    Two-Nucleon Scattering without partial waves using a momentum space Argonne V18 interaction

    We test the operator form of the Fourier transform of the Argonne V18 potential by computing selected scattering observables and all Wolfenstein parameters for a variety of energies. These are compared to the GW-DAC database and to partial wave calculations. We represent the interaction and transition operators as expansions in a spin-momentum basis. In this representation the Lippmann-Schwinger equation becomes a six channel integral equation in two variables. Our calculations use different numbers of spin-momentum basis elements to represent the on- and off-shell transition operators. This is because different numbers of independent spin-momentum basis elements are required to expand the on- and off-shell transition operators. The choice of on and off-shell spin-momentum basis elements is made so that the coefficients of the on-shell spin-momentum basis vectors are simply related to the corresponding off-shell coefficients.Comment: 14 pages, 8 Figures, typos correcte

    The effect of hydrogen dilution on the structure of a-C : H

    Two a-C:H samples were prepared using a fast-atom deposition system from acetylene and an acetylene/hydrogen gas mixture. Their structure was investigated using neutron and x-ny diffraction and infrared spectroscopy measurements. Compositional analysis shows that a 1:1 C2H2:H-2 mixture results in a change from a-C-77:H-23 to a-C-79:H-21, i.e. has a very small effect on the composition. The diffraction data also show that the addition of hydrogen to the precursor gas has no significant effect on the average bond distances and angles but shows a small change in the H-C-H and C-C-H correlations between the two samples. However, the infrared data show that there are significant changes in the bonding of hydrogen within the sample-changes which do not affect the average network structure. We observe a decrease in the amount of sp(3) CH2 and CH3 groups, and an increase in the fraction of sp(2) and sp(3) CH groups, with the formation of a second sp(2) CH bonding environment in the hydrogen-diluted sample. Therefore, in addition to providing useful structural information on these a-C:H samples, this set of experiments illustrates very well the complementary nature of the data from diffraction and spectroscopic techniques

    Nucleon-Nucleon Interaction: A Typical/Concise Review

    Nearly a recent century of work is divided to Nucleon-Nucleon (NN) interaction issue. We review some overall perspectives of NN interaction with a brief discussion about deuteron, general structure and symmetries of NN Lagrangian as well as equations of motion and solutions. Meanwhile, the main NN interaction models, as frameworks to build NN potentials, are reviewed concisely. We try to include and study almost all well-known potentials in a similar way, discuss more on various commonly used plain forms for two-nucleon interaction with an emphasis on the phenomenological and meson-exchange potentials as well as the constituent-quark potentials and new ones based on chiral effective field theory and working in coordinate-space mostly. The potentials are constructed in a way that fit NN scattering data, phase shifts, and are also compared in this way usually. An extra goal of this study is to start comparing various potentials forms in a unified manner.     A spectroscopic study of the structure of amorphous hydrogenated carbon

    A range of amorphous hydrogenated carbon (a-C:H) samples have been studied using inelastic neutron spectroscopy (INS) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Using these complementary techniques, the bonding environments of both carbon and hydrogen can be probed in some detail, with the INS data providing not only qualitative but also quantitative information. By comparing the data from each of the samples we have been able to examine the effects of different deposition conditions, i.e. precursor gas, deposition energy and deposition method, on the atomic-scale structure of a-C:H

    Absence of carious lesions at margins of glass-ionomer cement and amalgam restorations: An update of systematic review evidence

