The final years of the existence of the Soviet Union-a period that encompassed also the dissolution of the Warsaw Treaty Organization were, notwithstanding, years of substantial development of antisubmarine warfare thought and capability in the Soviet navy. Some of this progress was readily visible to the West, particularly in the introduction of highly capable general-purpose nuclear submarines (SSNs)
