Axion Like Particles and the Inverse Seesaw Mechanism
Light pseudoscalars known as axion like particles (ALPs) may be behind
physical phenomena like the Universe transparency to ultra-energetic photons,
the soft -ray excess from the Coma cluster, and the 3.5 keV line. We
explore the connection of these particles with the inverse seesaw (ISS)
mechanism for neutrino mass generation. We propose a very restrictive setting
where the scalar field hosting the ALP is also responsible for generating the
ISS mass scales through its vacuum expectation value on gravity induced
nonrenormalizable operators. A discrete gauge symmetry protects the theory from
the appearance of overly strong gravitational effects and discrete anomaly
cancellation imposes strong constraints on the order of the group. The
anomalous U symmetry leading to the ALP is an extended lepton number and
the protective discrete symmetry can be always chosen as a subgroup of a

Polarimetry of an Intermediate-age Open Cluster: NGC 5617
We present polarimetric observations in the UBVRI bands of 72 stars located
in the direction of the medium age open cluster NGC 5617. Our intention is to
use polarimetry as a tool membership identification, by building on previous
investigations intended mainly to determine the cluster's general
characteristics rather than provide membership suitable for studies such as
stellar content and metallicity, as well as study the characteristics of the
dust lying between the Sun and the cluster. The obsevations were carried out
using the five-channel photopolarimeter of the Torino Astronomical Observatory
attached to the 2.15m telescope at the Complejo Astron\'omico El Leoncito
(CASLEO; Argentina. We are able to add 32 stars to the list of members of NGC
5617, and review the situation for others listed in the literature. In
particular, we find that five blue straggler stars in the region of the cluster
are located behind the same dust as the member stars are and we confirm the
membership of two red giants. The proposed polarimetric memberships are
compared with those derived by photometric and kinematical methods, with
excellent results. Among the observed stars, we identify 10 with intrinsic
polarization in their light. NGC 5617 can be polarimetrically characterized
with and . The spread in polarization
values for the stars observed in the direction of the cluster seems to be
caused by the uneven distribution of dust in front of the cluster's face.
Finally, we find that in the direction of the cluster, the interstellar medium
is apparently free of dust, from the Sun's position up to the
Carina-Sagittarius arm, where NGC 5617 seems to be located at its farthest
border
Vacuum Instabilities with a Wrong-Sign Higgs-Gluon-Gluon Amplitude
The recently discovered 125 GeV boson appears very similar to a Standard
Model Higgs, but with data favoring an enhanced h to gamma gamma rate. A number
of groups have found that fits would allow (or, less so after the latest
updates, prefer) that the h-t-tbar coupling have the opposite sign. This can be
given meaning in the context of an electroweak chiral Lagrangian, but it might
also be interpreted to mean that a new colored and charged particle runs in
loops and produces the opposite-sign hGG amplitude to that generated by
integrating out the top, as well as a contribution reinforcing the W-loop
contribution to hFF. In order to not suppress the rate of h to WW and h to ZZ,
which appear to be approximately Standard Model-like, one would need the loop
to "overshoot," not only canceling the top contribution but producing an
opposite-sign hGG vertex of about the same magnitude as that in the SM. We
argue that most such explanations have severe problems with fine-tuning and,
more importantly, vacuum stability. In particular, the case of stop loops
producing an opposite-sign hGG vertex of the same size as the Standard Model
one is ruled out by a combination of vacuum decay bounds and LEP constraints.
