Ecology Outside of Theology

"In the 1990s, Belarus became a champion of teaching ecological awareness courses in the university framework: compulsory courses were introduced in the curriculum, and, in 1992, a unique ecological research and educational institution named after Soviet human rights activist and dissident Andrey Sakharov was established. Involvement of the Belarusian Orthodox Church and its units in raising eco-awareness is also significant, e.g. vast foreign church-related humanitarian aid and ecumenical cooperation connected to ecological topics, a unique department on ecology of the Hrodna diocese139 and visible presence of events with strong ecological content in the framework of activities of the Youth Union of the Belarusian Orthodox Church and Synodal Department for Youth Affairs of the Belarusian Orthodox Church. Zwiespältige Sonderstellung: Orthodoxe Kirche und Staat in Belarus

Am 25. Dezember 2013 trat Metropolit Filaret von seinem Amt als Oberhaupt des Belarussischen Exarchats der Russisch-Orthodoxen Kirche zurück, das er 35 Jahre lang ausübte. Die orthodoxe Kirche in Belarus erlebt somit derzeit einen Epochenwechsel. Zum Nachfolger Filarets, der intensive internationale ökumenische Kontakte pflegte, wurde der wenig bekannte Metropolit Pawel ernannt, der bis dahin der Eparchie von Rjasan und Michailow vorstand. Die Wahl fiel somit nicht, wie von vielen in Belarus einschließlich Präsident Lukaschenka erwartet, auf einen belarussischen Staatsbürger. Der folgende Beitrag analysiert die aktuelle Situation der orthodoxen Kirche im multi-konfessionellen Belarus, ihre Positionierung im Verhältnis zu Staat und Gesellschaft sowie die möglichen Veränderungen, die vom neuen Metropoliten zu erwarten sind
