J P Oberholzer: Professor and chair of the Department of Old Testament Studies (Sec A) 1971-1992The work done by J P Oberholzer in the different fields of Old Testament science is investigated and discussed in this article. The trend found in his scholarly work, namely to operate within the ever-widening contexts of theology, church, and God’s relationship with man in Jesus Christ, is shown. The underlying theological paradigmof Barth’s dialectical theology is indicated as well

The function of poetic speech in the narrative in Daniel 2

Two poetic sections are identified and investigated in Daniel 2. Attention is paid to the function of these poems within the narrative in Daniel 2 and its particular structure. The conclusion is drawn that poetic speech is used here as a focusing technique to point out the main themes of the narrative

Isaiah and the formation of the canon since the eighth century before ChristThe canonisation of Isaiah’s words was a complicated process in which different phenomena played a role. Due to politico-historical reasons Jerusalem receivedsymbolic meaning in the Isaiah tradition. Isaiah himself started a prophetic tradition in which Jerusalem was linked to a growing Zion tradition and a monotheising theology of the universal power of God. This tradition became canonical and served as paradigm for understanding the fate of Jerusalem as expression of the sovereign power of God to chastise as well as redeem

Isaiah 36–39: Rethinking the issues of priority and historical reliability

Isaiah 36–39 is a coherent literary unity that both holds priority over II Kings 18–20 and refl ects a historically reliable interpretation of the events surrounding Sennacherib’s invasion. On a literary level, Isaiah 36–39 shows itself to be a vital piece of the overall literary structure of Proto- Isaiah in that it highlights the fulfi lment of Isaiah’s initial Immanuel prophecy in chapters 7–12. The historical occasion for the writing of Isaiah 36–39 is early on during the reign of Manasseh, when opinion in Judah would have been divided over how to interpret the historical events surrounding Sennacherib’s invasion. Isaiah 36–39, therefore, sought to vindicate Hezekiah as a faithful and righteous king, Isaiah as a true prophet and YHWH as the one true God, in contrast to Manasseh’s policy changes that clearly refl ected his opinion that Hezekiah was a foolish king, Isaiah was a false prophet and YHWH was not powerful enough to protect Judah

The availability and use of competitive and business intelligence in South African business organisations

Business intelligence (BI) plays a critical role in providing actionableintelligence to enable good business decision-making. Internationalresearch shows clear evidence of the benefi ts of implementing soundBI practices. However, within a South African business context, anunderstanding of the practice, impact and benefi ts of BI is only partlyaddressed by existing research. Consequently, this article presentsthe most salient fi ndings of a recent BI study, which was one of thefew such studies that have been conducted in South Africa in the21st century. Although the discussion refl ects fairly high generalsatisfaction levels with BI among South African businesses, someproblems related especially to external BI dimensions are highlighted. An equally important and major concern raised by the article is theapparent lack of companies capitalising on BI opportunities andcoordinating BI functions eff ectively. Of concern at the generalmanagement level, in particular, are the low satisfaction levels withBI quality, as well as various aspects of BI collection, analysis anddissemination. Despite the fact that businesses use BI functions andplanning support software, the survey fi ndings reveal insuffi cientinvestment in sophisticated BI analysis tools

An Efficient Algorithm For Chinese Postman Walk on Bi-directed de Bruijn Graphs

Sequence assembly from short reads is an important problem in biology. It is known that solving the sequence assembly problem exactly on a bi-directed de Bruijn graph or a string graph is intractable. However finding a Shortest Double stranded DNA string (SDDNA) containing all the k-long words in the reads seems to be a good heuristic to get close to the original genome. This problem is equivalent to finding a cyclic Chinese Postman (CP) walk on the underlying un-weighted bi-directed de Bruijn graph built from the reads. The Chinese Postman walk Problem (CPP) is solved by reducing it to a general bi-directed flow on this graph which runs in O(|E|2 log2(|V |)) time. In this paper we show that the cyclic CPP on bi-directed graphs can be solved without reducing it to bi-directed flow. We present a ?(p(|V | + |E|) log(|V |) + (dmaxp)3) time algorithm to solve the cyclic CPP on a weighted bi-directed de Bruijn graph, where p = max{|{v|din(v) - dout(v) > 0}|, |{v|din(v) - dout(v) < 0}|} and dmax = max{|din(v) - dout(v)}. Our algorithm performs asymptotically better than the bidirected flow algorithm when the number of imbalanced nodes p is much less than the nodes in the bi-directed graph. From our experimental results on various datasets, we have noticed that the value of p/|V | lies between 0.08% and 0.13% with 95% probability
