Praktijktesten : van onderzoeksmethode naar beleidsinstrument tegen discriminatie?

De voorbije jaren kwamen praktijktesten uitgebreid in de media. Academici brachten grootschalige discriminatie op de woning- en arbeidsmarkt aan het licht door middel van praktijktesten. Verschillende middenveldorganisaties en politici pleiten dan weer om praktijktesten te gebruiken om discriminerende bedrijven of verhuurders aan te pakken. Dit overzichtsartikel wil een brug slaan tussen beide werelden en nagaan in welke mate praktijktesten gebruikt kunnen worden als wetenschappelijke methode én als beleidsinstrument in de strijd tegen discriminatie. We maken eerst op basis van drie criteria een typologie op van de technieken om discriminerend gedrag te testen: situatietesten, correspondentietesten, mystery calls/visits en mystery mails. We staan hierbij telkens stil bij hun ontstaansgeschiedenis, toepassing en voor- en nadelen. Deze typologie is zeker niet algemeen aanvaard, maar ze kan toekomstig onderzoek conceptueel sturen. Vervolgens bespreken we hoever het onderzoek naar praktijktesten als beleidsinstrument staat. Er is beperkte wetenschappelijk evidentie dat praktijktesten in bepaalde omstandigheden en onder bepaalde voorwaarden effectief, haalbaar en ethisch verantwoord zijn. Wij zijn daarom voorzichtige voorstanders van het gebruik van praktijktesten als beleidsinstrument tegen discriminatie

Fracture of the tibial baseplate in bicompartmental knee arthroplasty

Introduction. Bicompartmental knee arthroplasty (BKA) addresses combined medial and patellofemoral compartment osteoarthritis, which is relatively common, and has been proposed as a bridge between unicompartmental and total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Case Presentation. We present the case report of a young active man treated with BKA after unsuccessful conservative therapy. Four years later, loosening with fracture of the tibial baseplate was identified and the patient was revised to TKA. Discussion. Although our case is only the second fractured tibial baseplate to be reported, we believe that the modular titanium design, with two fixation pegs, is too thin to withstand daily cyclic loading powers. Light daily routine use, rather than high-impact sports, is therefore advised. Failures may also be related to the implant being an early generation and known to be technically complex, with too few implant sizes. We currently use TKA for the treatment of medial and patellofemoral compartment osteoarthritis

The relation between religion and depression in Europe : the moderating role of the religious context

Previous research has found that religiosity is positively related to mental well-being. This study assesses whether the religious context moderates the relationship between individual levels of religiosity and depression in the religiously diverse European context. We apply multilevel models, examining 68,874 individuals in 29 European countries subdivided into 277 regions from the sixth (2012) and seventh (2014) wave of the European Social Survey. First, we found that religious service attendance is associated with fewer depressive feelings, but the opposite is true for frequency of prayer. Second, the results indicate that the association between religiosity and depression is moderated by the religious context. In less religious regions, depressive symptoms relate less to service attendance than in highly religious regions, while frequency of praying relates to more depressive symptoms in regions with lower levels of religiosity. </jats:p
