    Atomic resolution mapping of phonon excitations in STEM-EELS experiments

    Atomically resolved electron energy-loss spectroscopy experiments are commonplace in modern aberrationcorrected transmission electron microscopes. Energy resolution has also been increasing steadily with the continuous improvement of electron monochromators. Electronic excitations however are known to be delocalised due to the long range interaction of the charged accelerated electrons with the electrons in a sample. This has made several scientists question the value of combined high spatial and energy resolution for mapping interband transitions and possibly phonon excitation in crystals. In this paper we demonstrate experimentally that atomic resolution information is indeed available at very low energy losses around 100 meV expressed as a modulation of the broadening of the zero loss peak. Careful data analysis allows us to get a glimpse of what are likely phonon excitations with both an energy loss and gain part. These experiments confirm recent theoretical predictions on the strong localisation of phonon excitations as opposed to electronic excitations and show that a combination of atomic resolution and recent developments in increased energy resolution will offer great benefit for mapping phonon modes in real space

    First Experience in the Mass Production of Components for the LHC Dipoles

    This paper reports on the manufacturing features and difficulties experienced for the preliminary mass production of the main mechanical components of the dipole cold mass. The production of about 600 km of superconducting coil copper wedges, 5'000 coil layer jump spacers and boxes, 12'500'000 austenitic steel collars and 5'800'000 low-carbon yoke laminations is spread over 4 European countries and involves 6 manufactory firms. The general technical requirements for the manufacturing process as well as the imposed production checks and quality controls are reviewed. An overview of the preliminary results is presented with an outlook towards the analysis and statistical which are in a process to be implemented for the follow-up of the mass production

    Selective attraction of marine bacterivorous nematodes to their bacterial food

    This paper explores the role of selective attraction to food in determining the spatial (micro)distribution of closely related nematode species. The attractiveness of 3 different bacterial strains to 4 species of Monhysteridae, Diplolaimelloides meyli, Diplolaimella dievengatensis, Monhystera sp. and Geomonhystera disjuncta, was studied in a multiple choice design. In our study area, the 4 nematode species considered are associated with Spartina anglica detritus decay and have partially overlapping microhabitat preferences. As they all belong to the same feeding guild, they are potential competitors for food. Each of the 4 nematode species was attracted to the bacterial strain B1, but important interspecific differences were noted in the nematodes' response to live or heat-killed bacteria, to bacteria at different tell densities or of different age, and to the filtered supernatant of B1 culture. While the responses of D. meyli to the Gram-positive bacteria Halobacillus trueperi and to the Gramnegative Escherichia coli were similar, D. dievengatensis and Monhystera sp, were preferentially attracted to H. trueperi and E. coli, respectively. This opposite preference influenced both the numbers and their relative abundances of D. dievengatensis and Monhystera sp, inside bacterial patches in experiments with a mixed 2-species nematode inoculum. Bacterial cell density strongly influenced the nematode response, with D. meyli invariably preferring the highest cell densities offered, while D. dievengatensis and Monhystera sp. had a peak response at lower cell densities. Though chemotaxis is suggested as an underlying mechanism, the nature of the nematodes' response remains unproved. The present results strongly support the importance of food patchiness in determining the heterogeneous distribution of nematodes, and extend the concept in such a way as to allow for small differences in microhabitat choice between closely related species. They also support the view that nematodes are specialist feeders, though they probably select spots where suitable food is plentiful rather than individual food particles. Finally, the present study offers a baseline for an understanding and further study of patterns of succession among nematode species associated with decaying Spartina anglica detritus in terms of highly specific relationships with different strains, growth stages, and densities of bacteria involved in the mineralization of Spartina anglica-derived organic matter

    Towards the production of 50'000 tonnes of low-carbon steel sheet for the LHC superconducting dipole and quadrupole magnets

    A total of 50'000 tonnes of low-carbon steel sheet has been ordered for the LHC main magnets. After three years of production, about 10'000 tonnes of steel sheet have been produced by Cockerill-Sambre Groupe Usinor. This paper gives a summary of the manufacturing process and improvements implemented as well as an overview of the difficulties encountered during this production. Preliminary statistics obtained for the mechanical and magnetic steel properties are presented

    Various Compressed Sensing Set-Ups Evaluated Against Shannon Sampling Under Constraint of Constant Illumination

    Under the constraint of constant illumination, an information criterion is formulated for the Fisher information that compressed sensing measurements in optical and transmission electron microscopy contain about the underlying parameters. Since this approach requires prior knowledge of the signal's support in the sparse basis, we develop a heuristic quantity, the detective quantum efficiency (DQE), that tracks this information criterion well without this knowledge. It is shown that for the investigated choice of sensing matrices, and in the absence of read-out noise, i.e. with only Poisson noise present, compressed sensing does not raise the amount of Fisher information in the recordings above that of Shannon sampling. Furthermore, enabled by the DQE's analytical tractability, the experimental designs are optimized by finding out the optimal fraction of on-pixels as a function of dose and read-out noise. Finally, we introduce a regularization and demonstrate, through simulations and experiment, that it yields reconstructions attaining minimum mean squared error at experimental settings predicted by the DQE as optimal.Comment: 18 pages, 13 figures.     Earthquake geology of the Kanda fault system (Tanganyika-Rukwa rift, SW highlands of Tanzania)

    The 160 km-long Kanda normal fault system is running longitudinally across the Ufipa tilted horst between the Tanganyika and Rukwa rift basins in the western branch of the East African Rift System. It is likely to have been affected the Ms 7.4 earthquake in 1910 whose instrumental epicentre was located approximately near Sumbawanga town, along the northern portion of the fault. Remote sensing, morphotectonic, and palaeoseismological investigations together with structural geology and electric resistivity profiling allow to characterise the main seismological parameters of this major active fault.In order to reconstruct the along-trend displacement profile and fault segmentation, topographic profiles were made across the fault scarp using data from differential GPS, Hand GPS and the 90 m resolution STRM DEM. Comparison of topographic profiles from the same site using the different topographic data provides some insight on the methodology and validity of topographic profiles extraction. Due to the large dimensions of the fault scarp (10-30 m high) the strong magnitude of the potential earthquakes (Ms. 7.5) and the large associated co-seismic slip (2-4 m), classical paleoseismic trenching is difficult to apply. Instead, we used existing exposures such as natural trenches, road cuts and outcrops, supplemented by a dense topographic survey (5000 points on differential GPS over less than 1 km2) to produce a 2 m resolution digital elevation model, performed detailed geological mapping, airphoto interpretation, electric resistivity profiling, small drillings, and C14 dating. Efforts were concentrated on a promising site where river sediments and peat deposits are interbedded with volcanic tephra layers and largely exposed on the footwall. Results show that the Kanda fault had different cycles of activity, separated by tectonically quite periods. The last period of activity probably started by 11 cal Ka BP, soon after the deposition of a marked tephra layer, but sedimentation on the footwall continued up to 5 Ka cal BP. Since then, the minimum offset is estimated at 17.9 m, which gives a minimum slip rate of 3.58 mm/year, of an equivalent of one earthquakes generating 3.58 m slip per 1000 years (Ms in the range of 7.0 - 7.5)
