High-temperature electron hole liquid in diamond wires

    Get PDF
The density functional theory is used to study the properties of the electron hole liquid (EHL) in diamond quantum wires. Take a quantum wire with a circular cross section with radius R. Electrons and holes move freely along the z-axis. To calculate the energy and equilibrium density of the EHL, the Schrödinger equations for electrons and holes are solved numerically. Calculations have shown that the EHL is stable in diamond wires with a radius of several exciton radii. As the radius of the quantum wire decreases, the equilibrium density increases and the EHL energy decreases. So, with the radius of the quantum wire equal to the exciton radius (1.38 nm), the equilibrium linear density and energy of the EHL can reach values of 2.2 ∙ 107 cm–1 and – 317 meV, respectively. Estimates show that for these values of density and energy, the critical temperature of the EHL is Tc ≈ 370 K

Background. Anterior cruciate ligament rupture is the most common knee joint injury, especially in young people with a healthy and active lifestyle. The concept of quality of life has been dynamically developing. The scope of its application is expanding in various fields of medicine to provide a comprehensive assessment of treatment and rehabilitation efficacy. Objective — to assess the feasibility of complex individual physical rehabilitation of patients after early and delayed arthroscopic reconstruction of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL).Methods. Open simple non-randomized trial enrolled 834 patients with the anterior cruciate ligament rupture of the knee joint. In the first group (431 patients), ACL plastic surgery was performed in the early stages — between weeks 2 and 6. In the second group (403 patients), ACL reconstruction was performed in the later stages — from week 7 to 1 year, inclusive. Each group was divided into two subgroups — the main one, in which restorative treatment and comprehensive individual rehabilitation were carried out, and the control group, with rehabilitation treatment in accordance with the standards of postoperative treatment. The study was conducted in Traumatology, Orthopedics and Medical Rehabilitation Unit of Clinical Hospital No. 1. Patients were included in the trial from 2016 to 2021. The follow-up period for each patient was one year. Statistical data processing was performed by means of Statistica 12.0 (StatSoft, Inc., USA). Independent samples were compared using non-parametric criteria: Mann — Whitney U-test and Wilcoxon T-test.Results. No statistical differences were found in the distribution according to gender, age and body mass index. A comparative analysis of scale medians of Medical Outcomes Study 36Item Short-Form Health Survey (MOSSF-36), conducted in patients before surgery, revealed no statistically significant differences ( p>0.05) between the main and control subgroups in both groups. Analyzing medians before ACL reconstruction showed a significant decrease in comparison with population studies ( p < 0.0001, Mann — Whitney U-test). The analysis of physical and mental component summaries via MOSSF-36 revealed statistically significant differences in the effectiveness of treatment of patients in 1 year after ACL plastic surgery and complex individual rehabilitation. Thus, in the main subgroups, the values of treatment efficacy medians were significantly higher than in the control ones, regardless of the timing of ACL plastic surgery ( p < 0.001, Mann — Whitney U-test). The results testify to higher median efficacy values in patients of the main subgroup of group 1 than in other subgroups ( p < 0.001, Mann — Whitney U-test). The study of correlative relationships demonstrated a stronger relationship between the medians of physical and mental component summaries in the main subgroup of the first group (correlation coefficient = 0.76), if compared to the main subgroup of the second group (coefficient = 0.67).Conclusion. The study testified to the treatment efficacy proved using the scales of physical and mental component summaries. They demonstrated more significant treatment efficacy one year after arthroscopic ACL reconstruction and individual rehabilitation in the main subgroup of group 1 than in the other subgroups

