Palabras clave: geomorfolog铆a, Monte, ecosistemas 谩ridos, valle de Santa Mar铆a.The Santa Maria Valley has a great diversity of landscapes, typical of arid ecosystems, which is manifested through a mosaic of units with different land uses (natural and anthropic). The erosive processes along with the shortage of water resources and the intervention of man were modeling the landscape over the years. The objective of this work was to delimit and characterize the landscape units (UP) of the Cafayate region (Salta) and to elaborate the corresponding thematic cartography: geomorphological, vegetation and landscape units. The UP (basic units of study) are defined as a combination of elements that generate, at a certain scale, a particular physiognomy, a differentiated and differentiable morphological organization, which makes one part of the territory different from another. The UP were delimited and characterized in the cabinet based on the available bibliography and cartography of the area, the visual interpretation of current satellite images (Landsat 8 of the year 2015, Google Earth Pro, scale 1: 50,000) and its subsequent field control. The digitalization and processing of said image was done through the Geographical Information System QGIS 2.18.0 in vector format. For the delimitation of large UP, geomorphological units were taken as a central element, which were subsequently subdivided according to the type of vegetation and land uses. The field work consisted in the prospecting of the UP defined in the cabinet, for its corroboration and characterization. Data on li- thology, slope, vegetation and species composition were taken. Five geomorphological units were delimited; 10 units of vegetation / land uses, which were grouped into two categories: natural units and anthropic units. Finally, based on the previous delimitations, 13 landscape units were obtained. The delimitation and characterization studies of landscape units in the Santa Mar铆a valley are scarce, from this work we can conclude that the geomorphological unit of piedmont is the one that presents a greater number of UP, being the most widely developed unit the one of Piedemonte with crops, in Sierra de Quilmes, and Piedemonte with arbustal in Cumbres Calchaquies.Fil: Varela Ituarte, Mayra Alexia.
