    Highly Tunable Emission by Halide Engineering in Lead-Free Perovskite-Derivative Nanocrystals: The Cs2SnX6 (X = Cl, Br, Br/I, I) System

    Nanocrystals of Cs2SnX6 (X = Cl, Br, Br0.5I0.5, and I) have been prepared by a simple, optimized, hot-injection method, reporting for the first time the synthesis of Cs2SnCl6, Cs2SnBr6, and mixed Cs2Sn(I0.5Br0.5)6 nanocrystalline samples. They all show a cubic crystal structure with a linear scaling of lattice parameter by changing the halide size. The prepared nanocrystals have spherical shape with average size from 3 to 6 nm depending on the nature of the halide and span an emission range from 444 nm (Cs2SnCl6) to 790 nm (Cs2SnI6) with a further modulation provided by mixed Br/I systems

    In the last decades several research laboratories have shown an increasing interest aimed at extending the applicability of Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) dosimetry to radiotherapy with different types of radiation beams. EPR is a spectroscopic method for investigating the structure and dynamics of such paramagnetic species. Free radicals are known to be produced when a compound is irradiated with ionizing radiations. The concentration of radiation-induced free radicals is proportional to the energy released inside in the medium and this allows for dosimetric measurements through EPR technique. The use of alanine as a dosimetric material gave the possibility to apply EPR spectroscopy for high-dose standardization and dose control in radiation processing (Marrale 2016). The EPR dosimetric method has many advantages such as simple and rapid dose evaluation, the readout procedure is non-destructive, linear response of many organic and inorganic compounds. EPR detectors show a behavior that suggest possible applications for various kinds of beams used for radiation therapy. Nowadays, the most widely used organic compound as a dosimeter is the alanine. However, many researches are in progress with the aim at improving sensitivity of EPR dosimetry for doses much smaller than 1 Gy. More sensitive materials than alanine are needed to make the EPR dosimeter competitive with other dosimetry systems. Our research group has started an investigation of the EPR response of some phenols compounds for possible EPR dosimetric applications suitable features, such as high efficiency of radiation-matter energy transfer and radical stability at room temperature. Phenols are compounds possessing a benzene ring attached to a OH group. After irradiation the final product is a stable phenoxy radical. The stability of such radical can be improved by adding other alkyl chains which can be attached to the benzene ring. The phenol octadecyl-3-(3,5-di-tert.butyl-4-hydroxyphenyl)-propionate gave interesting results. Moreover, its high molecular weight, the low volatility and the compatibility with the dosimeter binding material (wax) are advantages with respect to lower molecular weight phenols. In this work we report the EPR investigation of phenols exposed to clinical photon and electron beams (Gallo, 2016). The dosimetric features of these EPR dosimeters (dependence on microwave power and modulation amplitude, their response after gamma and electron irradiations, dependence on beam type and energy, the detection limits for both beam typologies, signal stability after irradiation) were investigated and the results are reported

    Schistosomal appendicitis: Case series and systematic literature review

    Background Globally, schistosomiasis affects at least 240 million people each year with a high proportion of cases in sub-Saharan Africa. The infection presents a wide range of symptoms mainly at the gastrointestinal and urogenital level. Cases of schistosomiasis-related appendicitis are seldom reported. The aim of the present study is to identify the prevalence of schistosomiasis-related appendicitis in Beira, Mozambique and compare to global prevalence. Methods We retrospectively reviewed all cases of appendicitis recorded from January 2017 to March 2020 at a single pathology department located in Beira in order to assess the prevalence of schistosomiasis. Moreover, we performed a systematic review on the prevalence of schistosomiasis-related appendicitis in all countries. Findings A total of 145 appendicitis cases in Beira showed a 13.1% prevalence of schistosomal-related appendicitis. The mean age of patients was 29.1 years, and 14 (73.7%) were male. The systematic review identified 20 studies with 34,790 inpatientsAUwith: schistosomiasis-related appendicitis with a global prevalence of 1.31% (95% confidence interval (CI): 0.72 to PerPLOSstyle; sufferingfrom2.06); a high heterogeneity (I2 = 96.0%) was observed. Studies carried out in Africa reported a significantly higher prevalence of schistosomiasis-related appendicitis (2.75%; 95% CI: 1.28 to 4.68) than those in Middle East (0.49%; 95% CI: 0.18 to 0.95) (p for interaction < 0.0001). Conclusions Schistosomiasis infection should be considered as possible cause of appendicitis not only in endemic areas but also in developed countries. Considering that prevention is the best way to control the infection, more efforts should be put in place in order to increase the prevention coverage and avoid the cascading implications for health.     Oxidative Stress Markers to Investigate the Effects of Hyperoxia in Anesthesia