Scintillating properties of frozen new liquid scintillators

The light emission from scintillators which are liquid at room temperature was studied in the interval between +20+20~^{\circ}C and 120-120~^{\circ}C, where the phase transition from liquid to solid takes place. The light yield measured at 120-120~^{\circ}C is about twice as much as that observed at +20+20~^{\circ}C. By cooling the scintillator from +20+20~^{\circ}C to 120-120~^{\circ}C and then heating it from 120-120~^{\circ}C to +20+20~^{\circ}C, the light yield varies in steps at well defined temperatures, which are different for the cooling and heating processes. These hysteresis phenomena appear to be related to the solvent rather than to the dopant. The decay time of scintillation light was measured at +20+20~^{\circ}C and 120-120~^{\circ}C. Whilst at room temperature most of the light is emitted with a decay time of 6--8 ns, at 120-120~^{\circ}C a slower component, with a decay time of 25--35 ns, becomes important

The vibrational-rotational absorption spectrum of water vapor within the range 15500–16000 cm−1 is measured and analyzed. The spectrum is recoded with an IFS-125M Fourier transform spectrometer with a resolution of 0.03 cm−1, at pressure of 25 mbar, at a temperature of 24°C, and at an optical path length of 34.8 m. The measurements are performed using a multipass White cell with a base length of 60 cm. A light-emitting diode is used as a radiation source. The signal-to-noise ratio is about 104, which makes it possible to measure the parameters of lines with intensities on the order of 10−27 cm/molecule. The centers, intensities, and half-widths of lines are determined by fitting the Voigt profile parameters to measured data set by the least squares method. A list of more than 430 lines is formed based on the analysis of the spectrum. The obtained results are compared with calculated and experimental data of other authors

The sol–gel technique is a very flexible, relatively simple, and low-cost method to fabricate many different innovative photonic structures characterized by specific functionalities. During synthesis, starting from the molecular level, compounds or composites with well controlled composition can be obtained as thin films, powders or monoliths. These materials can be used to prepare such structures as waveguides, photonic crystals, coatings, and bulk glasses including spheres, rings and other geometries exploited in optical resonators fabrication. This article presents some results obtained by the authors in the field of the sol–gel-derived photonic structures. To emphasise the scientific and technological interest in this kind of systems and the versatility of the sol–gel route, the glass-based nano and micrometer scale range systems are discussed. Particularly, the following systems are described: silica–hafnia glass and glass–ceramic planar waveguides, nanosized tetraphosphates, and silica colloidal crystals. The attention is focused on the spectroscopic properties of Er3+-activated materials that due to the light emission can be used in the integrated optics area covering application in sensing, biomedical diagnostic, energy conversion, telecommunication, lighting, and photon management

Modern issues of sugar beet (<i>Beta vulgaris</i> L.) hybrid breeding

High efficiency of the cultivation of unfertilized sugar beet ovules and preparation of haploid regenerants (microclones) of pollinators – maintainers of О-type sterility and MS forms of the RMS 120 hybrid components has been shown. A technological method that accelerates the creation of new uniform starting material is proposed. It speeds up the breeding process two to threefold. The identification of haploid regenerants with sterile cytoplasm in initial populations is of great theoretical and practical importance for breeding, as it facilitates the production of homozygous lines with cytoplasmic male sterility and high-performance hybrids on sterile basis. As shown by molecular analysis, a single-nucleotide polymorphism never reported hitherto is present in the mitochondrial genome of the haploid plant regenerants. It allows identification of microclones as fertile and sterile forms. It has been found that DNA markers of the sugar beet mitochondrial genome belonging to the TR minisatellite family (TR1 and TR3) enable reliable enough identification of haploid microclonal plants as MSor O-type forms. Fragments of 1000 bp in length have been detected in monogenic forms in the analysis of 11 sugar beet plants cultured in vitro by PCR with the OP-S4 random RAPD primer. Testing of the OP-S4 marker’s being in the same linkage group as the genes responsible for expression of the economically valuable trait monogermity demonstrates its relative reliability. By the proposed method, dihaploid lines (DH) of the male-sterile form and the О-type sterility maintainer of the RMS 120 sugar beet hybrid have been obtained in in vitro culture. These lines are highly uniform in biomorphological traits, as proven under field conditions
