experience, this multidisciplinary book investigates the conflicts and possibilities of settling and unsettling through open and speculative analysis. The analytical prism of unsettled renders urban space an indeterminate ground unfolding through routines, temporalities and contestations in constant tension between settling and unsettling. Such contrasting experiences are contingent on how urban societies confront, undergo and overcome turbulence and difficulties in time and space. Contributions drawing on theoretical reflections and empirical accounts—from Argentina, Austria, Germany, Greece, Italy, the Netherlands, the UAE, the UK, the USA and Vietnam—give insights into plural occurrences of the unsettled, which might tie down or unleash transformative, liberatory and emancipatory potentials. This book is for students, professionals and researchers interested in the uncertainties, foundations, disturbances, inconsistencies, residuals and blind fields, which constitute the urban both as lived space and as social, cultural and political ideal

Introduction: everyday struggles and contestations around care

While acknowledging that care creates social bonds and glues societies together, this chapter discusses the value of care and struggles to provide care that simultaneously reveal the alienated conditions in which they occur. The discussion contributes a spatial perspective on the crossovers of care and caring relations by casting a light on how care materializes in urban space. We argue that it is the struggle of distribution across the private-public boundary and its negotiation that makes care, as well as struggles and contestations over care, tangible. As capitalism cuts away at social relationships and reduces capacities to care, it also abstracts care as a commodified category, which it then materializes in urban space as a provision or service whose task is to simultaneously ensure the reproduction of society and consolidate asymmetries in power relations. In such an environment, we argue that affective caring relations matter all the more because they build agency and agency to contest

Remainders of urbanity

Die vorliegende Publikation präsentiert die Ergebnisse des Mastermoduls „Beteiligungsprozesse in der Stadt- und Regionalplanung“ aus dem Sommersemester 2020 am Fachgebiet Stadtmanagement der BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg. Das Mastermodul, das von Tihomir Viderman und Silke Weidner betreut wurde, besuchten 18 Masterstudierende der Stadtplanung. Als am Anfang des Semesters die Begegnungsräume und das öffentliche Leben durch COVID-19-Präventionsmaßnahmen massiv eingeschränkt wurden, stellte die neue Situation für Planer*innen und Architekt*innen eine einzigartige Gelegenheit dar: Wir konnten erforschen wie unser Alltag - ähnlich wie bei jedem anderen partizipativen Ansatz - durch eine Reihe von Grenzen, Regeln sowie unseren persönlichen Erfahrungen und Fähigkeiten geprägt ist und wie wir diesen entsprechend gestalten. Die Studierenden untersuchten Räume des öffentlichen Alltagslebens, die vorübergehend ihre Verwendung, ihren Zweck und damit ihre ursprüngliche Bedeutung verloren hatten. Ausgehend von diesen Einblicken entwickelten sie eine eigene Position zu ihren multisensorischen Wahrnehmungen von Unsicherheiten der Teilhabe am städtischen Leben unter den Covid-19-Rahmenbedingungen. Anhand der vielfältigen Erkenntnisse und persönlichen Reflexionen zur Urbanität im Zustand der neuen Normalität wurde ein gemeinsames Positionspapier zur Stadtentwicklung im Rahmen der COVID-19 Präventionsmaßnahmen und möglichen oder gewünschten Zukunftsaussichten verfasst. Die teilnehmenden Studierenden haben ein digitales partizipatives Verfahren konzipiert und durchgeführt, um sich über die einzelnen Ansichten auszutauschen und eine gemeinsame Position zum städtischen Leben auszuhandeln. Die Dokumentation dieses Prozesses gibt einen Einblick in die Vielfalt der Praktiken und Verfahren der Beteiligung und thematisiert gleichzeitig die Ambivalenzen, Unsicherheiten und unterschiedlichen Intensitäten der Beteiligung in einem notwendigerweise digitalen Umfeld.This publication presents the results of the master module “Participation processes in town and regional planning” in the summer term 2020. The module, which involved 18 urban planning master’s students, was offered by Tihomir Viderman and Silke Weidner at the Chair of Urban Management, BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg. As COVID-19 prevention measures restricted spaces of encounter and public life, the new situation presented a unique opportunity for planners and architects: We were able to experience how our daily lives - similar to any other participatory approach - are structured across and conditioned by a set of boundaries, rules, and personal experiences and abilities. Based on multi-sensory explorations of areas of everyday public life that have temporarily lost their use, purpose, and thus their original meaning, each student developed an informed position on the condition of the new ordinary. Taking their perceptions, insights and personal reflections on urbanity under COVID-19 prevention measures as a point of departure, the students further conceived and carried out a participatory process, to develop a shared position paper of the students of BTU on urban development under the pandemic and possible or wishedfor futures. The documentation of this process provides an insight into the diverse nature of practices and procedures of participation, while addressing ambivalences and uncertainties of participation in a digital environment

The New Leipzig Charter and the city after pandemic : long-term thinking in times of increasing uncertainties?

