Stationary reflection principles and two cardinal tree properties
We study consequences of stationary and semi-stationary set reflection. We
show that the semi stationary reflection principle implies the Singular
Cardinal Hypothesis, the failure of weak square principle, etc. We also
consider two cardinal tree properties introduced recently by Weiss and prove
that they follow from stationary and semi stationary set reflection augmented
with a weak form of Martin's Axiom. We also show that there are some
differences between the two reflection principles which suggest that stationary
set reflection is analogous to supercompactness whereas semi-stationary set
reflection is analogous to strong compactness.Comment: 19 page
Acute Stroke Multimodal Imaging: Present and Potential Applications toward Advancing Care.
In the past few decades, the field of acute ischemic stroke (AIS) has experienced significant advances in clinical practice. A core driver of this success has been the utilization of acute stroke imaging with an increasing focus on advanced methods including multimodal imaging. Such imaging techniques not only provide a richer understanding of AIS in vivo, but also, in doing so, provide better informed clinical assessments in management and treatment toward achieving best outcomes. As a result, advanced stroke imaging methods are now a mainstay of routine AIS practice that reflect best practice delivery of care. Furthermore, these imaging methods hold great potential to continue to advance the understanding of AIS and its care in the future. Copyright © 2017 by Thieme Medical Publishers, Inc
DeepInf: Social Influence Prediction with Deep Learning
Social and information networking activities such as on Facebook, Twitter,
WeChat, and Weibo have become an indispensable part of our everyday life, where
we can easily access friends' behaviors and are in turn influenced by them.
Consequently, an effective social influence prediction for each user is
critical for a variety of applications such as online recommendation and
advertising.
Conventional social influence prediction approaches typically design various
hand-crafted rules to extract user- and network-specific features. However,
their effectiveness heavily relies on the knowledge of domain experts. As a
result, it is usually difficult to generalize them into different domains.
Inspired by the recent success of deep neural networks in a wide range of
computing applications, we design an end-to-end framework, DeepInf, to learn
users' latent feature representation for predicting social influence. In
general, DeepInf takes a user's local network as the input to a graph neural
network for learning her latent social representation. We design strategies to
incorporate both network structures and user-specific features into
convolutional neural and attention networks. Extensive experiments on Open
Academic Graph, Twitter, Weibo, and Digg, representing different types of
social and information networks, demonstrate that the proposed end-to-end
model, DeepInf, significantly outperforms traditional feature engineering-based
approaches, suggesting the effectiveness of representation learning for social

Content of Trace Metals in Medicinal Plants and their Extracts
The heavy metals (Fe, Cu, Zn and Mn) contents of selected plant species, grown in Southeast region of Serbia, that are traditionally used in alternative medicine were determined. Among the considered metals, iron content was the highest one and varied from 137.53 up to 423.32 mg/kg, while the contents of Cu, Zn and Mn were remarkably lower, and ranged from 8.91 to 62.20 mg/kg. In addition, an analysis of plants extracts showed a significant transfer of heavy metals during extraction procedure; therefore, the corresponding extraction coefficients reached values up to 88.8%. Those were especially high in the ethanol based extracts. Moreover, it is was established that such coefficients mostly depend on the solvent nature and also on the treated plant species. The obtained results impose that medicinal plants from Southeast region of Serbia due to rather low content of heavy metals are appropriate for preparation of teas and medicinal extracts
Comparative screening of the anti-oxidant and antimicrobial activities of Sempervivum marmoreum L. extracts obtained by various extraction techniques
This paper presents a comparative study of the anti-oxidant and anti-microbial activities, total phenolic compounds and total flavonoids in extracts obtained from houseleek (Sempervivum marmoreum L.) leaves by the classical (maceration), ultrasonic and Soxhlet extraction (CE, UE and SE, respectively). The extract obtained by the CE contained higher amounts of phenolic and flavonoid compounds and showed a better antioxidant activity than those obtained using other two techniques. All the extracts, independent of the extraction technique applied, showed antimicrobial activities against Aspergillus niger and Candida albicans only but not against the tested bacteria

Is a reduction in brown adipose thermogenesis responsible for the change in core body temperature at menopause?
Maintenance of thermal homeostasis within a tight range is regulated not only by a variety of internal and external cues but also by sex and biological age. The major organ responsible for adaptive thermogenesis is brown adipose tissue (BAT) and the recent re-discovery of its presence in adult humans has led to huge interest in the role that it may play in modulating cardiometabolic health. Interestingly, as with maintenance of thermal homeostasis, the total amount and metabolic activity of BAT is modulated by sex and biological age. In this short commentary we discuss the recent finding that core-body temperature is reduced in women post-menopause, a period when excess adiposity and increased risk of cardiometabolic disease is evident and postulate that alterations in sex hormones downregulated the thermogenic activity of BAT cold contribute to this deleterious phenotype
