    Interference estimation for admission control in multi-service DS-CDMA cellular systems

    Wideband code division multiples access (CDMA) is one of the major options for the next generation mobile cellular system. However, there is only limited research on the admission control for CDMA systems containing multiple service classes. In this paper the multi-service CDMA admission control problem is addressed by an approach which is conceptually simple, and yet produces satisfactory results. In our approach the limit on the acceptable interference level in a cell is translated into a constraint on the number of users of each service class in the local and neighboring cells. The randomness of user locations, shadowing and imperfect power control is captured as a whole by a log-normal distribution. Simulation results show that this approach is quite accurate over a wide range of required system outage probabilities.published_or_final_versio

    Towards offering more useful data reliably to mobile cloudfrom wireless sensor network

    The integration of ubiquitous wireless sensor network (WSN) and powerful mobile cloud computing (MCC) is a research topic that is attracting growing interest in both academia and industry. In this new paradigm, WSN provides data to the cloud, and mobile users request data from the cloud. To support applications involving WSN-MCC integration, which need to reliably offer data that are more useful to the mobile users from WSN to cloud, this paper first identifies the critical issues that affect the usefulness of sensory data and the reliability of WSN, then proposes a novel WSN-MCC integration scheme named TPSS, which consists of two main parts: 1) TPSDT (Time and Priority based Selective Data Transmission) for WSN gateway to selectively transmit sensory data that are more useful to the cloud, considering the time and priority features of the data requested by the mobile user; 2) PSS (Priority-based Sleep Scheduling) algorithm for WSN to save energy consumption so that it can gather and transmit data in a more reliable way. Analytical and experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of TPSS in improving usefulness of sensory data and reliability of WSN for WSN-MCC integration

    Thermal noise reduction in soliton microcombs via laser self-cooling

    Thermal noise usually dominates the low-frequency region of the optical phase noise of soliton microcombs, which leads to decoherence that limits many aspects of applications. In this work, we demonstrate a simple and reliable way to mitigate this noise by laser cooling with a pump laser. The key is rendering the pump laser to simultaneously excite two neighboring cavity modes from different families that are respectively red and blue detuned, one for soliton generation and the other for laser cooling

    We examine differences in authorship, word usage, and references in full papers from the 1991 and 2010 ICLS proceedings. Through a series of analyses, we observe that, while authors largely hail from the US, national and regional participation in the LS community has broadened. Word usage suggests a shift in emphasis from cognitive issues to ones that are both cognitive and cultural. Reference analysis indicates a shift in core literatures and influential authors

    In situ synthesis of zeolitic imidazolate frameworks/carbon nanotube composites with enhanced CO2 adsorption

    A series of ZIF-8 and hydroxyl-functionalized carbon nanotube (CNT) composites were successfully synthesized by the solvothermal method. The obtained ZIF-8/CNT composites were characterized by XRD, SEM, TGA and N2 adsorption at 77 K. The contents of ZIF-8 and CNTs in the composites were calculated from thermal analysis data. CO2 and N2 adsorption at 273 K on the composites was also investigated and compared. The ZIF-8 particles in the composites exhibit similar crystal structures and morphology to those of pure ZIF-8, but display enhanced thermal stability. The surface areas and pore volumes of the ZIF-8/CNT composites are higher than the values calculated for hypothetical physical mixtures, and the synergetic effect between ZIF-8 and CNTs can be proposed. This phenomenon demonstrates that the incorporation of CNTs into ZIF-8 can facilitate the nucleation and crystallization of ZIF-8. As a result, the composites with an optimal CNT content (3.63 wt%) show improved CO2 adsorption capacity and higher relative selectivity for CO2/N2 compared with pure ZIF-8