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>This article aims to update the existing systematic review evidence elicited by Mickenautsch et al. up to 18 January 2008 (published in the European Journal of Paediatric Dentistry in 2009) and addressing the review question of whether, in the same dentition and same cavity class, glass-ionomer cement (GIC) restored cavities show less recurrent carious lesions on cavity margins than cavities restored with amalgam.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>The systematic literature search was extended beyond the original search date and a further hand-search and reference check was done. The quality of accepted trials was assessed, using updated quality criteria, and the risk of bias was investigated in more depth than previously reported. In addition, the focus of quantitative synthesis was shifted to single datasets extracted from the accepted trials.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The database search (up to 10 August 2010) identified 1 new trial, in addition to the 9 included in the original systematic review, and 11 further trials were included after a hand-search and reference check. Of these 21 trials, 11 were excluded and 10 were accepted for data extraction and quality assessment. Thirteen dichotomous datasets of primary outcomes and 4 datasets with secondary outcomes were extracted. Meta-analysis and cumulative meta-analysis were used in combining clinically homogenous datasets. The overall results of the computed datasets suggest that GIC has a higher caries-preventive effect than amalgam for restorations in permanent teeth. No difference was found for restorations in the primary dentition.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>This outcome is in agreement with the conclusions of the original systematic review. Although the findings of the trials identified in this update may be considered to be less affected by attrition- and publication bias, their risk of selection- and detection/performance bias is high. Thus, verification of the currently available results requires further high-quality randomised control trials.</p

    One-Step Preservation of Phosphoproteins and Tissue Morphology at Room Temperature for Diagnostic and Research Specimens

    BACKGROUND: There is an urgent need to measure phosphorylated cell signaling proteins in cancer tissue for the individualization of molecular targeted kinase inhibitor therapy. However, phosphoproteins fluctuate rapidly following tissue procurement. Snap-freezing preserves phosphoproteins, but is unavailable in most clinics and compromises diagnostic morphology. Formalin fixation preserves tissue histomorphology, but penetrates tissue slowly, and is unsuitable for stabilizing phosphoproteins. We originated and evaluated a novel one-step biomarker and histology preservative (BHP) chemistry that stabilizes signaling protein phosphorylation and retains formalin-like tissue histomorphology with equivalent immunohistochemistry in a single paraffin block. RESULTS: Total protein yield extracted from BHP-fixed, routine paraffin-embedded mouse liver was 100% compared to snap-frozen tissue. The abundance of 14 phosphorylated proteins was found to be stable over extended fixation times in BHP fixed paraffin embedded human colon mucosa. Compared to matched snap-frozen tissue, 8 phosphoproteins were equally preserved in mouse liver, while AMPKβ1 Ser108 was slightly elevated after BHP fixation. More than 25 tissues from mouse, cat and human specimens were evaluated for preservation of histomorphology. Selected tissues were evaluated in a multi-site, independent pathology review. Tissue fixed with BHP showed equivalent preservation of cytoplasmic and membrane cytomorphology, with significantly better nuclear chromatin preservation by BHP compared to formalin. Immunohistochemical staining of 13 non-phosphorylated proteins, including estrogen receptor alpha, progesterone receptor, Ki-67 and Her2, was equal to or stronger in BHP compared to formalin. BHP demonstrated significantly improved immunohistochemical detection of phosphorylated proteins ERK Thr202/Tyr204, GSK3-α/β Ser21/Ser9, p38-MAPK Thr180/Tyr182, eIF4G Ser1108 and Acetyl-CoA Carboxylase Ser79. CONCLUSION: In a single paraffin block BHP preserved the phosphorylation state of several signaling proteins at a level comparable to snap-freezing, while maintaining the full diagnostic immunohistochemical and histomorphologic detail of formalin fixation. This new tissue fixative has the potential to greatly facilitate personalized medicine, biobanking, and phospho-proteomic research

    Neutron-diffraction studies of amorphous CNx materials

    The results of neutron-diffraction experiments performed on two samples of amorphous CNx, with nitrogen concentrations of 5 and 30 at. %, prepared by a combination of filtered cathodic are and Kaufman-type ion source, are presented. Increasing the N content of the samples is seen to cause a decrease of the average bond length and the first coordination number. An increase in the average bond angle from 113 degrees to 121 degrees is also observed. The pair-distribution functions indicate that N incorporation results in some transformation of sp(3) C sites to sp(2) sites, but there is no evidence for N inducing the formation of crystalline graphitic clusters, and the overall structure remains amorphous. A direct subtraction of the two data sets emphasizes the loss of sp(3) bonds and the increasing sp(2) character of the higher-N-content sample, and shows the occurrence of a variety of bonding environments for N. More limited information on second neighbor correlations involving N is also revealed
