Associated production of a Z boson and a b-jet in ATLAS
The current uncertainty on the parametrization of the partonic content of the
proton (PDF's) affects the potential for the discovery of new physics at LHC.
The study of Z boson production in association with a b-jet can considerably
reduce such uncertainty. In addition, this process represents a background both
to the search for the Higgs boson and for SUSY particles. We present an update,
based on the full simulation data sample produced for the Rome Physics
Workshop, of a preliminary study in the case where the Z boson decays in mu+
mu-.Comment: 16 page
Philosophizing with Teenagers
Part of a special section on connecting with adolescents. Although few adolescents are ever formally exposed to philosophy at middle or high school, almost all are philosophers in the sense that they ask and seek answers to questions that are fundamentally philosophical. Furthermore, studying philosophy can be quite useful for adolescents as it requires that they practice developing clear and coherent reasons for believing or doing something, provides the tools with which they can follow the logic of any ideological stance, and provides models of alternative answers and a way of examining how the historical period in which one lives affects the way one thinks about existence

Study of e/gamma trigger for the electron calibration stream
This note describes a study of the possibilities for selecting an electron
calibration stream using the High level electron trigger (Level 2 and the event
filter). Using the electromagnetic calorimeter reconstruction and the track
reconstruction algorithms, an evaluation has been performed of the selection
efficiencies and purities for different physics channels with single or double
electrons in the final state. A study of the calibration stream composition,
including the background from QCD processes, is presented.Comment: 14 page
The GoodWork Project: An Overview
The Good Project is a large scale effort to identify individuals and institutions that exemplify good work -- work that is excellent in quality, socially responsible, and meaningful to its practitioners -- and to determine how best to increase the incidence of good work in our society. This paper is a comprehensive description of the GoodWork Project
A study of the measurement of the lepton anomalous magnetic moment in high energy lead-lead collisions at LHC
The lepton anomalous magnetic moment:
was measured, so far, with a precision of only several percents despite its
highly sensitivity to physics beyond the Standard Model such as compositeness
or Supersymmetry. A new study is presented to improve the sensitivity of the
measurement with photon-photon interactions from ultra-peripheral
lead-lead collisions at LHC. The theoretical approach used in this work is
based on an effective Lagrangian and on a photon flux implemented in the
MadGraph5 Monte Carlo simulation. Using a multivariate analysis to discriminate
the signal from the background processes, a sensitivity to the anomalous
magnetic moment = 0 is obtained at 95\%
CL with a dataset corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2 nb of
lead-lead collisions and assuming a conservative 10\% systematic uncertainty.
The present results are compared with previous calculations and available
measurements.Comment: 35 pages, 17 Figure
Is the Household Microwave Recommended to Obtain Antioxidant-Rich Extracts from Lycium barbarum Leaves?
Nowadays, much interest is devoted to the extraction of plant materials, considering also their waste and by-products, to obtain antioxidant-rich products. The effect of household microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) on the phenolic content and antioxidant activity of Lycium barbarum leaf extracts was investigated. An experimental design approach was adopted considering solid/liquid ratio (1, 3, and 5 g of leaves in 150 mL water), irradiation time (1, 3, and 5 min), and microwave power (300, 400, and 500 W) as independent variables. These three factors and their interactions were studied to evaluate the effect of MAE conditions on the responses of total phenolic content, antioxidant activity, and chlorogenic acid content. The results showed that the analytical parameters were positively influenced by the solid/liquid ratio and time. On the contrary, microwave power was inversely correlated with the investigated responses. This research revealed that microwave extraction conditions should be carefully monitored to obtain bioactive-rich aqueous extracts with high antioxidant activity. A comparison with household traditional methods showed an unexpected lower phenolic content and antioxidant activity for MAE extract in respect to the decoction and infusion. In fact, it was found that L. barbarum leaf infusion had the best functional properties, regarding the investigated characteristics. The outcome of this study has implications for raising awareness that household preparation conditions strongly affect the health properties of herbal extracts