    Oxygen (O-2) is commonly used in clinical practice to prevent or treat hypoxia, but if used in excess (hyperoxia), it may act as toxic. O-2 toxicity arises from the enhanced formation of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) that exceed the antioxidant defenses and generate oxidative stress. In this study, we aimed at assessing whether an elevated fraction of inspired oxygen (FiO(2)) during and after general anesthesia may contribute to the unbalancing of the pro-oxidant/antioxidant equilibrium. We measured five oxidative stress biomarkers in blood samples from patients undergoing elective abdominal surgery, randomly assigned to FiO(2) = 0.40 vs. 0.80: hydroperoxides, antioxidants, nitrates and nitrites (NOx), malondialdehyde (MDA), and glutathionyl hemoglobin (HbSSG). The MDA concentration was significantly higher 24 h after surgery, and the body antioxidant defense lower, in the FiO(2) = 0.80 group with respect to both the FiO(2) = 0.40 group and the baseline values (p <= 0.05, Student's t-test). HbSSG in red blood cells was also higher in the FiO(2) = 0.80 group at the end of the surgery. NOx was higher in the FiO(2) = 0.80 group than the FiO(2) = 0.40 group at t = 2 h after surgery. MDA, the main end product of the peroxidation of polyunsaturated fatty acids directly influenced by FiO(2), may represent the best marker to assess the pro-oxidant/antioxidant equilibrium after surgery

    Análise espectral de dados SMMR para estudo de padrões de Inundação do Pantanal.

    Inundation seasonal patterns are important in the understanding of tropical floodplain ecosystems dynamics. In this study, we have analyzed data derived from 37-GHz polarization differences observed by the Nimbus-7 Scanning Multichannel Microwave Radiometer (SMMR). The passive microwave observations, for 10 Pantanal subregioes, provide an robust signature of inundation dynamics in large wetlands such as the Pantanal. The time series was obtained taking into account the differences between vertically and horizontally polarized brightness temperatures providing a sensitive indicator of the surface water against a vegetation land surface background. Each time series was analyzed by applying the gradient pattern analysis on a multiresolution representation obtained from wavelet decomposition /reconstrution technique. The main result have shown similar variability patterns for the following groups of subregions: (i) Miranda and Piquiri; (ii) Negro and Nhecolandia; (iii) Corixo, Paraguay, Cuiabá and Taquari fan; and (iv) Taquari river and Nabileque. Some hydrological aspects are discussed in order to understand the clusterization found from our results

    Temperature behavior of radiochromic poly(vinyl-alcohol)–glutaraldehyde Fricke gel dosimeters in practice

    The use of synthetic gel matrices prepared with poly(vinyl-alcohol) (PVA) cross-linked by glutaraldehyde (GTA) contributed to enhance the interest toward radiochromic Fricke gel (FG) dosimeters. As it occurs in several chemical dosimeters, the response of PVA-GTA Fricke gels could be affected by temperature. Aim of this work is to study the dependence of the dosimetric properties of PVA-GTA Fricke gel dosimeters both on the irradiation temperature and on temperature changes possibly occurring between the irradiation and readout phases. Such effects were investigated by means of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and optical absorbance (OA) measurements. The results did not reveal any significant dependence of the sensitivity of the dosimeters on the irradiation temperature in the investigated interval 20\ub0C-35\ub0C. By contrast, auto-oxidation phenomena confirmed to be a critical aspect for FG dosimeters, also in case of use of PVA matrix. The extent such phenomena, that might impair the accuracy of dose estimations, proved to critically depend on the temperature at which FG dosimeters are subjected before and after irradiation, as well as on the duration of possible thermal-stress

    “Less is more”: A dose-response account of intranasal oxytocin pharmacodynamics in the human brain

