Certain minimal varieties are set-theoretic complete intersections

We present a class of homogeneous ideals which are generated by monomials and binomials of degree two and are set-theoretic complete intersections. This class includes certain reducible varieties of minimal degree and, in particular, the presentation ideals of the fiber cone algebras of monomial varieties of codimension two

A Reciprocal Cell–Cell Interaction Mediated by NT-3 and Neuregulins Controls the Early Survival and Development of Sympathetic Neuroblasts

Neurotrophin 3 (NT-3) can support the survival of some embryonic sympathetic neuroblasts before they become nerve growth factor dependent. We show that NT-3 is produced in vivo by nonneuronal cells neighboring embryonic sympathetic ganglia. NT-3 mRNA is produced by these nonneuronal cells in vitro and is up-regulated by platelet-derived growth factor, ciliary neurotrophic factor, and glial growth factor 2 (a neuregulin). Nonneuronal cell–conditioned medium promotes survival and induces TrkA expression in isolated sympathetic neuroblasts, and this activity is blocked by anti-NT-3 antibody. Neuroblasts also enhance NT-3 production by nonneuronal cells. Neuroblasts synthesize several forms of neuregulin, and antibodies to neuregulin attenuate the effect of the neuroblasts on the nonneuronal cells. These data suggest a reciprocal cell–cell interaction, in which neuroblast-derived neuregulins promote NT-3 production by neighboring nonneuronal cells, which in turn promotes neuroblast survival and further differentiation

Moyal star product approach to the Bohr-Sommerfeld approximation

The Bohr-Sommerfeld approximation to the eigenvalues of a one-dimensional quantum Hamiltonian is derived through order 2\hbar^2 (i.e., including the first correction term beyond the usual result) by means of the Moyal star product. The Hamiltonian need only have a Weyl transform (or symbol) that is a power series in \hbar, starting with 0\hbar^0, with a generic fixed point in phase space. The Hamiltonian is not restricted to the kinetic-plus-potential form. The method involves transforming the Hamiltonian to a normal form, in which it becomes a function of the harmonic oscillator Hamiltonian. Diagrammatic and other techniques with potential applications to other normal form problems are presented for manipulating higher order terms in the Moyal series.Comment: 27 pages, no figure

Inventário Florístico Florestal de Santa Catarina: espécies da Floresta Estacional Decidual.

    Get PDF

Expression of trk in MAH Cells Lacking the p75 Low-Affinty Nerve Growth Factor Receptor is Sufficient to Permit Nerve Growth Factor-Induced Differentiation to Postmitotic Neurons

We have transfected MAH cells, an immortalized sympathoadrenal progenitor cell line, with a plasmid encoding the 140-kDa Trk protein, a nerve growth factor (NGF) receptor with protein-tyrosine kinase activity. NGF promotes neurite outgrowth and proliferation from such cells, indicating that Trk is sufficient to mediate such responses in the absence of significant levels of the endogenous 75-kDa low-affinity NGF receptor (p75). These initial NGF responses are indistinguishable from those evoked by basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF). However, NGF is sufficient to promote terminal differentiation of a {approx}8% of trk-transfected MAH cells to postmitotic, NGF-dependent neurons, whereas all cells eventually die in medium with bFGF. Other environmental signals (such as depolarization or ciliary neurotrophic factor) can cooperate with NGF to enhance production of postmitotic NGF-dependent neurons in trk-transfected MAH cells. The terminal differentiation of sympathetic neurons thus involves sequential and cooperative actions of different growth and neurotrophic factors, as well as cell-intrinsic changes in the response to these factors

Implementing the Five-A Model of technical refinement: Key roles of the sport psychologist

    Get PDF
There is increasing evidence for the significant contribution provided by sport psychologists within applied coaching environments. However, this rarely considers their skills/knowledge being applied when refining athletes’ already learned and well-established motor skills. Therefore, this paper focuses on how a sport psychologist might assist a coach and athlete to implement long-term permanent and pressure proof refinements. It highlights key contributions at each stage of the Five-A Model—designed to deliver these important outcomes—providing both psychomotor and psychosocial input to the support delivery. By employing these recommendations, sport psychologists can make multiple positive contributions to completion of this challenging task
