Common Dermatoses in Patients with Obsessive Compulsive Disorders
Obsessive-compulsive disorder is a chronic, debilitating syndrome, consisting of intrusive thoughts- which are experienced as inappropriate by the patient and are producing anxiety- and compulsions, defined as repetitive behaviours produced to reduce anxiety. While patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder typically have xerosis, eczema or lichen simplex chronicus, as a result of frequent washing or rubbing their skin, several other disorders which are included in the group of factitious disorders have also been associated with obsessive-compulsive disorder. A close collaboration between the dermatologist and the psychiatrist is therefore mandatory in order to achieve favourable outcomes for these patients. The aim of the article is to present the most frequent dermatological disorders associated with obsessive-compulsive disorder and to look over some of the rare ones
From recipe to collective improvisation. An ethnographic vignette about food assistance in Barriera di Milano, Turin
This paper explores the ways in which an urban food assistance project develops in everyday practice. Building on ethnographic fieldwork with the project Fa Bene in Barriera di Milano, one of the historical working-class neighbourhoods in Turin, the two authors bring together their individual experiences as researchers and volunteers. They analyse how context-specific interactions, local actors and their ways of doing things, give specific meanings and taste to the original project’s recipe and its social objectives, namely support to families in need through donations as well as community-based entertainment and capacity building. By describing the processes of food donation and collection at the marketplace and, secondly, the decision-making moments around the preparation of food boxes for the project’s beneficiaries at the Casa del Quartiere (neighbourhood community centre), the article sheds light onto the different aspects that make such boxes distinctive. Among others, management of fresh food, with its own powerful sensorial attributes, familiarity and uncertainty at the market and diverse food preferences are special ingredients in this sense. The paper is also an invitation to reflect on current developments within the social sector characterised by the continuous downsizing of the welfare state and a key role of associations. In the context of Turin, food assistance is a key component of the work of the third sector, rendering its access subject to volunteer work, improvisation, and sadly putting it at risk in times of emergency
Pathological Skin Picking: Case Presentation and Review of the Literature
Pathological skin picking is a condition in which patients induce skin lesions through repetitive, compulsive excoriations of normal skin or skin with minor surface irregularities and they admit their role in the production of the lesions, but are unable to stop their behavior. Psychiatric comorbidities most often associated with skin picking include obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), anxiety disorders, mood disorders, body dysmorphic disorders, trichotillomania and compulsive-buying disorder. We report the case of a 17 year old female patient who addressed the dermatology department of our hospital with an eruption consisting of erythematous papules and plaques. The local examination revealed several clues of paramount importance in drawing the final conclusion and the psychiatric examination helped establish the diagnosis of pathological skin picking in a patient with obsessive-compulsive disorder
Genital Male Piercings
Body piercing has been practiced for thousands of years all over the world for beautification, religion, initiation rites or status reasons. Genital piercings also have a significant background and have been practiced for enhancing sexual pleasure, chastity, shocking or as a protest against a conservative society. As the popularity of genital piercings increased in the last years, the number of complications is also on the rise. It is therefore important for the medical professionals to have at least basic knowledge regarding this practice, as it might be required in the management of unpredictable complications
COMPLEX ORTHODONTIC-SURGICAL APPROACH IN THE TREATMENT OF DENTOMAXILLARY ANOMALIES IN OUTPATIENT CONDITIONS. CLINICAL CASE
Rezultate: Tratament complex ortodontic-chirurgical. Introduction: The success of the treatment of dento-maxillary anomalies is based on a detailed and objective study of the clinical situation to establish the diagnosis and the treatment aims. The complexity of some clinical cases requires an interdisciplinary approach, with facilitative surgeries in orthodontic recovery. Objective of the study: Complex orthodontic-surgical evaluation in the treatment of dento-maxillary anomaly in adults. Material and methods: A 37-years-old female came to the clinic with aesthetic and functional complains. Patient evaluation included subjective, exo- and endooral examination, paraclinical examinations: photometric analysis, biometrics of the model, radiological examinations: TRG, OPG, CBCT. The diagnosis was set: malocclusion class II Angle, associated with compression of the upper jaw, deviation of the aesthetic center, anodontia of tooth 15, inclusion of tooth 33, supernumerary lower incisor, mesioversion of tooth 37. Results: Complex orthodontic-surgical treatment. All third molars, tooth 73 and the supernumerary tooth were extracted preorthodontically. Orthodontic treatment was initiated with fixed braces, associated with surgical exposure of tooth 33 and vestibular osteotomy at the level of teeth 33-37 to facilitate and accelerate orthodontic recovery. The verticalisation of tooth 37 was performed with cortical anchorage, TAD inserted in the retromolar space. Conclusions: The complex orthodontic-surgical approach in the treatment of dento-maxillary anomalies in adults justifies the success and the expected result
Northern Rock: The Crisis of a UK Mortgage Lender
The global market liquidity squeeze for securities that initiated in 2007 has increased pressure among banks to sell, pushed down prices, and impacted the market for interbank loans, leading to a funding gap at Northern Rock, Britain’s fifth largest mortgage bank. This paper presents an analysis of the events that lead to the collapse of Northern Rock in the second half of 2007 and its rescue by the UK Government towards the end of the same year and the beginning of 2008. The paper presents the implications and banking reforms proposed by the UK financial authorities.financial crisis, banking reforms, financial regulation
The structural characterization of the Borrelia afzelii species by means FT-IR spectroscopy
A FT-IR study of the Borrelia afzelii species is reported for the first time. The FT-IR spectrum was obtained in the wavelength interval between 450-4000 cm-1, and the assignation of the absorption bands and the structural interpretation was performed. These spectral domains contain information about DNA, RNA, polysaccharides, proteins, phospholipids
CRATAEGUS GENUS: PRESERVED PLANTS
Crataegus Genus is a complex group of small trees with more than 1000 species being native to northern temperate zones. The Herbarium hosts 200 plates that contain 30 Crataegus Genus species. Most plates belong to C. monogyna, C. pentagyna and C. oxyacantha. The majority of Crataegus species were gathered between the years 1934 and 1943. A large number of plates are signed by Al. Beldie, S. Pașcovski, Al. Borza, C.C.Georgescu and were gathered from Texas, Pensylvania (USA), and from Romania (Bucharest, Argeș). The herbarium offers a unique perspective for the Crataegus genus species in regard to their location-temporal dynami