    Intranasal oxytocin is attracting attention as a potential treatment for several brain disorders due to promising preclinical results. However, translating findings to humans has been hampered by remaining uncertainties about its pharmacodynamics and the methods used to probe its effects in the human brain. Using a dose-response design (9, 18 and 36 IU), we demonstrate that intranasal oxytocin-induced changes in local regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) in the amygdala at rest, and in the covariance between rCBF in the amygdala and other key hubs of the brain oxytocin system, follow a dose-response curve with maximal effects for lower doses. Yet, the effects on local rCBF might vary by amygdala subdivision, highlighting the need to qualify dose-response curves within subregion. We further link physiological changes with the density of the oxytocin receptor gene mRNA across brain regions, strengthening our confidence in intranasal oxytocin as a valid approach to engage central targets. Finally, we demonstrate that intranasal oxytocin does not disrupt cerebrovascular reactivity, which corroborates the validity of haemodynamic neuroimaging to probe the effects of intranasal oxytocin in the human brain.     The Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on the Psychological Well-Being of Caregivers of People with Dementia or Mild Cognitive Impairment: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

    The aim of this systematic review was to investigate the effects of the COVID-19 lockdown on the psychological well-being of caregivers of people with dementia or mild cognitive impairment (PwD/MCI). Electronic databases were searched from inception to August 2022 for observational studies investigating the COVID-19 lockdown and psychological well-being of caregivers of PwD/MCI. Summary estimates of standardized mean differences (SMD) in psychological well-being scores pre- versus during COVID-19 were calculated using a random-effects model. Fifteen studies including 1702 caregivers (65.7% female, mean age 60.40 ± 12.9 years) with PwD/MCI were evaluated. Five studies found no change in psychological well-being parameters, including depression, anxiety, distress, caregiver burden, and quality of life. Ten studies found a worsening in at least one parameter: depression (six studies, n = 1368; SMD = 0.40; 95%CI: 0.09–0.71; p = 0.01, I2 = 86.8%), anxiety (seven studies, n = 1569; SMD = 1.35; 95%CI: 0.05–2.65; I2 = 99.2%), caregiver distress (six studies, n = 1320, SMD = 3.190; 95%CI: 1.42–4.95; p < 0.0001; I2 = 99.4%), and caregiver burden (four studies, n = 852, SMD = 0.34; 95%CI: 0.13–0.56; p = 0.001; I2 = 54.1%) (p < 0.05). There was an increase in depression, anxiety, caregiver burden, and distress in caregivers of PwD/MCI during the lockdown in the COVID pandemic. This could have longer term consequences, and it is essential that caregivers’ psychological well-being is assessed and supported, to benefit both themselves and those for whom they care

    Patient safety culture in Italian out-ofhours primary care service: a national cross-sectional survey study

    Background: Out-of-hours (OOH) services in Italy provide >10 million consultations every year. To the authors' knowledge, no data on patient safety culture (PSC) have been reported. Aim: To assess PSC in the Italian OOH setting. Design & setting: National cross-sectional survey using the Safety Attitudes Questionnaire — Ambulatory Version (SAQ-AV). Method: The SAQ-AV was translated into Italian and distributed in a convenience sample of OOH doctors in 2015. Answers were collected anonymously by Qualtrics. Stata (version 14) was used to estimate Cronbach's alpha, perform exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis, correlate items to doctors' characteristics, and to do item descriptive analysis. Results: Overall, 692 OOH doctors were contacted, with a 71% response rate. In the exploratory factor analysis (EFA), four factors were identified: Communication and Safety Climate (14 items); Perceptions of Management (eight items); Workload and Clinical Risk (six items); and Burnout Risk (four items). These four factors accounted for 68% of the total variance (Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin [KMO] statistic = 0.843). Cronbach's alpha ranged from 0.710-0.917. OOH doctors were often dissatisfied with their job; there is insufficient staff to provide optimal care and there is no training or supervision for new personnel and family medicine trainees. Service managers are perceived as distant, with particular issues concerning the communication between managers and OOH doctors. A large proportion of OOH doctors (56.8%) state that they do not receive adequate support. Conclusion: These findings could be useful for informing policies on how to improve PSC in Italian OOH service