Die vorliegende Publikation stellt die Ergebnisse von neun Studierendenarbeiten aus dem Mastermodul „Prozess und Steuerung“ zusammen, welches im Wintersemester 2021 am Fachgebiet Stadtmanagement der BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg angeboten wurde. Unter der Deutschen EU-Ratspräsidentschaft wurde Ende November 2020 die Neue Leipzig-Charta als politisches und strategisches Dokument der Stadtentwicklung verabschiedet. Der Fokus liegt auf der transformativen Kraft handlungsfähiger Städte und fordert eine integrierte Stadtentwicklung, die dem Gemeinwohl verpflichtet ist. Zeitgleich stehen unter Covid-19 Präventionsmaßnahmen Akteur*innen und Instrumente der Stadtplanung einer wachsenden Diskrepanz zwischen normativen Konzepten einer Stadt und den nüchternen Alltagserfahrungen des urbanen Lebens gegenüber. In diesem Mastermodul untersuchten die Studierenden, welche Bedeutung und Auswirkungen die neuen Bedingungen und Alltagserfahrungen auf die Stadtplanung haben, außerdem inwieweit die Neue Leipzig-Charta diese Zustände adressiert. Ihre Arbeiten werfen ein verändertes Licht auf stadtplanerische Prinzipien und Konzepte, und diskutieren, was das langfristige strategische Denken in Zeiten von zunehmenden Unsicherheiten machen kann.This publication compiles the results of research that nine Master’s students carried out in the winter semester 2021 within the course „Urban Management“ at BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg. In 2020, under Germany’s Presidency of the EU Council, a policy framework strategic document for urban development in Europe, titled the New Leipzig Charter, was adopted. The document highlights the transformative power of cities, putting the focus on their capacity for action and commitment to the provision of services and infrastructures for the common good. At the same time, planning and design face a growing disconnect between such normative conceptualizations of a city and the sober everyday experiences of urban life under Covid-19 prevention measures. In this course the students explored the meanings and implications of these new everyday experiences and connected structural conditions for urban planning; and ask to what extent the New Leipzig Charter addresses these matters of concern. Their work sheds a new light on normative planning principles and concepts, while reflecting on the meaning and role of long-term strategic thinking in the times of increasing uncertainty

Urbane Handelslagen der Zukunft - Leipziger Innenstadt: Digitalisierung, Konzentrationsprozesse, Wettbewerbsdruck

Die vorliegende Publikation präsentiert Ergebnisse von 29 Studierenden des Masterstudiengangs Stadt- und Regionalplanung aus dem Projekt „Urbane Handelslagen der Zukunft“ im Sommersemester 2018 am Fachgebiet Stadtmanagement der BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg. Das Projekt befasste sich mit der Leipziger Innenstadt. Der Fokus lag dabei auf den folgenden Schwerpunkten: Digitalisierung, Konzentrationsprozesse, Wettbewerbsdruck. Eingebunden war das Projekt in einen bundesweiten Wettbewerb des Wissensnetzwerks Stadt und Handel e.V. (WSH). Daran nahmen insgesamt sechs Hochschulen mit unterschiedlichen Themen, je nach Fachrichtung, zum Beispiel Architektur, Stadtplanung oder Betriebswirtschaft, teil. Eine Vielzahl an Lösungsansätzen und eine Bandbreite von Ergebnissen wurden in Austausch gebracht. Dabei konnten die Studierenden Erfahrungen sammeln und die Untersuchungsgegenstände auf neue Art methodisch und didaktisch angehen

Kultur, Kapital, Urbane Transformation : Einblicke in die Stadtentwicklung in Timișoara, Novi Sad und Belgrad

In the summer term 2020 the Chair of Urban Management, BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg, conducted an excursion for Master students of planning and architecture to the region on both sides of the border between Romania and Serbia in a format of distance learning. Over three days the students and local experts of various professional backgrounds engaged online in discussion on urban development in Timișoara, Novi Sad and Belgrade. We explored how the dynamics of changing physical and social boundaries shape urban territories in a tension between centrality and periphery, while also engaging with the paradigm shift in planning centred on culture and people’s participation, as well as anticipations from flagship culture schemes to trigger positive urban changes. This publication provides summaries of some of the contributions, illuminating urban development as a complex process which involves a plurality of geopolitical shifts, engaged actors, interests, perspectives, hope-filled approaches and instruments.Im Sommersemester 2020 führte das Fachgebiet Stadtmanagement der BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg eine Exkursion für die Masterstudierenden der Stadtplanung und Architektur in die Region beidseits der Grenze zwischen Rumänien und Serbien im Format der Distanzlehre durch. An drei Tagen diskutierten die Studierenden und die Expert*innen der verschiedenen fachlichen Hintergründe online über die Stadtentwicklung in Timișoara, Novi Sad und Belgrad. Wir untersuchten, wie die Dynamik sich verändernder physischer und sozialer Grenzen die Stadtentwicklung in einer Spannung zwischen Zentralität und Peripherie prägt. Dabei befassten wir uns auch mit dem Paradigmenwechsel in der Stadtplanung, welcher den Fokus auf die Kultur und die Bürger*innenbeteiligung legt und Hoffnung im Flaggschiff-Kulturprogramme setzt, um positive urbane Entwicklungen auszulösen. Diese Publikation fasst einige der Beiträge zusammen und beleuchtet die Stadtentwicklung als einen komplexen Prozess, der eine Vielfalt von geopolitischen Veränderungen, engagierten Akteuren, Interessen, Perspektiven, hoffnungsvollen Ansätzen und Instrumenten umfasst
