Efficient absolute aspect determination of a balloon borne far infrared telescope using a solid state optical photometer
The observational and operational efficiency of the TIFR 1 meter balloon
borne far infrared telescope has been improved by incorporating a multielement
solid state optical photometer (SSOP) at the Cassegrain focus of the telescope.
The SSOP is based on a 1-D linear photo diode array (PDA). The online and
offline processing schemes of the PDA signals which have been developed, lead
to improvement in the determination of absolute telescope aspect (
0\farcm8), which is very crucial for carrying out the observations as well as
offline analysis. The SSOP and its performance during a recent balloon flight
are presented here.Comment: To appear in the February 2000 issue of the PAS
Decays of bottom mesons emitting tensor meson in final state using ISGW II model
In this paper, we investigate phenomenologically two-body weak decays of the
bottom mesons emitting pseudoscalar/vector meson and a tensor meson. Form
factors are obtained using the improved ISGW II model. Consequently, branching
ratios for the CKM-favored and CKM-suppressed decays are calculated.Comment: 32 pages, to be published in Phys. Rev.
HST imaging of hyperluminous infrared galaxies
We present HST WFPC2 I band imaging for a sample of 9 Hyperluminous Infrared
Galaxies spanning a redshift range 0.45 < z < 1.34. Three of the sample have
morphologies showing evidence for interactions, six are QSOs. Host galaxies in
the QSOs are reliably detected out to z ~ 0.8. The detected QSO host galaxies
have an elliptical morphology with scalelengths spanning 6.5 < r_{e}(Kpc) < 88
and absolute k corrected magnitudes spanning -24.5 < M_{I} < -25.2. There is no
clear correlation between the IR power source and the optical morphology. None
of the sources in the sample, including F15307+3252, show any evidence for
gravitational lensing. We infer that the IR luminosities are thus real. Based
on these results, and previous studies of HLIRGs, we conclude that this class
of object is broadly consistent with being a simple extrapolation of the ULIRG
population to higher luminosities; ULIRGs being mainly violently interacting
systems powered by starbursts and/or AGN. Only a small number of sources whose
infrared luminosities exceed 10^{13}Lsun are intrinsically less luminous
objects which have been boosted by gravitational lensing.Comment: 16 Pages. Accepted for publication in MNRA
Star formation activity in the southern Galactic HII region G351.63-1.25
The southern Galactic high mass star-forming region, G351.6-1.3, is a HII
region-molecular cloud complex with a luminosity of 2.0 x 10^5 L_sun, located
at a distance of 2.4 kpc. In this paper, we focus on the investigation of the
associated HII region, embedded cluster and the interstellar medium in the
vicinity of G351.6-1.3. We address the identification of exciting source(s) as
well as the census of stellar populations. The ionised gas distribution has
been mapped using the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT), India at three
continuum frequencies: 1280, 610 and 325 MHz. The HII region shows an elongated
morphology and the 1280 MHz map comprises six resolved high density regions
encompassed by diffuse emission spanning 1.4 pc x 1.0 pc. The zero age
main-sequence (ZAMS) spectral type of the brightest radio core is O7.5. We have
carried out near-infrared observations in the JHKs bands using the SIRIUS
instrument on the 1.4 m Infrared Survey Facility (IRSF) telescope. The
near-infrared images reveal the presence of a cluster embedded in nebulous
fan-shaped emission. The log-normal slope of the K-band luminosity function of
the embedded cluster is found to be 0.27 +- 0.03 and the fraction of the
near-infrared excess stars is estimated to be 43%. These indicate that the age
of the cluster is consistent with 1 Myr. The champagne flow model from a flat,
thin molecular cloud is used to explain the morphology of radio emission with
respect to the millimetre cloud and infrared brightness.Comment: 18 pages, 8 figures, To be published in MNRA
Neutrino Mass Matrices with a Texture Zero and a Vanishing Minor
We study the implications of the simultaneous existence of a texture zero and
a vanishing minor in the neutrino mass matrix. There are thirty six possible
texture structures of this type, twenty one of which reduce to two texture zero
cases which have, already, been extensively studied. Of the remaining fifteen
textures only six are allowed by the current data. We examine the
phenomenological implications of the allowed texture structures for Majorana
type CP-violating phases, 1-3 mixing angle and Dirac type CP-violating phase.
All these possible textures can be generated through the seesaw mechanism and
realized in the framework of discrete abelian flavor symmetry. We present the
symmetry realization of these texture structures.Comment: To appear in Phys. Rev.
Participatory cotton breeding for organic and low input farming in Central India
Up to 80% of world’s organic cotton is produced in India. However, involved producers are facing increased difficulties to find suitable cultivars. Few hybrids selected for high input farming and genetically-modified (GM) cotton, which is explicitly excluded in organic farming, are presently dominating the Indian seed market. In addition farmers have lost their traditional knowledge on seed production and hybrid seed needs to be purchased each season
Cohesion, Elastic Constants and Vibrational Mechanics of Fcc Platinum
A model in real space has been developed by extending the generalized form of the exponential potential known as extended generalized exponential potential (EGEP) to account for (a) the correct nature of repulsive and attractive components of forces for all the separations in general and that of small separations in particular, (b) the three-body forces such as volume forces in an indirect way in the framework of EGEP through the parameter n, (c) the dielectric screening functions in an alternative and simpler form through the parameter m. The model is employed to compute the cohesive energy, second-order elastic constants and phenon spectra for fcc platinum. The predictions show promising agreement with experimental findings.Author Affiliation: Divesh Verma
